Always reminds me of my late father. Him sitting in the garden with me, raining, talking about the fruit trees he planted. I take care of the trees now, talking with my sons about their grandfather...
No Guru No Method No Teacher...One of the finest of Van's music, although there are so many. His biggest fan without a fricken doubt, peace and love to all. 100's and 100's of hrs. spent listening to his music and thankful for it.
The song is about events with Derek and his parents garden where Derek lived. Derek was a very deeply religious/mystical man and its all given to Van from Derek…..wonderful Derek and the Inner Mounting Purple Flame Deo Dea Gratias
Been recently listening to some of the 80's and early 90's stuff. Some really incredible songs in there. Even if it wasn't massively trendy, or as critically acclaimed as the earlier stuff
one of the rare live performances i've heard where i dont get the feeling like he intentionally speeds the tempo of the tune up so he can be done w/the show. this is an incredible version - the best. beautiful song.
Pure pleasure.thanku.The late Derek Bell on piano.very strong.so good. This is my number one Sir Van song.goosebumps every time.Iv heard it live many times and a few notes in my BP sores til the very end.
True. He's not going to jump around and dance put on a show like James Brown or Prince. But he seems to be deeply into his performances and the band is always dynamite...and sometimes that combination is more powerful than any amount of flash.
Yep this piece of music is a masterpiece - Derek Bell is a virtuoso on so many instruments it's not funny.... and Van knows how to pick the musicians around him I guess.....outstanding. Mr Morrison...why won't you come to New Zealand?
He's not really a live performer, tho i've seen him live many times dating back 30 yrs. No Guru is beautiful.....and a great album. But the Astral Weeks album is his masterpiece. He was 22 when he recorded that and he cut it in NYC over 2 days. Mindblowing! :-)
Was there at Coleraine University in 1988. Even got to meet Van backstage after this interview/gig...........I personally don't like the way he sped up this song in later performances...but I'm not going to tell van how to do his thing!!
abe forbs......agreed.totally.............this song doesnt work when he does the speed version.and as ya said he does that.( known for bein a prick in concert.like.!)..this song needs its time.its my fav of his ..i mean " no guru .no method .no .teacher...its the best descript of love ever........................................x.best love song ever when he does it well..
@evanelpus Hi. i cant really agree that he is not really a live performer. I too have seen him often over the years and think he is a consumate performer, but not an entertainer, in the mould of say Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart or even Robbie Williams!! His recordings are largely unedited live performances and not stitched together from multiple takes. But glad you like his music too. It has helped me get through many times. Not bad therapy, considering he reckons he is just a singer!
Van the man still rules! He has had some superb piano players over the years including Neil Drinkwater and Jeff Labes, but Derek Bell on this live performance IMO absolutely rocks. If I had to pick an all-time favourite album it would have to be Avalon Sunset. During this period and including No Guru and Enlightenment I loved the style and the wide orchestral mix of instruments, especially the strings section, and Vans voice had mellowed out from his earlier work. Picking an early favourite album, I would have to go for Moondance. Every track on this album is fantastic. This man has given me more joy in my life with his music than all other artists combined!
If it was Dec '93 I was there too. A Night in San Francisco was recorded at the Majestic in Petaluma and Masonic in San Francisco just prior to the Berkeley Greek Theater show. I think "In the Garden" was recorded at the Berkeley show as I can hear my voice yelling "yeh" about half way through the song. I remember doing that as I was overwhelmed with emotion. It was as you said " a spiritual experience".
I recently heard this song on a great local radio station that plays a lot of VM's songs. It blew me away when I heard the lyrics ... "And we felt the presence of the Christ within our hearts" and "No guru, no method, no teacher Just you and I and nature And the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost In the garden" PRICELESS!! Thanks so much for posting this!!
lucky to be in the audience in riverside theatre coleraine whenever the magic of van was stripped right done to the bone.derek bell, piano, clive culbertson guitar.a lovely intimate show.feel like the healing has begun.rave on
@evanelpus I have to lean more towards Veedon Fleece as his best... Course When I was younger discovering Van Morrison, everytime I picked up another album I'd be like "Okay THIS one's my favorite!" What a poet... a man who can point out the beauty when all is bleak.
Think my be my fav Van song, could make a wedding or a funeral tune! Tho if you think of Astral Weeks or Veedon Fleece albums etc it's a tough choice. Which makes his music so transcendent through time.
Greetings...I think you are so correct...he is "Van THE Man!"...However, he is not a performer. And he...himself..."Van the Man" has tired to explain this...he just wants to do music! Still what I wouldn't do to see him live...he actually gives me a shiver watching him...the music transcends his awkwardness on stage...as Georgie Fame says..."God bless Van Morrsion"...
Van is a great pleasure to see and hear you. You sing with heart and soul. I really appreciate you and your band. Thanks for sharing this beautiful song! ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
Van is a demanding employer and conducts his bands - its not like lower level music business with him …"music is spiritual, the music business is not" - Van
And God said, "Let there be music"; and there was Van.
So beautiful!!! ❤
Always reminds me of my late father. Him sitting in the garden with me, raining, talking about the fruit trees he planted. I take care of the trees now, talking with my sons about their grandfather...
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing that.
"Music is spiritual. The music business is not." -Van Morrison

