- The Oku-Noto Triennale is held on the Noto Peninsula every three years, with artists from all over Japan, and the world, coming to leave their mark on the region.
From September to November, there are nearly 50 different spots to view live performances and art installations across the city of Suzu, and even when the event is finished, many projects will remain as landmarks across the peninsula.
Because the train line no longer runs to Suzu, it can be seen as a bit difficult to visit as a tourist, but this is a blessing as much as it is a curse. If you can rent a car, you will be rewarded with plenty of accessible modern art installations for an unforgettable sightseeing trip. If you arrive by bus, you can rent an e-bicycle at Suzunari-kan community center for the duration of your stay, which will give you access to many of the public structures as well.
Either way, if you can swing it, this is an incredible stroll off the beaten path!

In recent years, the number of foreign TH-camrs introducing Japan has increased.
For us Japanese people, Micaela is the original foreign TH-camr.
I felt a deep connection with Micaela, the original foreign TH-camr, who introduced me to the Noto Peninsula.
Like you, the central part of Wajima City was completely destroyed.
Other towns and residential areas were also nearly completely destroyed. Recovery is likely to take a long time.
It seems that Micaela has also gone through some very difficult times.
I don't think the sadness will ever go away, but please move forward little by little.

Thank you for this wonderful tour. In many ways, it's the perfect trip: an interesting town that's off the beaten path, lots of beautiful art to look at, a nice place to stay to take in the traditional culture, and a cozy, rainy day. Plus, a happy and enthusiastic tour guide. Can't believe it's been seventeen years! You don't look old enough to have been living in Japan for so long!

1:00 It's important to do up the helmet straps tighter than that. You should have enough space to fit four fingers between the strap and your chin. If it's loose like that and you get into an accident, the force of an impact will dislodge the helmet and it won't do its job of precious noggin protection.

Irrelevant to this particular video but recently I took a trip to Fukuoka and I gotta say Michaela was my first exposure to the city years back. It was a great experience so I wanted to say thank you for teaching other foreigners about it and other parts of Japan. Your work over the years has been incredible.

Yes, another fun and insightful vid by Mic. Like some others here, I was surprised when you mentioned "17 years" and it made me go back and bring up your extensive video library. I can't believe that the first video I ever watched was right after you posted "Modeling in Japan - Halloween at Fukuoka Now" back in 2009. You and EricSurf6 were the first J-vloggers I ever started to "follow" in any regular fashion. Even back then you had a sincere and genuine approach and a good eye for your audience.
I bookmarked your channel right when you posted the "Going to School in Japan - Fukuoka School of Music" a few months later and have been routinely popping back to catch up.
The Noto peninsula looks interesting and I had to get a map out to realize where it was with respect to the rest of Japan. I'm curious which installation was your most engaging or generated the most response. Yeah, the abandoned train line and stations come with their own pathos, but that is the low hanging fruit as it were. Ruins have a built in effect like that.
Yeah, that’s a good point about the ruins already coming with their own vibe! It’s hard to say what my favorite was.
I wish I had time to see more - there were almost 50 displays total and due to artist preference, there were some I was not allowed to film and post. There were also lots of live performances that were so popular tickets had to be acquired by lottery!
So I think that unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see as many as I wanted to! I really liked the mirrorball effect on the shrine in the water - especially since I arrived during some great lighting and it’s cool to think that a display like that looks different depending on the weather, time of day, and the tide as well.
And in terms of creativity and tying into the community, the noramoji project wasn’t as visually impressive but the concept was really cool and the website is great! I love that they make an effort to be bilingual and share the legacy some of these old shops have.

I had to laugh at your comment at the end about living in Japan for 17 years and still discovering new things and places because every time I tell people I'm going back to Japan on my next trip they're like: but you've already seen it!
And yet, except for a few spots, there really aren't any repeating spots I've been to so far. Yes, I've visited the same cities a few times, but I've never done any major daytrip twice.
And a shame I won't be able to visit this event this year, it looks great, but who knows, maybe I'll swing by the peninsula next spring.

I can’t imagine finding anything to do in Japan except sticking to the high price tourist areas. Their own people can’t find anything to do except working hard all day and flying to Hawaii on a JAL flight which, lands them on United States territory.
