    I wish I could have seen this when I was 12 years old. Unfortunately, I have spent the last twenty years in a viscous cycle of binging, purging, restricting and trying every diet under the sun. It makes me so sad that so many of us waste our lives trying to fit the mold of what society tells us is beautiful. Hopefully, one day I can fully be free from my own mind. I have been in recovery for over a year now with more relapses than I can count, but documentaries like this encourage me to keep going. ♥️

    First of all, excellent film & needs to be shared& celebrated!!
    I have constructive feedback though! This could be a 1-2 hour film. It’s got great content but I felt over loaded by the testimonials (the viewer was introduced to a lot of faces & if your investing in them like a character in a plot, it feels disjarring /unresolved to have some one pop in once! / it needed a narrator/main character to keep my busy brain on track !). I also wanted to know more about how intuitive-eating works (like if there are guidelines to balancing health Vs eat whatever is in the vending machine!) and other solutions to diet culture. Not trolling, I loved everything in there, just wanted more in the edit/story telling.. it kept feeling like there would be something in the middle of the testimonials and it kept building and building and then it was over. Letting you know feedback in case you ever take this over to Netflix! Wouldn’t mind resources/ links to research and support this at the end of the video too. Thanks so much!

    I would consider this to be a misguided documentary with a very muddied message. It gives the clear impression that dieting is bad, skinny is bad and healthy is found in being bigger. This is kinda dangerous as it ignores science and psychology surrounding dieting and exercise and promotes a hate of skinny all masquerading as a self-love doco about loving your body the way it is and that healthy takes all sizes... No lie, Serious red flags off this.
    Also, side note, as a Lupus suffer, I take slight offence to the implication that weight loss causes Lupus. Not cool.

    So is all weight-loss diet culture? There are serious health complications when you’re obese especially if it’s to a extreme +400lbs. I’m confused if this documentary is trying to tell people never lose weight or am I missing something??

    • @justicesmith8798
      @justicesmith8798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They’re talking about the culture & the industry. Someone who is very obese requires medical attention & (possibly) medical interventions to help them lose weight. Diet culture & the diet industry aren’t aimed at extremely obese people - they’re aimed at moderately overweight people who are ashamed of their bodies.

    Honestly, this documentary was one of the things that helped me start my own intuitive eating and body positivity journey. Not only that, my facial dysmorphia has gotten better as well! Not perfect, but still getting better. And once I got on this journey, my mental health as a whole really changed for the better. I didn't realize how much mental energy I was using just to hate myself. Now I use it to do positive work in the community, to do art, to work on graduate school, to write, to move in ways that I enjoy (karate!!!!!), to dance, to sing, and to genuinely enjoy life for the first time since I was a child. My childhood trauma was deeply rooted in my body and in shame, and healing my body image has healed so much. For other people who have body image issues because of trauma I see you!!!!! You are loved, you're worthy, you are amazing!!!!!!

    This is SO powerful! I've been on this exact journey, losing weight, getting compliments, feeling good about my abs, but not being able to keep up, because I had to work out 5 days a week, and when I got home from the gym and wanted to workout for another hour. Half of the year I would push myself to go to the gym as much as possible, and the other half I was eating away my guilt of gaining weight again because I couldn't keep up with my body looking that slim and toned. It took me almost 5/6 years to be able to have a normal relationship with my body and working out. I now work out to feel mentally good and to ''move'', and choosing a workout that feels fun instead of a long one that burns ''more'' calories. People don't see that the guilt that you can't keep up with the ''accepted'' body is literally the heavy weight that keeps you binging and eating, and keeps you in this endless cycle. Thank you for this!!!!

    I went four years eating nothing but salads for dinner every single night. I wouldn't go out to eat with my friends because I knew I'd be criticized for eating salad. Yes, I got skinny, very very skinny. And I was miserable. And lonely. Then I got married and started eating and gaining weight. Then came the Jenny Craig diet. It worked the first time. It worked the second and third time but much slower and with constant miserable hunger. I'm now 30 pounds overweight and the weight is not coming off. I'm resigned to it and just trying to be happy and healthy. I'm in a good marriage with a wonderful guy who never says anything about my weight. Being happy is what life is all about. Being thin is no guarantee that you'll be happy.

    A diet is a short term solution for a long-term problem. People need to make a permanent lifestyle change. Portion size is 2 to 3 times what it should be especially here in America, people eat way too much! And consuming junk foods is another big problem, a large percentage of foods available in stores are packaged, processed junk with little nutrition. In short, eat real whole foods like fruits and vegetables, rice and beans, complex carbs, nuts and seeds. You will maintain a healthy weight and be healthy!

