- I finally found my nylon latches needed for many vintage ham radios from the seventies and eighties. Problem is that after 40 years, the original nylon latches become brittle and break off. And then you end up with a radio having loose case panels and/or hatches.
I found the correct ones from a company called Southco, they still make them. Here you can find their web site: shop.southco.c...
Search for NY-5G-51-20 for the latch, and NY-5P-52-3-50 for the correct plunger.
As I show here, these are the correct ones for the Icom IC-202 family of radios. But there are many more vintage radios that use these: Yaesu and Kenwood radios as well.
If you want to make 100% sure they will fit your radio, download the datasheet from the Southco web site and measure the hole size in your radio. then find the latch that fits that (hole size and panel thickness are the determining parameters). Southco sells many different sizes so you should have no problems finding the right one. But like I said, this particular one fits all the vintage radios in my collection that use these latches (IC-202, IC 502, IC-720, FT-301, TS-700, PS-5)
No, I am not affiliated with this company in any way 🙂
Thank you for the info on those latches! Got a bunch coming this way and a cadre of Icoms waiting to be made whole again.
Looks like these are what I need for the lid on a Tempo 2020. Thanks
You're right! The Tempo /Uniden 2020 uses these too. I forgot about that. Cheers.
That's a pretty great find!
nice find.

I tried ordering from them and the website bounced every time I tried to enter my info, I guess ordering the small amount of 20 each doesn't make them enough money, screw that, I am going back to installing slide nuts and screws.
Hey een Nederlander, busted! 😃 Thanks for the tips.
… hello - great video! Amazing find! Can you sell me 4 or 6 of these for my IC-202? … Fraser, U.K.
I am in the process of restoring an IC-502 and would like to know if you would sell me a set of these latches? Thanks jim WA1UWX
Sell some of those tabs dude
It would be nice if that company checkout would work but alas, it seems they don't want peoples business unless you spend bucko bucks...screw that, it is not worth it.
Worked for me! Are you outside the USA? Maybe that is the problem. There also might be a minimum QTY, I had ordered a hundred of each
