Painting isn't really backwards. I mean, yeah ideally, you want to do your light color first, then your darker color over it. But I painted commercially for years, and we always did trim first, then the walls, as it was easier to cut the walls in, then at was to cut the trim in after the walls were done. Using latex paint, just keep a wet rag one you to clean up any wet paint spots on the trim as you see them, and really it's no big deal.

I had a Gray period in my teens, my bedroom faced South so I painted 3 walls Forest Green, and 1 wall Black with White trim.