❤Van The Man
Free in soul to experience without limitations.
Number one favourite song from Van Morrison. ☘
No Guru No Method No Teacher...One of the finest of Van's music, although there are so many. His biggest fan without a fricken doubt, peace and love to all. 100's and 100's of hrs. spent listening to his music and thankful for it.
I'm not a religious person. But I close my eyes and I cry.
Van is not of this world a truly transcendent artist
This song sings to my heart and soul. So sincere. So beautiful I nearly tremble. God bless you Van. (Tears flowing 😢)
Van Morrison - our very own Rumi . Beautiful 🙏🕉️
The soul shouter, the shaman. The youth of eternal summers. Song is exquisite.
MR DEREK BELL PASSED MANY MOONS AGO, LOST A VERY TALENTED MAN, PLAYING IN HEAVEN WITH THE MANY OTHER TALENTED FALLEN MUSICIANS...RIP
The song is about events with Derek and his parents garden where Derek lived. Derek was a very deeply religious/mystical man and its all given to Van from Derek…..wonderful Derek and the Inner Mounting Purple Flame
Deo Dea Gratias
Memento Mori @@naradaian
I felt like this period of his career was highly underrated, one of many great tunes that came out of it.
I LOVE VAN MORRiSON.....,,,can not help it.....Maureen
There isn’t a bad period, that’s what I’m only now realising! A consistent over half-century of truth and beauty.
Been recently listening to some of the 80's and early 90's stuff. Some really incredible songs in there. Even if it wasn't massively trendy, or as critically acclaimed as the earlier stuff
Beautiful ❤️👏❤️👏❤️👏
one of the rare live performances i've heard where i dont get the feeling like he intentionally speeds the tempo of the tune up so he can be done w/the show. this is an incredible version - the best. beautiful song.

There really are so many great VM songs it's almost impossible to pick one.
VAN & DEREK BELL. PURE MAGIC.I WATCH THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
The man the voice the song magic .
True. He's not going to jump around and dance put on a show like James Brown or Prince. But he seems to be deeply into his performances and the band is always dynamite...and sometimes that combination is more powerful than any amount of flash.
simply spectacular performance........
I was at this so privileged to have been too a night of fabulous music
Me too. Memorable.
What a beautiful soul. ❤️
one of the most beautiful songs out there.... for sure
Pure perfection
as he walked off I think he realised he had given the definitive version of In the garden Cuthbertson and Bell certainly knew it
Tutti gli errori fatti,,,,peccato,,,lui te li fa ricordare con nostalgia di quel tempo passato,,,,che nn ritornerà 😞😞😞💕
Just absolutely brilliant and very Irish
I think it is his best - and I mean the best forever and above all
Yep this piece of music is a masterpiece - Derek Bell is a virtuoso on so many instruments it's not funny.... and Van knows how to pick the musicians around him I guess.....outstanding. Mr Morrison...why won't you come to New Zealand?
he is the perfect live performer , he is genuine (dont know if i spelled that right:-) i dont need entertainers,he is real, thats perfect!!!!!!!
Don't forget Derek Bell of the Chieftains on piano in this one!!!!
Thank you for uploading this song. It makes my soul sing :)
This was Coleraine. About 1987. I was there. The interview with Van is here on youtube.
Early 1988. I was there too. Great night.
This is my favorite performance of In The Garden. Derrek Bell on piano, it's perfect.

Wow, I never knew that Van looked like TV's Frank. Still amazing though.
.....and you fell into a trance......
This version is good but nothing beats the San Francisco version
priceless
OK critique 5000 words: van Morrison and Bob Dylan different musical genres? Coleraine University et al
He may be cranky and a curmudgeon, but there is no doubt he's a musical genius.
didnt he do out on the western plain also. have you got it?
No probs, Harry. It's diversity that makes the world go round, eh? :-)
Where when?
@liquidmuzic

Turns out they WERE good for somethin. :)

I first heard this song in concert at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. I felt as if I'd had a spiritual experience. I was never the same.

Red Cedar Totally agree . This album is a masterpiece
this one is very, very rare. a gem. rest in peace derek.

Derek Bell can sure tinkle those ivories, not hard to see why Van picked him.

I was there too, just 10 feet from Van, in the darkness. A special evening.
@evanelpus I have to lean more towards Veedon Fleece as his best... Course When I was younger discovering Van Morrison, everytime I picked up another album I'd be like "Okay THIS one's my favorite!" What a poet... a man who can point out the beauty when all is bleak.

Van.
I was there too, sitting just 12ft to the right of Van. That was a special night indeed.
Van is a great pleasure to see and hear you.
You sing with heart and soul. I really appreciate you and your band.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful song! ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
van morrison, the very best ever. i'm so glad i saw him at the christmas special in 1998 in düsseldorf/ germany!
My daug.hter says who's Van Morrison, What is wrong with
the young people today and
the music they think is
acceptable but actually
a waste of time
...very casual, love this, real talent...
This was before he sped it up a little in concert
Emozioni uniche e tanti ricordi sempre quel chiodo fisso,,,,infondo a destra,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I wish there was a video of Van the Man singing this at San Francisco as per the double album. That sounded like the best version ever.
@harrykee
Hi. Yeah, if you click on my username, liquidmuzic, you'll find it in my list of uploads
You can really hear how explosive his voice was at that time.
Honestly LOVE the Music...EPIC!!!
But, I must ask...is ANYONE on stage ALIVE!?!?!
Van is a demanding employer and conducts his bands - its not like lower level music business with him …"music is spiritual, the music business is not" - Van
