Wendy was a blues/soul/jazz singer who was well-known in her hometown Melbourne but only known to the rest of Australia from sporadic television appearances and short tours. She died about ten years ago.

Another Aussie singer Nick. Wendy was around from the early 70s. I mainly remember her in Copperwine or with the Wendy Saddington Band.

I remember having a beer and a talk with Tom Waits in a South Melbourne pub and he was amazed at the size of the blues community in Melbourne and he freaked out when I told him we had a couple of Zydeco bands as well!

The "GTK" which appeared at the start of the clip was the name of the television series (it stood for Get To Know or Getting To Know) produced by our national broadcaster, the ABC, in the early 1970's and shown week nights in ten minute episodes of Australian bands and singers. The series probably gave air-time to many performers who otherwise did not appear on television at the time.

It was Get To Know and it also featured overseas acts. I saw Lou Reed in his peroxide crew cut stage on GTK in about 1974. It was a great show. 👏

Wow, forgot about Wendy! One of my dad's favorites - it reminds me of dark, crowded, sweaty old pubs and assorted musos leaning on the walls waiting for a jam! 🤓😄😪👍

There were a great number of awesome girl singers around in Australia and Wendy was one of the best, another was Carol Lloyde who was the singer in a band called 'Railroad Gin' who had a great song called 'It's only a matter of time' which we used to go and see at the local Pub's and Bar's unfortunately I have not yet found a good video of them performing, it's a pity.

Her music was before my time, but I have researched and it stated that she was born in Melbourne Australia in 1949 and passed on 21 June 2013. RIP to Wendy 🕊🕊. I have seen a clip with her and Jeff St John (singing with the band Copperwire). I believe they sung together in the 1970/71 era..... I will leave it to those in the know to tell you more about that. I do love Jeff's singing PS - You have reacted to Jeff previously Nic, although it was a while ago, with Teach me how to fly and A fool in love.... He was in a wheelchair due to having spina bifida.

Wendy June Saddington (26 September 1949 - 21 June 2013), also known as Gandharvika Dasi, was an Australian blues, soul and jazz singer, and was in the bands Chain, Copperwine and the Wendy Saddington Band. She wrote for teen pop newspaper Go-Set from September 1969 to September 1970 as an agony aunt in her weekly "Takes Care of Business" column, and as a feature writer. Saddington had Top 30 chart success with her 1972 solo single "Looking Through a Window", which was written and produced by Billy Thorpe and Warren Morgan of the Aztecs. After adopting Krishna Consciousness in the 1970s she took the name Gandharvika Dasi. In March 2013 she was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, and died on 21 June, aged 63. Peace out.

She was alternative not mainstream pop in the 70's Bit like Renee Geyer before she became mainstream and later chose to go under the radar and do her own thing

She became a serious Hare Krishna devotee (remember them?) and ended up turning her back on music to concentrate on her spiritual beliefs. Big, big loss to Australian music.

Unfortunately, Australia was incredibly backwards in recognizing female musical talent in the 1960s-early-70s outside of the shiny pop world. The first Sunbury Pop Festival in 1972 (often referred to as our Woodstock) had not one single female featured singer on any of the three days, and the second one in '73 only featured one. Wendy Saddington was criminally under-recorded, just one single and one live album during that period. I saw her once, in the mid-2000s doing a couple of numbers with Mic Conway's band at the Corner Hotel in Richmond, Victoria. She blew the roof off the place.

Have mentioned Wendy to you on other feeds, but it should be noted that Wendy was never a PROFESSIONAL singer.......she was an office worker who got a lot of vocal work ( often impromptu ) because she was so damn talented.
No1 with blues, rock and soul fans and the bands / musicians, but ignored by the media, radio and music industry...... probably because as an amateur / part time singer she probably never had a manager.
She used to frequent a coffee shop with live music.
She wasnt impressed with the singer in a regular band, so when he didnt show up for a gig at the coffee shop, she volunteered to sing in his place.. ..... she knew the bands set list and blew everyone away.
Jeff St. John and The Copperwine organsed to film a live performance but vocalist Jeff St. John could not perform due to health problems.....born with spina bifida and sung from his wheel chair.
Wendy took his place and nailed it.. .. .the band kept her on and now had 2 first class vocalists, Jeff and Wendy.
Recommend the professional ( and in colour ) video of Wendy doing Motherless Child........it will blow your away.
