Well something DID happen. It didn't take long that day. Third time IS the charm. Almost did it twice, too! That second one was shaped like a crappie, it was so round. Congrats!!
Ya, crazy cold fronts. I never know how that will effect the fishing in the fall. Sometimes it turns out like this. That last fish had the craziest proportions. Certainly one that has a chance to grow past state record size. Thank you!

It would have been nice to catch it in the light as the pictures using my iphone light don't really do it justice but I'll take it how I can get it. I usually try not to use a light when I'm fishing in the early morning. I have a superstition that the light spooks the fish (as well as other animals that might be fun to look at). However, after several of my biggest catches this fall came in the pitch dark I did start carrying a head lamp for filming purposes. Thanks for watching as usual!

Congrats on your new PB! An amazing 3 day run of Wiper fishing. You're little slice of Heaven doesn't look too bad! I bet there is an even bigger one there waiting for you in the future.
Thanks, it sure seems like someone is going to pull out a 20lb from there sometime. The fact that there were three 15+ fish in there and probably plenty more that I didn't catch suggests to me that there are bigger fish lurking. Fishing heaven indeed!

My local lake/reservoir/spillway, doesn't have wipers. I had no idea they got to those sizes. IDNR did start stocking pure striped bass around 2018. Big fish are turning up now. I'll be trying for them come spring with a rod setup similar to what you're using. Thanks!

@ if your ever on the east coast in spring or fall 40lb stripers are not uncommon. They typically run to warmer water when a cold front hits, i like going after them during the fall run when its that first nice cold more rain the better. I wonder if the wiper has that going on here.

The wiper bite tends to get really good once the weather starts to suddenly change in the fall similar to what you describe for pure stripers. This was one of the first really cold mornings of the fall and that probably triggered this fire bite.
Dude that is crazy, it's crazy to see that length affects weight way more than their belly mass. If that 17.6 let would've had a shape like that 15lber but it's own length I think it would've been a state record, congrats!!
I think it would be much easier to get a state record in the Spring. Some of these fish could put on several lbs of egg weight. Maybe you can get a 20 lb pre-spawner.
I was on Palo this summer catching big walleye and bass one morning and left to get some work done. I should have stayed out. It was one of those days I could have gotten into something really good.
22.2 lbs is crazy. I think our state record is 19.6 lbs. I know several people have gotten very close to breaking that this past year. Your dam sounds like it can grow the giants!

My local dam holds our state record. 22.2. My biggest is 15. The run will start in April. Should come on up. It also holds state record walleye also!

Same, especially in the fall when the temps are dropping. My best trip was in November, caught one double digit and a lot of 7-9lbers
