This year I’m getting one and I am so grateful because my mum didn’t even want to talk about but now she’s became a horsey person cause she has gotten to help out with my lease horse 🐴 so happy 😃
If you want your own horse. Here's some advice. I got my horse 3 weeks ago because my instructor and my mother said I was ready I've been riding for 1/5 years now and I was ready so just wait till the time is ready and you'll get what you want if this helped that's awesome hope you get what you wanted 😀
Deep breath, deep breath, you can still achieve your life goal...just calm down.... DUDE I watch scary videos all the time but this was the most nerve racking and scariest video I’ve ever watched 😂😥
I am a Uni Student (In Germany) and I bought a horse 6 months ago. I can pay for everything by myself atm but my parents will support me if there were any expensive vet bills coming my way. I think as long as you dont wanna compete, travel and splurge on expensive saddlepads (cough, it gets addicting!) its a reasonable cost. However, when the vet has to come it get super expensive super quickly! Good luck with saving, horses are truly a blessing!
I also own and pay for my own horse with my part time job (I’m 18 and also in college) and don’t worry it costs me no where near as much to keep my happy hacking cob, would definitely say you need to budget but it can b done and it’s definitely worth it ❤️
I so don't want to find out what my horse costs me per year, it'd kill me 😅 he costs me more than it costs for me to live each year he is a bloody money pit!
Ok this video couldn't have come at a better time 😂 literally when I got the notification for this video I was considering whether I could afford and had the time for a third horse lol
Love how honest you are girl! A lot of people need videos like this it keeps 100% of the costs up front. :D thanks girllll love it! Very on point with these prices too it's not cheap but very worth it.
You're brave to upload this, gal! It takes a lot of guts to face your financial situation... and you're lucky that you don't have to pay someone to keep your horses either. I pay $452.00 a month here in Canada for outdoor board and NO grain! I feel inspired to start up a spreadsheet of my own expenses now...
Okay so, kind of off topic, but I found a horse. I’d been looking at him for a while, maybe a 4 months. 4 weeks ago, I decided I was genuinely interested in him and went to see him. He was an absolute CHARMER. He rode so well and was incredibly gentle. I’m tall, so it was also great that he was 18hh. His name is Jimmy and he’s a buckskin warmblood. Luckily, the vet said he was in excellent health. So, I decided to adopt him. I’m kind of new to the horse world, I started taking lessons early February 2018. I decided it was time for me to get my own horse. That may seem like I’m jumping to buying too soon, but I spent a long time discussing this with my trainer. We both thought I was ready for this. I knew Jimmy was the right horse for me because he was very well trained and had worked with many different riders. He spent most of his time with green riders, which will be better for me. I’m just so glad that I made the decision to buy him, he’s such an angel. Jimmy is the _goodest_ boy. I’ve been doing a lot of r+ training with him and he LOVES it. He likes to rest his head on your back when you’re scraping his hooves. He’s just my quirky little boy.
I bought the feedxl program and it’s super handy to work out if your horse is getting everything they need in their feed. And it tells you how much it costs per day / per year to feed. It was kinda scary.. but because you can see the nutritional values I did work out I could cut back on a few things because he was getting wayyyyy more of some vits and mins than he needed 😅
Oh my goodness! Your one star eventer gets less hard feed than my non-working 16.2hh Standardbred. I feel you on the hay prices. My last round bale cost $130.00. Note to self, never, ever let my boyfriend see this video. Then there's the cost of agistment plus fuel and wear and tear on the car to drive to the horse. Plus many other things. Feeling a bit horrified. Crikey! Aaaaaaahhhhh! Oh heck! Pinot's costs please.
If u need a cheap horse just get a cob. My horse (Harry) goes through a bag a month of food £13 a bag. So that's 12 bags a year - £156. He doesn't have hay as if he eats to much he is prone laminites. His field (Water trough included) is £10 a week - £40 a month - £480 a year. Doesn't need seeing to the vet unless injured. Deworms 3x a year. £12 each - £36 a year. Farrier trims his feet every 8 weeks (Road work helps keep then from flaring) £20 a time x 6 - £120 a year. Dentist once a year (If that) £120 a time - £120 a year. Overall the total cost per year to own my Welsh Section C cob gelding is - £912
Adding things up does get really scary when you can clearly see all the expenses. In the US, pony club requires you to keep a record book of every single expense and to make the descriptions very detailed. Some rating levels require 3 years worth (I think the length of time required is less now than what I had to do). Totaling everything up before the next rating was always the worst part 😂
in ireland showjumping competition costs the cheapest is €12 and the the dearest would be 50 if you are competing in the RDS which is the top show in would be about 200 and the stable costs are 25€ for 1 horse for one day
I only feed my horse lots of hay and I don't compete and I had free agistment for like the whole year and I don't buy lots of tacks we probs only spend 2-3 thousand a year lol, it is possible to be a povo horse owner , I just calculated 3016 dollars on feed and lessons are 2080 for lesson and around 100 on tack total 5196 whereas my dog cost 300 dollars on feed(she is a Jack Russell) and 100 on toys and harnesses and 100 dollars replacing shit she tore up total 500 dollars per year
Wow, I love this vid! Soooo helpful for me, and lots of people will agree with me, to realise how much owning a horse actually costs!! You shouldnt have been nervous!! Great video! Loved watching it!
