    These guys are a different breed. Look how Sig handled this interview. He doesn't care. He has his world, he's excelled in it, and he can't be bothered by stupid shit like this. This is what a real man looks like folks.

    • @Tiafain
      @Tiafain 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Zodiac581 Yeah, a lot of the guys on the show are real awesome guys. They don't care about the colour or your skin, who you vote for or your faith. The only thing that counts is if you do your job or not. Simple as that. That's why neither Sig or Jon were bothered about the question.

      Won Yeah, everybody should be born with the opportunity to have their own crab boat at such a young age. Reminds me of Trump who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth yet thinks she's self made. You fucking idiot.
      Just because Sig was lucky enough to inherit his own boat doesn't make him self made either. He's still an idiot about anything outside of fishing.

      Be pissed at YOUR DAD for not working hard and MAKING his own way to give his family an opportunity, not at someone who had the drive and intelligence to make it fktard. Svere built a business and a legacy, it seems your dad built a whining fkn coward mouth piece who cries because someone else has more than them. So bitch, STFU!

    I remember that show. He was totally freaked out. He said "the waves are as big as buildings." They had to turn the boat around and take him back to port. The guy was in shock!

    • @Stonkish

      And wanted to jump overboard cos he thought that would be safer. Another boat had to pick him up and drive him back to the docks in Dutch.

    Its always strange when people mistake areas of less diverse population as the same thing as racism. The likely reason why there isn't any brothers on the boat is because they simply rare to come by in much of the state.

    • @DrSebby
      @DrSebby 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Brady Rose ....I can tell you why there aren't "brothers" on the boats....because they pretty much NEVER, EVER go up looking to fish. Nearly ALL crabbers start out fishing in other arenas...no one 'starts' with crabbing really - you'd never ever, ever survive a week of it. Bristol Bay salmon fishing for example ....1600 boats....been going on for 100 yrs.... i have NEVER heard of ONE black captain...and i've only witnessed maaaaybe 5 black guys even working the deck - never saw a single one until my 14th year fishing. Most blacks dont hang around the few select regions where family & friends would incidentally connect you with the small fishing world...and so the thought or idea of going to Alaska to look for a fishing job...or arranging one down south, simply doesn't happen very frequently.

    • @jamesbrothers9626
      @jamesbrothers9626 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sebastian,Just because you never heard of it does not mean it never happend.My family ran a fleat of four boats in mid 70's till 1998 commercial fishing Bristol Bay out of EKUK & Dillingham.When gramp got sick he hired to black guys out of the south to run his 36' Larson they did so well that gramp kept them on for 6 yrs.Till he sold his permit.

    • @Stej-i7m
      @Stej-i7m 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      also it's kind of simple genetics too, white people come from colder environments and are typically more built for cold conditions.
      Black people always complain about the cold (I'm not saying it's bad)
      But even a recent story about Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook being roommates, Kevin Love said they had thermostat battles, he wanted it at 68 and Russell Westbrook wanted it at 73
      So black people are more likely to have less body fat and be more bothered by the cold while white people are probably worse off in the heat than black people are

    • @redtra236
      @redtra236 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ikr it's incredible and whats worse is they try to say all people living in large majority white areas are also automatically racist for not being a diverse population.

    • @gurnblanstein9816
      @gurnblanstein9816 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brady, not true most of the crab fishermen aren't from Alaska. They come up from places like Washington and Oregon. Some of them do live in Alaska but mostly not. The real reason is the works too difficult for most blacks

      If they want more black guys on boats, then start pushing the black youth to fly down to Alaska and get into the fishing industry.. the boat captains aren't searching the world for a specific race of person to join their boat, they take who's there and who wants to work on the boat.

      The Bering Sea crab fisherman is a rare breed -- gotta be tough in a way most tough guys aren't, able to be scared shitless yet not let it affect you, so driven by the potential for big money that they'll bank their lives for it, no connections with others with more sense than oneself, such as a wife or girlfriend, able to make sacrifices and do seriously hard and dangerous work in extremely brutal conditions, getting very little sleep and rest, yet having to perforrm at peak levels, doing strenuous exhausting work, and it's no picnic on board those boats, and there's no laziness tolerated either, and most of all ya gotta be a bit nuts

    I met sig hansen back.. oh 2 or 3 years ago now. I was working for the TSA in seatac airport, was working the body machine and this guy walks through it. after like a minute of looking at him im like why is he familiar. So he steps past me and starts shooting the breeze with the female officer behind me as his wife steps into the machine and my fellow officer comments, "you look like you belong on tv" he responds. "funny you should mention that." and then it all clicked into place as i wheel around and finally look at him. It was Sig, and as someone who used to watch deadlest catch all the time with my dad i was amazed i didnt recognize him. He was straightforward and polite and was a pretty decent guy. I still wish i had gotten my picture with him. wouldve been the best photo i have ever taken.

    Sig handled that well. Good comeback. This reminds me of one episode where there was a crab ship that got into trouble in a storm and needed help from the coast guard. One of the crew from the show brought up a story of a past rescue that didn't turn out as well. He mentioned one guy who risked his life to save his other shipmates and was lost at sea as a result. All I can remember was the first name of this crew member ( Cidrick ) and incidentally, he was black. Although I don't recall if he was a Black/Puerto Rican hybrid. Makes me wonder what percentage of crab fisherman job applicants are Black Puerto Ricans?

    Racism has nothing to do with why black people aren't on DC. It has more to do with the weather, environment. The North West isn't populated by blacks or Latinos. Doesn't mean there's only white guys on the boat. Freddy M. (The crazy guy who covers himself in Cod blood and does the Crab dance) is as diverse as they come. There's also some native Alaskans (Eskimos) in the fleet too.

    Honestly, doing affirmative action with crab boats would be the worst thing one could do. You want people who not only will work, but work safely and with the rest of the crew. Sorry to say, things like affirmative action doesn't care about such things, only you must have X number of this race and that race. It doens't care if you can actually do the job or not.

    The main reason you don't see latins and blacks on crab boats is because its cold. Blacks and Latins hate the cold. I'm white but the reason you always hear about us complaining about the cold is because we're less prideful about whining about the cold then others. I'm ok with cool or warm but cold and hot nope not for me.

    While there aren't many black people or Latino's on The Deadliest Catch (and in the crabbing fleet in general), I worked for 16 years as a commercial fisherman and I can tell you there are plenty of Mexicans, Pacific Islanders and Filipinos working on freezer longliners and factory trawlers. I'm guessing crabbing (and other fisheries) are less ethnically diverse because they're smaller scale, owner/operator type boats own mostly by white guys who end up mostly hiring people they know or are recommended by friends,... who happen to be other white guys.
