  • This video contains a detailed and simplified explanation about pleural effusions. We discuss the pathophysiology, causes, presentation, investigations, complications and management of pleural effusions.
    CORRECTION The cutoff for exudative effusions is more than 3g per dL (decilitre) rather than 3g/l as stated in the video.

    Thank you for this video, it reminded me of my experience in 2011.
    I had pleural effusion and had 0.5L drained from my right lung. I was in hospital for 2 months and underwent many tests including a lung biopsy but they couldn't find root cause so said it was most likely tuberculosis (despite no symtoms) because I visited Vietnam. Told them that when I was in Vietnam, I felt intense sharp pain around my right kidney after drinking beer and thought it was somehow related. They dismissed it and proceeded to prescribe 6 months of TB medication.
    During that time I didn't drink any acohol but after that, I had a shot of vodka to celebrate a friend's birthday and had the exact intense sharp pain. A colleague from work said that wheat is common in beer and vodka so I decided to try drinking wine and other non-wheat beverages and haven't had any recurrence of the pain.
    I've now removed gluten from my diet as I was getting rashes and IBS whenever I ate bread/pizza/pasta/etc. Feeling much healthier now and no longer breaking out in a rash whenever I do anything strenuous - couldn't even cut the grass at one stage.
    I hope someone out there might benefit from this.

    I had an empyema about 10 years ago due to a pneumonia on my left side. I went from feeling a little tired and having a slight pain on my left side to struggling to breathe in about 10 minutes. I dialed 911 immediately. I was misdiagnosed with a heart attack and I was hospitalized for a total of 19 days. The draining of my left lung didn't work and I eventually had a Decortication procedure. It was rough. I was told that I might need oxygen from that point on but I was fortunate enough to live without it after the first month following surgery. To this day I experience a shortness of breath especially while laying down.

As the matter of fact, God Bless ALL Doctors and medical care assistance for along centuries they'd attributed in savings Millions of life's World wide !! Regardless of all this, all of us should remember forever that all our existence of being, achievements, experience and adventures along our lifetime is thanks to God who used our Mom and Blessed her to brought us forth on this Earth by Birth. If it wasn't for the fact whereby our parents didn't congregate passion and love to obtained us, none of us wouldn't of been here Today in existence !! all my good friends, aquintances, families and love ones working in the World of Medical Care, I wanna say that the prestige, pride, honour, loyalty of a friendship doesn't value more than the life of a human !! Now cutting to the chase; My beloved "Mom" passed away recently on Sunday August 16th, 2020 at 10:35am right in front of me at home without I could of done anything to at least try helped her out !! Just to make the story shortest as possible, she (my Mom) was at the age of 81 and were having medical health issue since beginning of July 2020. As the matter of fact, she got this (which I found out untill few days afterwards) complications called "Plural Effusion" (nothing to do with the Covid cause her test results were negative). She was passing out lots of "Mocus/Plegm" Slime by throat and Mouth and had lots of "Vocht" (it's in Dutch word here in my phrase but I believe in English language they call it Drull Liquid) in the Lungs. Lots of weird things happened for what goes the medical care and assistance onto my Mom. "House Doctor" came to visit and check out her status on Friday August 07th, 2020 and seeing that she was passing out all these thick Mocus/Plegm Slime, Doctor prescribed same as he did beginning of July, more "Noscapine" and "Flummucil". Also, on July 24th, 2020, Doctor send lab assistant to take Blood test from my Mom. Now, on same Friday August 07th, 2020, (2 weeks after) Doctor came back at home to do rutinary checked up on my Mom's medical status; sugar, pressure, heart palpitations, cardiac response, etc, etc and checked also too chest and upper back part and said tho that there were a peculiar sound within the lungs and respiratory coordination and said that it could be signs of a Lung infection and said then that during the coming week, he would be sending Mom to take out a "Echo Scopic" picture of the Lungs. Doctor remarked also onto me (son) that everything seemed to be good regarding Mom's Blood Test !! Sugar was good levelled (5.1), Blood Pressure little high but no threath cause instead giving her halve pill, would then continue now giving her one pill complete. Just to deviate a bit, my Mom was Diabetic, had little high Blood Pressure now and then, according to Doctor, at last ages got Delirium, Dementia and knee Contractions Complicatons. Returning back from deviation, Doctor continued remarking; "surprisingly for a Elderly of 81, her "Pancreas", "Liver" and "Kidneys" are functioning Optimally Good !! Just have to verify properly tho that Lung issue during the week regarding taking the picture of it. I said onto him then Great !! Next, during the time after that Friday August 07th, 2020 straight along up to Wendsday August 12th (so 5 days after Doctor's previous house visit), my Mom was passing out more and more Mocus/Plegm Slime whereby her health situation got worsened cause she couldn't of breath barely nor couldn't even swallow water, just imagine. First to call was my Mom's House Doctor who came at the house rapidly but surprisingly and even before connecting any kind of medical artefacto to verify my Mom's health status condition, said loud out; "OH, SHE'S DYING" !! Then I turned and told him; "Hey, wait a minute, how do you mean by that if 5 days before you said that everything shows good along my Mom's Blood test?" Then Doctor said; "yeah, but remember she may of have a lung infection". While at Hospital, they never had her on infuse water, nor proper equipment and we had been told that her health conditions were deteriorating, defences were running low, vital organs were shutting down respectively. To be continued cause I have to charge phone now.