That was really interesting & very well done Hannah. When compared to a lot of other sports out there it’s really not that bad. Thank you for the insight 😊👍
omg i can’t believe how cheap it was for you to go to that many shows!! in the US for A/AA rated hunter/jumper shows it costs almost that amount for just two weeks of a show circuit because entry and stabling fees are so expensive here... it’s crazy!
Well... now I don’t feel so bad. 😂 mine for one horse is around R43 200 per year which is 4256 AUD for one horse. And then the youngest is R61 200 per year which is 6028 AUD.
So interesting to compare this to the US. Grain is about that same. Hay here (a good price) is about 5 dollars per bale. Here each event, just the entry fee, on average, is about 375$ dollars. Stabling is 150$. So each show for one horse is about 575$. Not including gas and hotel. Lol and that is ONE show! Ohhh boy.
Katie I’ve heard shows over there are expensive! I think the prize money is a lot more though and the whole equestrian community over there has a lot more money than over here - here most events struggle to exist and a lot of riders aren’t very wealthy and struggle to enter as is!
I spend over 6,000 a year on feed. This includes the fuel for the tractors to cut and fix the hay. And the bags of feed. I also spend about 200 on shows on a normal show year. Oh and Hannah it's weird I have notifications on for you but I had to scroll thorough my video feed to see yours. You are the second channel I've had trouble with.
But you love Jerry, and competing. That makes it worthwhile. I just mainly hack around, and enter a few small area shows, so I spend a fraction of that amount. I still have fun, and horses have been a big part of my life. I have an 18 hand TB and two minis, who are all kept at home. (Jan Griffiths, on hubby's account).
My horse costst me about €400/€500 a month per year. That is including lessons, vaccinations and vet bills. I don't compete but I do have lessons about every week and go out with the trailer about 5 times a year. So the total money at the end of the years come in at about €450 a month. So If you spend it right its very doable!
shit dude that’s insane 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 tbh i was expecting a lot lot more so yayy 😭😭horses are bloody expensive plus a lot of pple like myself pay for livery costs too !!!!
OMG I LOVE UR VIDEOS SO MUCH AND U AND UR HORSES ARE GOALS. I'm getting a thoroughbred chestnut mare on the weekend and I can't wait. I live in australia in Melbourne where about do u live in australia
I love ur channel sm I also live in Australia but WA. I own a horse he is a brumby x and is the best horse ever. I wish we could meet but I don’t think it will happen☹️❤️🌹💖
Actually goes to show how much certain people/businesses/facilities earn per year just from one horse, e.g Farrier, body worker, events, photographers, dentists. Just goes to show how busy they need to be to earn good money every year.
I’m sitting here having 1 £30 lesson a week and that’s all I spend on horses except maybe buying a pair of bids at some boots and that’s all and last year I done own a pony week a couple times which was £120 each and that’s it
Kay so I'm determined to get a horse next year and even though we won't be eventing far and wide, I'm still not showing my parents this 😂 Thankfully, the agistment at my local pony club isn't expensive and my goal is to get to states so nothing too crazy...I just might be saving up for a bit 😬
23 is a bloody big number ahahaha and yet it isn't even insane when you think about the price of owning and competing one single horse. I've on purpose not calculated mine because I don't want to become more depressed ahaha
Yes, make one on your other horses! great video. (ps realises the chance of her ever getting a horse due to my parents financial state is absolutely none )
How are your shows and events so cheap ?!?!?! I’m the US, our events start around $450 USD for entry fees and stabling and that’s the cheaper lower level entry fees, one stars here are around $700 to enter then another $150 for stabling...
Keelari I think we just don’t have very much money in the equestrian community over here! So if events were that expensive then no one would be competing in them haha
Hannah Lucy no kidding! I’m lucky if I can do one or two events a year and that is at training level (1 m heights) and the higher the level, the more the entry fees cost. I think the way you guys have it is great in that more people have access to affording competition and participating 👌🏻
Yea, that sounds about right. I'd like to see a video on Dex & Pinot as well! And maybe a Grand total for the 3? I like that you are honest and upfront about cost. It really helps for gauging a baseline budget.
I live in New England, US - your feed and hay seems expensive, but farrier seems cheap compared to over here! Just In case curious! I’m not too familiar with eventing fees over here but I want to say yours are cheaper there as well.
