@@swedishsaabguy1808 Hi Swedish Saab Guy, thank you so much for your comment. I was told that this car had a turbo, so I was under the impression that it had... Well, got tricked there very good! ;)
The 900 Turbo 16S was such a good car! We had a brandnew in bordeaux-red back in 1988 when I was 5 years old. Back then, my father had increased the charging pressure of the turbo and achieved far more than 175 hp. On the Autobahn, you could annoy Porsches with that. The nice thing was that Saab drivers always greeted each other in Germany back then. Great car! So many memories.
I used to drive one of these in Sweden in the winter on Pirelli 2000 summer tyres. The pickup was like my BMW 1000 motorbike. In the snow and ice it was fantastic. That was in 1988.. still never driven a car like it…
This is not a turbo 16S (FPT or FullPressureTurbo) with 160-185 HP. This is a 900 S (LightPressureTurbo or LPT or Ecopower in Italy) with 141 HP. Look at the isntruments with no pressure-gauge like on the 16S. But its probably well going.
@@Fransenn Definitely only an 900S LPT. The real 16S in the after 1989 got special things like leather door panels, leather shift knob, leather seats with wild leather inlets, leather steering wheel and some other things.
@@Febonicu yeah i get what youre saying. but interior can be swapped aswell. a saab 900og dont need to be a 900s fpt to have leather interior. but it isnt stock anymore
@@Fransenn Read again what i said: only Saab 900turboS (Turbo 16S or Aero or SPG in the USA) had the special wild leather inlets on the seats, LEATHER doorplanels and some other special things to differentiate them from a normal turbo model. The shown model in the video is one of the many sold 900S (or 900ep as they were called in Italy) mit 141hp, turbocharger, no intercooler, no apc-system. You could say they just put in different pistons for the compression ratio, a different exhaust manifold and then the turbocharger, nothing else. And all 900S/ep had the Lucas injection system, not the Bosch one. Despite 900i (16V), 900turbo (16V) and 900turboS could be with Lucas or Bosch injection system, there was no real pattern there in the later model years. Some have that, some have that.
@@Febonicu yeah i know what you Said. But what om saying is if I were to put a leather interior in my 900. I whould al of a sudden have a 900Gl with that very special interior.
You might have problems seeing things like elevated traffic lights but you failed to notice that you get a better view of everything else thanks to those A-pillars. That view out, and the fact that directing of airflow down the sides of the car hugely benefits directional stability, is why the likes of Koenigsegg and other designers who actually think things through (making form follow function) use wrap-around windscreens.
I have 4 Saabs: a phase 2 '96 9000 2.3 200hp, a phase 2 '04 9⁵ OG estate 2.3 185hp (tuned to 243hp), a phase 3 9⁵ OG Aero '07 sedan (260hp) and a '11 9⁵NG TTiD 190hp. The only one in which you somehow feel the speed (due to a short 6th gear) is the 9⁵ NG. The 9⁵ estate, and especially the 9000 and the 9⁵ Aero are really quiet at 230-235km/h.
The Saab 900 is an incredibly fun car to drive. The turbo gives you a solid kick in the right place every time, and the handling is great. Nice video, just like driving my 900S!
Had 4 Saab 900’s here on east coast US. My last one 97 se on interstate on a clear road 120 mph, still had more. I’ve always wanted a 5 door first gen 900, but they only had them here in us 79, and 80 I think. Very stable car. Very enjoyable.
Well, nice to see a fast-running 900 turbo on the German Autobahn. But honestly, I don't think so that this is a real Turbo 16S. A 16S goes a lot faster than 211 km/h.
Managed to get my 84 version to 130mph shortly before I reluctantly sold it in 2008. She needed a lot of TLC I didn't have the money or knowhow to give her.
I like the high seat as it creates better vision for the driver. Also the decline steering angle made perfect to cruise. I hope some new car manufacturer will apply these beyond the conventional features back.
Hi, versions and names can slightly differ/country, in my opinion, this is indeed a 900S, with low pressure turbo, 145 Hp. Bought my 900i16 in 1990 new in my twenties, worked hard for it but still own him. Have beside that a 900turboS of 1992 with red box, 185 hp. The classic 900 is my all time favorite !!
Thanks for your comment. Sorry, I was told it was a Turbo model, but you are right. I only know Saabs from the '90's when you saw them a lot driving around in the streets. But don't know all details about them, so thank you for the comment. :)
looking at this 900 and the tacho its a classical 900 Softturbo, those had the Primary Type 6 Chains, in 5th gear at 100kmh you are reving at around 3000. My 900 was a Softturbo aswell, after some modifications it was closer to a HardTurbo or SPG 900, a new Turbo with higher boost, Type 8 Chains from a Carlsson, Trionic 5.5, very large Intercooler, Aero-Bodykit and suspension and some extra gauges. Couldnt get an Whale Tale Spoiler or the APC Tacho, but maybe i find them one day.
The red LED is probably connected to the knock sensor, it was a easy mod to do. Better gas could maybe give it 10 hp more, but it looks like it runs out of RPM on the autobahn anyway.
For the people that say it is LPT ............not necessarily ... 100's of people have fitted either apc kits or simply boosted up LPT's to , and beyond standard t16s/aero/spg level. It is likely that it started (or possibly still) an LPT becuase it does not have a boost gauge .. but someone has fitted an after market unit .. so it is highly likely to be modified
As an American who has only heard and read about the Autobahn I was expecting the camera to be focused on the scenery/ and less on the interior of the vehicle, something similar to what I drove back in Miami, a 900 but not turbo. But good choice for a car (I have the Turbo now, and can appreciate videos like this more =) Well done!
That was not "a light for the turbo". Thats a knock indicator. Showing that APC is picking up engine knock, and that boost is being pulled back as a result.
Grew up with SAABs. Love the upright seating position. Best view around. But I suppose if you did not grow up with it, it might initially seem strange. That car must have an aftermarket turbo as it does not have turbo gauge in the engine temp and Fuel gauge cluster.
I can see that the 900 turbo is faster than whats in the 900i😂 but my 900i will deffiently become a turbo car some day. maybe even dual turbos?🤔 lovley saab you have!
The first car whit coupéfilter pollen dust etc the first car whit side impact protection inside doors the first car that in a elkaccident dont let the elk body come inside Saab has also first car heated seats and headlight washer and the model 9-5 fan inside front seats ventilation
Based on the rpms at 100km/h this looks like type 6 primary, possibly type 7 but not type 8. Type 6= 118km/ at 3000rpm, type 7= 128km/h att 3000rpm and type 8= 138km/h at 3000rpm
