I've had a brass Ensso XS for a long time and it's been terrific. I keep the o-rings lightly greased and have no issue with them. I have a tiny Inventery bolt-action ballpoint I love. The fountain pen looks great, too. Thanks!

Stephen, thanks for this shoot out. Not having an Inventery pen but having an Ensso XS handy I do prefer the Ensso. Regarding the O rings, I have had a couple of situations where one has popped off, but by putting a drop of liquid silicone (from the bottle that comes with TWSBI pens) it seems to have solved the issue, maybe they just dry out over time in dry climates.

That noise isn’t a downside. It sounds fantastic. It’s quite difficult to create a satisfying popping sound. They should be congratulated.

Wouldn't it be better to use a ballpoint as a pocket pen? or maybe a pencil? Love them as I do, fountain pens can be tempramental as well as inconvenient when writing in a hurry.

I wonder if adding a bit of silicone grease to the "o"-rings would help add a bit of longevity to the rings and help ease the friction between metal and rubber so the rings won't pop off.
Just a thought though..... I have not experimented the idea.

2 better looking Enssos with possibly two nib sizes plus money for ink, coffee or cigs vs one inventery with fiddly extras with a too narrow nib ( accessories that have to go somewhere other than my 48 pen cases, which I will probably lose). I’ll take the two Enssos!

The Ensso XS Titanium is available in Medium and Broad nib as of August 24th at 9:52pm central time.

Thanks for bringing us another fun shoot out, I like the look of the Inventery, but both look to quote your words ''a lot of fun'' :)

I have the Ensso in aluminium. It is really a different pen then the titanium one. It is too light for comfort and the cap is a bit wiggly when put on the back. And indeed, the o-ring sometimes comes off. The tiny nib is not a big comfort for me either and at last the pen dries out quite fast. Hm. Sounds very destructive. Somehow I do like it anyway. It’s cheap. It’s cute. It’s special. I just drop it in my handbag and always have a fountain pen with me 🥰

Appearance wise I would go for the stumpy, hexagonal Ensso but utility wise I think the Inventery wins in my book because of the capacitive tip( useful for touch screens) and it's dual fountain pen /rollerball roles. Especially out camping, if your notepaper runs out, you can use a rollerball on toilet paper.

I own, use and very much like the Ensso XS. I would appreciate the versatility of the Inventery, but wonder how often I'd switch between the various modes; once set-up, I'd likely leave it as is.
    Thanks for the comparison!

The Inventery is way cool. I kept expecting you to pull out another piece and it would become a small car 🚗 and you’d climb in. Maybe one of those robo-vacuums? You could ride around like a cat.
A rollerball AND a fountain pen 👍 #pendiversity Thank you Dr. Brown!
Forget the nib and facets, the main selling point of the Ensso is the popping sound.

I'd like to see these both against the Kaweco Supra/Liliput.

I'm not really much into any of these, but the Inventery is a clever pen, and fiddling / customizing this looks like fun.
One word about Ensso as a company: in their kickstarter for the Italia, I backed a Titanium Italia, and they had some problems with fulfilling it. Unfortunately I was unable to get mine and was refunded, but they made up for it by sending me a black aluminium one completely free of charge (after a little complaint on my end over email). That's a company I'd back again!

After your review I buy an Ensso XS in Red limited with B nib. I ordered it direct from Ensso, cause I found no shop for it. The pen came a few days ago and I was really happy with it. Everyday in my pocket, writes really good with the B nib. Only the compartement for the cartridge is a bit to long, so that the cartridge can slip out and all is full of ink. I put a little spring in it, this fix that issue well!
    Thank you for the review!
Do you know a good converter for it, normal converters were to long.

I've not enjoyed my Ensso XS very much -- seems to require a lot of effort to open/post and *loud*.. I don't know if it would work better with more breakin. Hard starts as well.. Ink is Diamine Sherwood Green. Broad is more like a double broad which is kinda fun -- approaching a sharpie.

Hey, Stephen - I've been wondering for some time now whether either you or Hamish have ever discovered or invented a way to refill and securely reseal cartridges for future use (like the second cartridge you just stored in the barrel of the Inventery). I think that would be quite useful for minimalist pocket pens. I'd be interested to hear from Hamish on this one if he has. (Of course, Lord Windermere might have to stick a claw in as well, but he'd be welcome!)

For the price of the Inventery the pilot elite should be in this category.

To be honest I wouldn’t mind having the inventery with a custom ground 14k flex nib in xf. I’ve gotten so used to flex writing that it’s basically my normal writing now. And that pen is perfectly minimalistic.

@K T Lots of people when giving speeches or doing interviews will stop and take a sip of something, it’s pretty normal/common. As I’m thinking about it, late night talk shows also have water for both the guests and the host. So if Dr. Brown loses you when he takes a sip, I think there are other Pen reviewers that may not. Try Figboot on Pens. I’ve only seen one or two of his videos but I don’t remember him drinking anything and subscribing elsewhere may work better for you. There are lots of other pen reviewers, and Stephen is always very supportive of them, so shop around. I hope this has been useful 😉.
