Hi Maddy, Nitrogen from nitrogen fixing plants enters the soil when the nitrogen fixing plant dies or exfoliates it's leaves. Nitrogen fixing plants do not release much nitrogen when they are alive but when parts of it (leaves, roots, pods etc) decompose they release large amounts of nitrogen which are made available for other plants. You can plant nitrogen fixing plants such as the fava beans, chick peas, peas and cut them before they flower as they contain large amounts of nitrogen before they produce the fruit. After you cut the plant, you can either till it into the soil or put it on your compost pile/leave it on the soil.
