Check out the video about the amazing score from Swiss Army Man on the "Ode to Cinema" channel: th-cam.com/video/PmlWMYWwxEg/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=OdetoCinema
I love the contrast of one alive man who wants to die, and a dead man who wants to live. A man who gives power to society and ego and the other doesnt understand why it matters no matter how you explain it cause it really is some abstract thing weve clung too as a society. One teaches how to live and what life is, the other teaches why he shouldnt die. The philosophical discussions are interesting around this.
I don't know why but I liked the movie and saw it twice. There was something about it that attracted me to it but can't tell what is it. Thank you for sharing your interpretation and point of view of the movie, it does help to understand it bit.
The main message I get out of this movie is that everyone is lovable and everyone should love themselves, that the human experience is one we all share, and yet we often face it as though we're alone. We constantly build walls to shelter ourselves and to hide ourselves from others - even something as small as hiding our farts - but if we were all more open with each other we'd be a lot happier.
if Manny was lost in the woods and nobody saw him then the interpretations would be more kind - but it is still a movie about a stalker regardless of dead body with gimmicks Saying that we all have similar experiences and possible outcomes is saying that most people attempt suicide, or take pictures of strangers in the bus, then stalk them on internet and recreate meeting them in the woods I wonder if we will get the movie about Josef Fritzl but where he is a positive protagonist with quirky life
@@Wolcik3000 He's not entirely a stalker. Yes, he took the picture, which is sketchy. But he didn't actually follow her anywhere. he was just obsessed with her and always noticed her when she crossed paths with him (rode the same bus). Also, I'm not saying we all have his experiences. I'm saying that his struggles are rooted in a universal human experience. most of his issues stem from the fact that as a society we aren't open about the human experience we all share.
@@peterlewis2178 He hid in the forest next to her home - a walk away, so good thing she didn't had a dog, or anyone in the neighborhood. The pothole of the movie is that it shows us garbage pretty quickly, so people are really close by, so even before the bus scenes we can guess that Hank doesn't want to return to society for how oppressive, because his farther scared him from wanking. People are not that fragile, as most people masturbating have heard how it can make you go blind - we never hear about the brain damage and dopamine misfiring, or how using porn can desensitize people from actual relationships and even cause impotency. The message of the movie is very simplistic that some people have hard time with social aspect to point of suicide, but its undermined by someone violating a corpse - if it wasn't a cartoon logic then Potter would break apart, e.g. having his teeth fall out when shaving Hank. I watched it for the edgy cartoon where a guy saves himself using a corpse that can shoot like a gun and be a flame thrower to fight off a bear - but I was tricked into watching a villain that was a month or two away from having the girl from the phone as the corpse flirting with him instead of Manny.
I watched this for the first time since it was released, laughed the whole. Then texted my long distance bf that we need yo watch it together the night i move in and told him "don't think about this movie literally because it will be concerning".
This movie was one I’ve wanted to watch since I saw the trailer when I was younger. I finally watched it and it was a very well done movie. The movie was incredibly unique and very weird but still good. This was a movie that was better then I expected and while it still had problems it was still pretty good. I hope we get more unique movies like this
I'm reading a book from Freud about fantaisies, imaginary worlds we make to ourselves, and how these worlds can be transformed by art. And I see the movie like that : creating art and life with trash and dead bodies, and mostly with love. We could also see the eros and tanathos philosophy... I love this movie so much. Manny is the world of Hank, his piece of art. He allows his imagination to live by giving it life, like how he gives life to trash.
This movie is a delightful disgusting mindfuck and I dont think I'd ever have the stomach to watch it twice. It is the type of thing I can only experience once
Crazy means it trying to figure it out is not practical not that it isn't possible. Worse figuring it out might even be detrimental to us; knowing the common aspect between ourselves and the it might make us more wierd( since energy flows from high to low)
Now I'm interested in buying the movie. Seems similar to a film like "Weekend and Burnie's" and "Lars and the Real Girl". Something like "Cast Away" and "Moon".
I went through so many different thoughts watching this movie, but eventually I think as the true aspect of Hank is revealed, this whole thing is really about a refreshing take on toxic masculinity, specifically stemming from lonely masculinity. We sympathize with Hank at first until we discover he is that creep who sits in his house and builds romantic narratives about a stranger. Literally part of him is dead, the healthy part, the part that can actually do things, achieve things, is more casually social. The part that other people will fall in-love with, yet he's lacking. The fact that he's stranded on an island even tho we realize he's in the middle of a city, is exactly that, he's in a city yet has no friends, doesn't know how to communicate, has no relationship with his dad. He's the ultimate incel and we get a glimpse into his deep psyche. In the 90's his character would've gotten the girl, but today we're way too sarcastic and we see him for who he is, a man who needs deep therapy and has a completely wrong approach to life. His lonely masculinity is a huge problem and isn't romantic whatsoever, and we need to acknowledge that as society.
The original subversion through toxic masculinity was to negate the aggressive aspects of man in times of peace - the macho, alpha getting the girl by relentless self-confidence of "baby, its cold outside" This loony hiding in the woods to scared of his own farts and too timid to masturbate is completely de-masculined. This is a movie with a script so like saying in the 90s the woman would not be married and he would win her heart, but even now it wanted to have its cake and eat it - the father smiled at his son sending a dead body farting into the sunset - so they might as well have the girl throw everything away and hug the brave farting stalker at the end with similar impact.
I think the thing is, he's that creepy to himself. Manny is his unconscious forcing him to admit that that he's been stalking this woman and to accept the shameful parts of himself. I think in the end he heals himself. It's a metaphor for Jungian individuation.
maybe you didnt get the point. i think its about mental disorders, about finding your identity, about struggle and relief at the same time. its not disgusting, its wonderful, its all he has, its a friendship that is weird but its forever, its my movie of the century, its not just a new pixar movie, this is one to discuss and discuss and get wiser and older and happier!
now we need a movie where the corpse is female and seduces the guy - then there could be more than kiss for air and there could be an "romantic" ending

The soundtrack is still so impactful to me even today I'll listen to it often. One of my favorite movies of all time

YEAH! That's my general analysis as well ☺️
I watched this movie for the first time a few days ago and I’m still not over it, this movie was a masterpiece. Truly underrated film.
That was by far the best movie I've ever seen in my life
I watched this for the first time since it was released, laughed the whole. Then texted my long distance bf that we need yo watch it together the night i move in and told him "don't think about this movie literally because it will be concerning".
Anyone who likes this movie has to see Everything Everywhere All At Once - same directors
Thanks for the recomendation
The directing was great in this movie and I was planning to watch it already so can’t wait

Well, the directors did go on to make Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is almost just as weird and unique

I hope I remember this film. I wouldn't re-watch alone, but I can imagine scenario's where I would delight in introducing others to this film.
I totally agree with your interpretation. Nice job putting it into words!

the amount of quick edits suggest that it wanted to be watched multiple times
I'd rather watch Forest Gump again for easter eggs than this

To me, one aspect of the film is about shame, how society makes us feel ashamed and how shame can make us do bad things to cope.
@@gilly_axolotl I think it's the main theme.
