During the 1930s, fashion was heavily influenced by ancient Greece. In the previous decades, there was an appreciation through patterns such as the meander and the Greek key. But during the 1930s, the couturiers returned to the long evening gowns that transformed their clients into Greek statues. It was under these cultural influences that Madame Grès flourished as an haute couture designer. She refused to speak about her technique and concealed her personal life from the public eye. That earned her the nickname “The Sphinx of Fashion”.❤
I love her dresses. They are works of art, classy, and oh so timeless. There will never be a designer like her, and it's sad that her art failed to receive the attention it deserved.
These surpass many designs walking today-what an incredible body of work. Madame Grès deserves to have her legacy lifted in admiration and respect. Rest In Peace to this dynamite woman.
I could not blink in case a miss a picture. You cannot find a single design to dislike if you tried really hard! I met two seamstresses in Paris who had worked with Madame Grès for over 15 years. Their fingers were magical and their attention to detail unparalleled. I observed them at work.
Utterly gorgeous, sensuous yet never vulgar. Never heard of her before and I’m completely enthralled. Thanks for introducing me to this outstanding designer.
My Goodness What A body of Work and Amazed at how many pieces survived the decades as fresh as if they had been Designed and constructed today. I'm so sorry her label was exploited and disappeared. And that at the end of her life NO ONE came to her rescue !!Sad ,goes to show how"Haute Couture's clients are heartless and unfeeling Narcissist women. The Beauty of her work and they could have cared less. Thank You Madame Gres` ,What Beauty/ technique you left us!💜😔
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! We thank you, Great Lady of Style, for the legacy left and we apologize that we are only now rediscovering and bringing to light your creation!
Beautifully presented and narrated. But I wouldn't say she's unknown or forgotten in any way. Not a household name as the company hasn't been revived, but anyone who studies 20th century fashion knows her. I remember the Met exhibit very well and I still have the exhibition catalog. The fiasco surrounding the daughter was big news in New York.
both svante garde and classic. exceptional work. What a pity... this retrospective in the Met ... I remember and then the shock of finding out she had been dead for a year! Wow... I was 18 I think... time flies!
Thank you so much for doing this. These clothes were just beautiful, and I don't understand why people end up like that with nobody to take care of d*** about them when they're so wonderful and famous, it happens all the time people is just thrown away. Just look at the movie star so it was just thrown away like veronica.Lake.I I'm the wonderful heading lamar, just thrown away
Great video!..please do a feature on the multifaceted Spanish fashion and textile designer, artist, inventor, Mario Fortuny!..Madame Grés penchant for greek inspired designs that showcased her bravura in draping and textile manipulation is reminiscent of the great Fortuny, who designed and engineered his own fabrics to create iconic styles that have inspired many designers that came after him..He too was inspired with the classical Greek forms that embodied his craft and artistic genius!..❤
Yes, of course!!! I've been shipping a lot of visibility about this great designer for a long time! Here it is: th-cam.com/video/-_iy9xR-29U/w-d-xo.html Thank you for your attention to my channel!❤️
Fantastic to hear her story & at least she had some recognition during her life, but indeed not enough! But I wish the images were matched up with the narration (e.g. showing what was being described while it was being described).
@@FashionQuestion thank you for the story of this incredible artisan! And the dresses are amazing!! I'm glad it appears that many are preserved & hope are in fashion museums!
Madame Gres doom herself in the fashion world by not going into ready to wear. Whatever her reason we will never understand. The problem with Haute couture is that the garment is one of kind. Once the garment is destroy her legacy in fashion disappear like a ghost. She could not sew or make pattern but there is a contradiction from her old seamstresses said that she was very good cutter. Maybe they were refer to her draping fabric directly on the dress-form and have it sewing on the form. She can draws and that how was able to communicate with her worker. There were daywear which existed on sketch she make. None her daywear survived. What is left is her spectacular pleated evening wear. She influenced Azzedine Alaia who was commercially success. Madame Gres secret to her evening gowns were the 1 cm pleats sew together row upon row which act like superstructure holding up the grown with out interface. The pleats were both decorated and functional. Her legacy live on in school created by her old seamstress. it called Paris American Academy. The Sphinx lives on. there is video in youtube of Madam Gres school. Good luck and good hunting. Cheers.

Forever beautiful. Never trendy. Like ancient Egyptian art or Stonehenge.
Absolutely 👌
Beautiful images. Sad that it was narrated by AI. Ruined the whole.
Very sad…Thank you ❤️
Why she died
The cause of her death was not widely publicized, but she died of natural causes related to her age.
script not edited , many errors .better only photos
Ok)))thanks for watching 🕊️
... Confusing Comment .???? 😊
@@maxlinder5262 no😁
TERRIBLE AI narration. Pass.
Ok😉
Respect for Mme Grés. Nevertheless lots of images are repeated, there are no dates in several, And you queer repeating yourself
Anyway,thanks for watching!🌷
Ai is so played out.
I’m not AI😲Thanks for watching ❤️
Get rid of the AI narrator. It makes the video unwatchable. Less than 2 minutes in, I'm out of here.
Sorry to here that 😒
Sorry it looks like crap
It's okay that everyone likes different things 🤔
Who would wear this?Fantasy dresses, useless.
Thanks for watching!!If I had enough money for that kind of pay-I'd wear it!😁
