    That's why guys have such an easy time growing out our hair. we cornrow our hair and leave it alone. We aren't constantly messing with our hair with excessive levels of heat or strssful styles like tight box braids which leaves for easy length retention

    For any ladies that may have trouble growing hair past shoulders, please check in with your hormonal (endocrine) system; this includes thyroid, pancreas, reproductive, lymphatic, etc.. If the endocrine system is malnourished or stressed, your hair, skin, and nail growth cycles will be sporadic and slow, your hair will split even with protective low manipulation, and it will shed easily which means no length retention. This equals dry, dull skin, hair and nails. If there are two things I'd recommend cutting out for hormonal health, its dairy and refined sugar. Dairy is full of natural hormones to grow baby calves since their endocrine system isn't fully developed. Sugar stresses out your pancreas and liver which means mal-absorption from your other foods equaling not enough nutrients to your hair skin and nails. The body always uses nutrients for internal purposes to sustain life; hair, skin, and nails are secondary. so EAT WELL!
    Drink lots of water!!! Your hair is like a plant, it needs water to grow and not break. Imagine not watering your houseplant, it dries out and gets brittle and dies and you can crunch the plants! Its the same with hair. Eat lots of veg that have minerals for hair. Raw Greens, avocados (the beauty fruit), and lots of water! Look into herbal supplements as well. No slick edges, tight buns and ponytails, only combing when damp, sealing in moisture, low manipulation, and protective styles, and eating tons of veggies (I'm vegan!) helped me grow my hair midback in 3.5 years with LOTS of cutting in between.
    Hope this helps someone. 6 years natural, certified nutritional herbalist. I just gifted ya'll. lol. Stay well. Stay healthy! Stay happy!

    I love how transparent you are, too many TH-camrs are pretentious. I am here for the natural face and you being authentic💕 Anyways, this is what I have learnt with my natural hair journey.
    1. Let your scalp breathe when possible so I don't wear my wigs or my silk headscarf unless I need to.
    2. Keep my hair moisturised at all times and I drink plenty water.
    3. Deep condition hair weekly or every two weeks.
    4. The combs in wigs are dangerous lol!!! use elastic bands and take the combs out. your edges will thank you.
    5. Be patient and like Megz said leave it alone. Retaining length is much more important than length.
    6. I prefer Bantu knots or large two plaits (even under my wigs) because I feel I am able to moisturise my scalp/hair better than having it in cornrows.
    I hope my tips helped and I know growing natural hair is such a journey! but I know it will be worth it in the end. 💝

    I hear you on the old TH-cam days, basically from 2005 to 2010. When people just came on from their bedroom or bathroom without being all glam. There was no backdrop, extra crispy sharp sharp sharp video, no let me put on at least 5 layers of makeup. It was real simple. I miss it. BTW, thanks Meg for sharing your perspective on being natural and your length, as well as maintenance.

    If I can say something, be careful with the comb attachements on your temple. Because, with time you will loose your edges.
    If you can, put a band on the back of your wigs and cut the combs off! ( advice from my own experience).
    Love you Megz❤️

    Best natural hair advice...leave it alone and keep it moisturized. I've been natural 12 years, my hair is 22 inches long and that's exactly what I do. And i have not put heat in it, in about 7 years. AND DRINK WATER.

  • @shanequajohnson4473

    I don't do much for my hair, and I put shampoo and conditioner to wash my hair, and I don't dry my hair out cause my hair dry on its own, and I'll do hairstyles when my hair is wet, and its make me easy for me and, then I'll put a cap over my head for overnight, and then I'll take the cap off when I wake up in morning or afternoon, and my hair will be soft and juicy and ready to go in the morning or afternoon.

    people don't realize that leaving your hair alone is actually the chemical x to hair growth. i keep mines in felicia braids about 80 % of the time, because 1. I'm tender headed af and no one really can touch my head without me loosing my mind. 2. i have no creativity 3. lazier than a mofo.

    A lot of people thought my hair took off because I was pregnant. Nah bruh. I kept it matter under my work cap for 4 months and under a scarf for another 4 months. The most length retention I've ever had because there wasn't time for breakage every week. But I'm back to working a different job now so no more scarves and hats.

  • @Mz.M.2757
    @Mz.M.2757 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Megz you are so right! Low manipulation styles and of course protective styles are what coily needs for length retention. I dont wear protective styles but i do low manipulative styles and that is what works. I have long beautiful relaxed hair and playing in my type 4 hair more than once a week has caused some set backs in retention.