Kaysee Lee With the farrier and eventing costs I think they’d be way lower because otherwise no one would be able to afford horses! Because not many people in the horse industry have lots of money over here
I was in tears by the end of this video lmaooo. As someone who does something quite similar I was feeling the pain :,) someone pls take my horses off me 😂
I'm legit in denial about what I spend on my horses per year. As much as I try to track expenses, I know there's stuff that I miss or costs that were higher than expected. As long as there's still money in the bank I try not to think about it too much haha
This didn’t make me depressed this made me happy because I don’t compete I don’t buy expensive TACk maybe I’ll do a show like once a month maybe a $25 entry LOOKS LIKE IM A GET A HORSE IN LIKE A YEAR
I calculated my OTTB with just his feed... and jeez let me tell you they aren't cheap!! Plus if you wanna add on his dental bills, feet and vet bills... I could be rich by now haha
I did that exactly ONE TIME! As i saw the number i was like: okay... every year a brand new small car... BUT on the other Hand: every day horses around :D (at least with the vet bills it was'nt a small car anymore TT_TT)
The key to affording horses is to not compete or show. I pay full care and only leave property for trail rides and thus my expenses are pretty low. I understand that lots of people want to show, but if you’re cool being a happy hacker, maybe one or two little shows a year- owning a horse is doable.
Yep, that's me. A happy hacker that does a few small local shows a year. I competed as a kid when my folks paid for it, and my horse then was kept at my aunt and uncle's place. Totally doable. (Jan Griffiths).
I haven’t watched your videos for a while but cheesecake that is a lot... and if I understood right you only went to one international...🙃 I’m based in UK and still haven’t bought mine for this specific reason, I would need a job which would pay enough for all of this... although saying this, could you tell us how much did you make from the competitions? Also I would love the idea if you would do another video of cheapest... keep our hopes up 😂
O H M Y G O D. I never realized how much I spend on my horse. I used to own three horses and pay full board and a nice barn, competed all three at recognized dressage shows, and then on top of that one of my horses got a special diet that came with a special price😂 then one of my other horses got seen by he farrier every two months and my third horse had some health issues and needed acupuncture quite often so vet bills were quite high and not to mention he faked sick quite often😂 I sold my 5 year old fresien baby as she was just a project and my other horse is now in retirement and living out his life so I only pay (more like my parents pay) for one and I’m so much happier!!!! Hmmm I wonder why my parents hate me?!?!
I think you should definitely make a video for Dexter and Pinot so people trying to buy a horse and not show them as much can have a reference to go off of because this is a lot of money😂😂
Sounds about right. Do you have membership fees too? We have to have like, 4 memberships to compete and the higher you go, the more expensive they are. Ugh.
I see why my parents didn't buy a horse
This year I’m getting one and I am so grateful because my mum didn’t even want to talk about but now she’s became a horsey person cause she has gotten to help out with my lease horse 🐴 so happy 😃
Can you make another one that's just super cheap for kids trying to convince their parents to buy them a pony😂 this is crazy🙃
If you want to ride and not compete at first you will xut out quite a few costs
I could do one with my old retired horses! That'd be reasonably cheap haha
Omg yasss I want a horse so bad but my parents are not going to get me one 🐴😭
that’s me now
If you want your own horse. Here's some advice. I got my horse 3 weeks ago because my instructor and my mother said I was ready I've been riding for 1/5 years now and I was ready so just wait till the time is ready and you'll get what you want if this helped that's awesome hope you get what you wanted 😀

soooooo as someone who's desperately trying to save their maccas wages to get a horse next year, this kinda makes me wanna neck
Ash If you aren’t competing and travelling it helps a lot.
I am a Uni Student (In Germany) and I bought a horse 6 months ago. I can pay for everything by myself atm but my parents will support me if there were any expensive vet bills coming my way. ! its only for a 1* eventer!!!
oh my god the saddle pad thing is the HARDEST
I so don't want to find out what my horse costs me per year, it'd kill me 😅 he costs me more than it costs for me to live each year he is a bloody money pit!
Grand Pegasi Equestrian how much exactly is it a year?

I do all of that myself (except for teeth floating and the farrier).
Oh my goodness! Your one star eventer gets less hard feed than my non-working 16.2hh Standardbred. I feel you on the hay prices. My last round bale cost $130.00. When people ask me why I am broke. This is why lol
I spend over 6,000 a year on feed. This includes the fuel for the tractors to cut and fix the hay. And the bags of feed. I also spend about 200 on shows on a normal show year.

shit dude that’s insane 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 tbh i was expecting a lot lot more so yayy 😭😭horses are bloody expensive plus a lot of pple like myself pay for livery costs too !!!!