    • @karync.6707
      @karync.6707 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Restriction and deprivation often lead to bingeing. This is one reason diets and deprivation lifestyles fail. Once i started to integrate foods i i often craved but had previously forbidden myself to have for twenty years (like Oreo Cookies and Ice Cream and other processed foods) into my diet, I found they took on far less importance, and i just naturally ate less of them, while still satisfying an occasional craving. When it comes to weight loss, 300 calories of Oreos is no different than 300 calories of fish and salad. If someone was starving, the "processed junk" would save their lives. I had to get over the notion that some foods were morally "bad". The plain fact is, some are more or less nutritionally dense, but they all contain the energy units needed to sustain life; calories. Also, "Healthy Weight" is extremely subjective. Many many athletes are over the recommended bmi bec muscle weighs way more than fat, so because they are more muscular and weigh more does not mean they are not healthy. Healthy weight will vary depending on the person. Many people are naturally thin without EVER exercising or eating a certain way...so are they more healthy simply because they are not "overweight" by the bmi standard even though they have no stamina and are getting no heart healthy exercise? Metabolism, heredity, medical condition all play a part. Not everyone can or even wants to be a size 8. It's not black and white.

    • @deannab9511
      @deannab9511 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@karync.6707 there is a big difference in 300 calories of highly processed food that has bad fats, preservites, artificial flavors, unnecessary sugar and void of nutrients, compared to eating a whole food plant based salad that is full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Your body needs something to work with in order to stay healthy. Mathematically yes, 300 calories is 300 calories but it's a world of difference in where it comes from! I see nothing wrong with occasionally giving in to a craving for unhealthy foods the problem most people do it to often, instead of 2 or 3 times a month its 2 or 3 times a week. If health is what you seek you must eat healthy foods! Processed may save you from starving in the short term but it will make you sick in the end. We see it everywhere, we as a nation eat a lot of really bad food and those who do pay the price by being overweight or obese and really unhealthy! Statistics speak for themselves!

    • @karync.6707
      @karync.6707 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deannab9511 So then, we agree. Speaking ONLY of caloric energy units , 300 calories of salad is the same as 300 calories of Oreos, and there is nothing wrong with the occasional processed food. I never said there were no differences between where processed foods and non processed foods come from; don't think any sane person would argue that an oreo was as nutritious as a crown of broccoli, or that eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits, nuts, beans and veggies is a bad idea, lol. Just for fun, how do you come to the conclusion that eating processed foods 2 or 3 times a week is too much? Too much for what? What does "too much" mean? What sort of processing makes a food "unhealthy" and why? What will happen to us if we eat oreos-god help us--three times per week? Where are the statistics of which you speak that backup your claims? Same for men and women? Athletes and sedentary? Old and young? Which foods? Portion size?
      I would also love to find out, which processed foods are, as you say, "void of nutrition" lol? It's not black and white, as badly as we may want it to be.

    I've been working on letting go of my need for my husband to approve of me. It's sounds awful, but as I've come to recognize that his perspective is unhealthy, and I've adopted a healthier perspective towards myself as I am, he's coming around and treating me more and more like his dream girl. I have to let go of that, too. It's not about what he thinks of me, whether he loves me with all his heart or asks for a divorce because I've gained weight over the course of our marriage. It's about me loving myself as I am. It's growing inside of me, and I'm feeling so much less obsessive compulsive around food.

    Diets work (calorie deficit) for many people x not everyone who loses weight have an eating disorder. And not all put the weight back on. If you're thin x happy good. If you're slimmer x happy good x if your bigger x happy good. I want to be slimmer. I'm on a calorie deficit "diet" and I'm never hungry. I have treats x I enjoy the food I'm eating, x if I've ever gone over my calorie amount, I dont panic. No big deal. I carry on. I've lost weight, my asthma has gone, my knees no longer hurt or my ankles. I feel happier with how I look. And more importantly with how I feel. Losing weight is making me healthier. Losing weight won't make me rich it won't change my whole life. But its what I want, and I feel much healthier eating less x exercising more.

      I think because the people featured went a bit nuts and got all obsessive and disordered with their "diet" they think thats what happens to all of us. I have spoken to people like this in RL and they honestly think I weigh and measure everting I eat every day. When I explain to them that I did that for about a month, and now I just kind of know roughly how may calories are in most of the things I eat regularly, and the things I eat occasionally (like fast food) aren't worth worrying about because I don't eat them often enough, and that I eat pretty much what I want in moderation, and I don't freak out and start over restricting if the scales say I'm half a pound heavier than the last time. And all in all I'm a happier person. They don't believe me, mutter something about "white western body standards" and walk away.