      @@yaraalraddadi9143 Hi, now continuing the story of the events, I forgot to mention that on August 12th when my Mom's health condition had worsened and I had called the House Doctor and he came and said (by just only seeing her visually) that she's dying and that she had probably a lung infection etc, etc, he had rushed her then to the main Hospital were allegedly there was a Dutch Lung Specialist on duty watch who had handled my Mom (properly by the way) at the Hospital and he said that my Mom's health condition had worsened, defences dropped low, vital organs were shutting down and that she had probably 2 or 4 days left of life and that her age plays an essential role in her health deteriorating process, etc, etc. Now I just wanted to deviate for a minute here and launch the question; "But isn't it so that in a case scenario whereby someone is under going a terminal stage, Doctors wouldn't nor couldn't of seen indications in Blood test from weeks ahead?? Now I could be wrong and may God forgive me but at school education for what goes biology lesson of the human being body, we had been taught that once a person is in terminal stage phase, vital organs such as Kidneys, Liver Pancreas, Bladder (same ones occasionally the House Doctor himself had said on August 07th according to Blood test results that were functioning optimally good) starts shutting down respectively? I mean to say that is it really common that in terminal stage one of the vital organs that would or could be shutting down is or could be the kidneys whereby the pashent can't or would have complications of urinating? In my Mom's case scenario, she was urinating properly and even up to the Dutch Lung Specialist who had said that there was nothing else that could of been done to save or help my Mom, had prescribed Augmentin Antibiotic and a urinatory ketterer regardless cause accordingly the function of this medication is for my Mom to be able to urinate the Vocht, Mocus/Plegm Slime out !! Also in my Mom's eye white, had no yellow stain so I believe that the Liver was still functioning? Also, she had no skin colour changes so probably the pancreas was still functioning good? So what is or was strange about certain points here is where the House Doctor remarked at first on August 07th that everything was good in my Mom's blood test and then on August 12th (5 days after due of visual judgement) said verbally that she was dying? And then wrote on the very next day August 13th, (one day after the alleged Dutch Lung Specialist at Hospital indicated such) a finally official sporadically letter stating that him as my Mom's House Doctor, declares that my Mom is in Terminal Stage phase and that he gives her a time span of life no longer than 3 months. Now I am asking myself so be the case, how come the House Doctor didn't or couldn't say such since weeks before or at least couldn't say this since August 07th already?? Why wait until when the Dutch Lung Specialist indicated such and then finally the very following day, reinforces such statement? Now I am not discarting nor doubting in House Doctor profeshion cause he'd attended to my Mom decently and properly along 20 years and God Bless him and all Doctors but why proceed like this for? Why say Blood test shows everything is good why in reality aparantly it wasn't? To be continued, eyes getting tired of typing?

    What s difference between pleural effusion and pulmonary edema ??

    • @ZeroToFinals
      @ZeroToFinals  5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hi Nermeen. Pleural effusion is where there is fluid in the pleural space (between the lung and the chest wall) whereas pulmonary oedema is where there is fluid inside the lung tissue (between the cells and in the alveoli). Hope that helps

This also irritates my lungs. I hope it goes away on its own within a few days to weeks. I wish you the best of luck tho bro, your going through it