    I think another "secret" is your height, lol! Definitely not making fun of you or anything but I have been subscribed for years and I know you're 4'11", b/c you say it from time to time in your videos. I think everything you said in this video is true, but a certain hair length on a short person will look longer than on someone who is average or taller height aka it'll look like your hair "grows fast." I see very little on YT about hair length and height, It's not really that important to cover but on camera Im sure it would helps clear a lot of things up for new subbies! Great video and length retention! Love you Megz!

  • @trinaboo85

    Not to mention the elastic on those cheap bonnets will absorb the moisture from your edges and the friction can cause your edges to break.

    • @Misscovergirl90
      @Misscovergirl90 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      trinaboo85 Yes! I wish someone would've told me these earlier. My edges are badly, broken off from elastic bonnets.

      Misscovergirl90 I had to learn the hard way too. Now if I need to wear one I'll put on a scarf first then the bonnet just to protect my ends.

    • @Jayariee
      @Jayariee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Misscovergirl90 you can try wrapping your edges with a satin scarf before putting on the bonnet or Flipping the bonnet (some tend to have the softer part of elastic on the inside)

      Lady Godivea Very sad excuse for why you can't go natural if you ask me. It is so much hotter in the states during the summer and fall months, than it is in the Caribbean due to the fact that they actually have 4 seasons. If can get so hot in states like California, Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, to the point where wildfires occur. Your excuse is weak.

    I have that same exact scarf. I will say different colors feel different. The white with black feels so much softer. Literally feels like silk. The black one is soft like satin. So while they are both soft. The white is softer. Also, that you mentioned water, fitness and eating healthy. Not sure why some people don't realize these are crucial for internal and external heakth.

I have twists now and had box braids for abt 6 weeks but I always make sure to tell my braider to not do them too tight at all and I wear the braids down when I go to bed at night. I retain length the most when I get twists and braids but after I take these twists out in two weeks, I'm gonna do clip ins. Those are another great protective style bc you can still care for your hair more often

      I'm in the same boat. I've been wearing puffs and updos.I got a trim last months and The growth was magical lol. I ran errands today with my hair in plats and a hat. I don't want to waste a good braid out until I go out later this week lmao.

      @Jayariee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Valencia Patrick Ensure you don't do a puff or fros too much. Other than brushing, gel and the material pulling on your edges, the exposure of your ends encourages knots and friction(even with the environment). Braids and twists tend to be better and reinforces the strength of the hair with the wrapping motion (imagine rope, it's stronger when the pieces are entwined rather than loose)

    Hi Ladies my name is Beth and I'm an addict! 😳 Yes I am addicted to my hair. I have HIHS (Hand In Hair Syndrome). Even as I am typing with one hand, I am playing in my hair with the other. 😔🤦🏾‍♀️ Please, does anyone know the number to HIH anonymous?!? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

      I need an intervention ASAP!
      If there is half an inch of hair on my head - I will find a way to play in it. I don't know how to stop. Box Braids don't deter me either - I will take it out and have a play and then put the braid in again. There must be help for HIHS out there!

    Good advice. I realized that leaving hair alone was the best option when wearing finger waves back in the 90s. My hair grew like crazy. I also have never worn braids or weaves which have left my edges intact. I am proud of that decision. I am beginning my natural journey as we speak and have recently purchased two wigs. Thanks for the advice.

    Megz ... great video gurl!. You said you don't have a secret to your hair growth. Glad you said that. People need to understand that everyone has a different growth rate. We all have different anagen phases (or growth rate which is commonly 3-5 yrs). Some of us have long anagen phases, ( up to 5 yes) some shorter so obviously those with short phases are going to go into the next phase (catagen) sooner so their hair will be shorter than someone who has a longer anagen phase. I also leave my hair alone too. Wash, condition, massages, twist or braid, wig.... that's it. Thanks babe.

    I came here because of the title lol! As boring as it is not to be
    messin around with our hair every 5 minutes, *yes* the best thing we can do
    for our hair is to just *leave it alone.* Keep it clean, and conditioned. Deep conditioning
    once a month, hot oil treatments every 3 months, find a couple of good protective styles
    to stick too, and that's it! Boring, but effective. When you acquire the length you've been waiting
    for then you can have all the fun. thanks for making it all clear baby girl :)

    i dont do anything to my hair either but moisturize my ends every other night and leave it in a loose bun during the daytime with that cheap pack kinky kenakelon hair you get at the beauty supply store. i just wrap it around my bun and it hides my ends from the elements. ive been doing this for 7 months and have retained so much length. also i deep condition obviously but i dont do much, its not rocket science to me, idk. your hair looks great.