As a pleasure rider, I didn't realise how expensive showing really was!! Would love to see this sort of video on your other ponies
Great video idea as always.
OMG I LOVE UR VIDEOS SO MUCH AND U AND UR HORSES ARE GOALS. I'm getting a thoroughbred chestnut mare on the weekend and I can't wait. I live in australia in Melbourne where about do u live in australia

literally dying when you think about it like this is crazyyyy. I wish my horse understood this video and then she would love me bahaha
Yesss! Do a vid on how much Dex and Pinot cost!
You should try smartpacks!!!!
I hope all the children in the comments whose parents bought them a pony are grateful.
Love this video idea!
yes pls make another video with your other horses
23 is a bloody big number ahahaha and yet it isn't even insane when you think about the price of owning and competing one single horse.
I've on purpose not calculated mine because I don't want to become more depressed ahaha
Oh my gosh! I have always wanted to have my own horse, but I guess I'll have to stick with lessons and showing a stable-owned horse.
Yes, make one on your other horses! great video. (ps realises the chance of her ever getting a horse due to my parents financial state is absolutely none )
do you recommend pentazan for a horse that is worked 4-5 times a year and goes to about 6 comps a year? hes a 13yo raced TB
This is the best video 💙
Worked out that 1/3 of my yearly full time wage before tax goes on agistment..... fml 😂🔫

Jerry is worth more than my existence
Yea, that sounds about right. I'd like to see a video on Dex & Pinot as well! And maybe a Grand total for the 3? I like that you are honest and upfront about cost. It really helps for gauging a baseline budget.
Hannah I’ve been trying not to add up how much it costs to own my horse. I DONT WANT TO KNOW
"dish is eshpensishve already" oml- never showing this mum
Now imagine putting livery prices on top if you didn’t have your own land 😂👀
She did. Approx. $10,000 - $13, 000 extra p/year
Yeah, really. Thank goodness my horses are at home with us, and we own our land (mortgage paid off). (Jan Griffiths, on hubby's account).
Hahahah, I really hope placing well in competitions cover a good part of it
18:09

I wish the shows in Canada were that cheap 😱
Thats about £12000 uk money which is less than we spend 🙈😂 uk is very expensive 😂❤️
i nearly had a heart attack watching this.
This was really helpful so everyone understands if you want a horse and you want to compete you need to know how huge of an investment it is
Can you do one for a show jumper that does few shows a year
This video is just in time for Halloween.
Yeah, it's scary enough, right?
I was in tears by the end of this video lmaooo. As someone who does something quite similar I was feeling the pain :,) someone pls take my horses off me 😂
This is why my pony has been named the atm machine
Dang
Ooh! Didn’t even realise you’re a South Aussie! 😊
I'm legit in denial about what I spend on my horses per year. As much as I try to track expenses, I know there's stuff that I miss or costs that were higher than expected. As long as there's still money in the bank I try not to think about it too much haha
You're getting off easy on feed! We go through a bag of grain per day and hay.. $340 just for hay per week!
This didn’t make me depressed this made me happy because I don’t compete I don’t buy expensive TACk maybe I’ll do a show like once a month maybe a $25 entry LOOKS LIKE IM A GET A HORSE IN LIKE A YEAR
Seriously! I’m broke just buying tack and items for my horse 😭😭😂😂
this is so interesting!!!
lol that’s why i can’t even afford a frozen coke 🤔
Love you Hannah I have a Arab cross welsh riding horse I live in Australia to where in Australia do you live just wondering
BUT on the other Hand: every day horses around :D (at least with the vet bills it was'nt a small car anymore TT_TT)
can you make one of how much all your horses in total cotst per year? very curious about that!
Wow that’s more than I thought I loan so I don’t have to pay all that but wow
Also I would love the idea if you would do another video of cheapest... keep our hopes up 😂
Inspiring Everyday Mum Yep! 😬 sadly I think I would have made probably about $500 in prize money... ha!
I thought you lived in America but when you said drought in Australia I lightened up also I own two horses and It is expensive
When the total cost is nearly double the amount you mom earns a year
What do you do to afford this?
This made me question getting a second event horse 😅
That’s CRAZY !!! Can you tell me what breed your dog is, please ??🤯🐶🐴🏇🏼
Heres hannah, talking naturally about her horses, and theres a Kookaburra going off in the background haha
I’m not adding mine up this gives me anxiety 🤢
lmao guys board at my barn is 40,000+ comp haha
This video 👌🏽
I think you should definitely make a video for Dexter and Pinot so people trying to buy a horse and not show them as much can have a reference to go off of because this is a lot of money😂😂
Sounds about right. Do you have membership fees too? We have to have like, 4 memberships to compete and the higher you go, the more expensive they are. Ugh.
before I watched This I was considering calculating how much my horses cost... now, I don't want to imagine