    Dieting DOES work, it just isn't in the form of what is being criticized in this video. It's called adapting a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. You can easily cut very SMALL amounts of calories to be in a deficit and not even notice. You can lose weight over a long period of time, you don't need to lose it quickly. A lot of videos like this always refer to diets that are extremely strict and focus on losing weight quickly without actually looking at healthy approaches. You don't need to go into extreme dieting protocols to lose weight.

      With all due respect, you have very little control over your weight. You cannot guarantee weight loss even if you are in a caloric deficit as your body will start to slow your metabolism and store fat if it thinks it's survival is being threatened, even at small increments. I encourage you, respectfully, to do some research. I used to sell what I thought was sustainable weight loss only to realize that almost no one can maintain the "after" photo for longer than 1-5 years and food & body thoughts consumed their minds. There is more to the picture and this documentary is just the start of the conversation. Cheers.

      @@jolynmartin2376 Ye ye keep making those excuses. I was a fat kid. Lost about 30+kg to get in healthy range by making changes in my diet and exercising.
      A few years afterwards I let myself go and gained weight. When I regulated my calorie intake again, I lost the extra weight.
      Your body can't make energy from nothing. If you are in calorie deficit, your body has to compensate by burning fat.
      It absolutely does work this way. You just have to be persistent and actually be honest about how much you eat.
      What you're spewing is a mix of pseudoscience and wishful thinking.

    Being obese is not healthy in any way shape or form. What we need to be teaching people is that you should not diet to lose weight, but you should change your lifestyle. Put healthier foods in our bodies and stop eating garbage. Stay active in order to maintain a healthy heart and stay in shape. Feels like we're promoting obesity here, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease etc.... it's weird

      Unfortunately the same ideal that has been pushed on us women has been pushed on men. They have been told that 1) a women isn't atractive unless she is thin, and if you think she is it is because you are strange. 2) other people will think less of you if you are attracted to a bigger women. 3) it's the womens fault and laziness that she is the size she is. And 4) pornography makes it seem that every man can have the super skinny (sick, likely anorexic in that instance) women. And that's what they should want.

    I realized I had a severe binge eating disorder this year, and am seeking professional help specific to my struggle for the first time. I am making my BED recovery a priority, because I've heard so many woman struggle with binge and purge cycles for decades. I would never last decades of this relationship with myself. I could barely admit that I had a BED, but now that I'm telling people and being open, I feel as though I have hope. I am just starting my recovery, and talking about it is part of the process. If you struggle with food, or coping with food I hope you remind yourself that you can heal. Much love to all of you!

    I think it's the stress of trying to stay on a diet that makes a diet not work bc at first a diet is easy, but then your body begins to catch on to what’s happening (bc your body is smarter than you think), thanks to the elevated cortisol levels in your body start to skyrocket, and makes your body literally gain a mind of it's own and ends up going into overdrive on creating more fat cells, mind you, it isn’t actual body fat, it's cortisol fat, fat cells that of which are produced by chronic or extreme stress. Ironically, one of the causes of a heightened cortisol level includes low caloric intake

    I get that for some people it comes down to diminishing returns, if you cant track or even be mindful of what you eat without it becoming all disordered and causing you mental anguish, and you really dislike the kind of workouts you would have to do to make up for it, then DON'T DO IT, seriously there is zero point being miserable 23hours and 59mins a day just for that one minute when step on the scales and see a loss, but don't sit there at 50, 100, 200lbs overweight and tell me that I'm disordered, unhealthy or fatphobic just because at the end of my journey I found the person I always wanted to be (or pretty damn close) and you found someone you didn't like.

    I love the body love movement but the hardest thing for me has been discomfort. I have ongoing reflux issues and generalized pain. But neither of these are about my size. The first is because of a hiatal hernia and the second because I have been at the computer SO much during Covid. I'm working on both but there are days when they make me weary. BUT recovery taught me that this discomfort isn't about my weight. It is about my body, but I can keep working on finding comfort within the discomfort. Thank you for sharing these stories!

    • @chris1275cc

      They THINK they did, the current trend they are pushing is "intuitive eating" which is basically: Thin people who have always been thin never worry about what they eat, so just be like them and if you are supposed to be thin you will be, if not don't worry you were never supposed to be thin anyway, just pretend to love your fat body, fool yourself into believing that every medical and scientific study that shows a direct correlation between excess body fat and a premature death is wrong, demand everyone find you attractive (call them fatphobic if they don't) and hope when the heart attack happens there's a hospital close by.
      LOL but seriously that is basically it, I'm afraid most RD`s today seem to care more about your "relationship" with food being healthy than you actually being physically healthy. I mean there is a "man" who used to be a woman called Lindo Bacon in this doc who thinks people who diet and exercise have a mental heath problem FFS.
