Just wanted you to know, I did take your advise seriously the other day about having screws turned out to far. So today... I took both Pilot screws and turn them both in till I could feel them seat. Did that two times ever so lightly. Then backed each screw out 3 1/2 turns. With cold start I pulled choke out and bike started right up running nice and smooth at fast idle. Pushed choke all the way back in. Motor idled back down running smoothly. Then turned idle screw down, went for a short ride decelerating in first gear and guest what? No more back fire!! Yea I feel so blessed right now. Thank you soooooo much!

Good stage presence and "flow" to the video with no wasted moves. Clearly visible view on each part of the procedure with accurate and concise explanations and even a little theory behind it all. This video is a solid 10 on the Richter scale. I already knew it all and worked at a couple of shops in the past actually. . I watched it because I'm planning to do a TH-cam demonstration myself.....if I can do one 1/2 as good as he did on this one, I'll consider it an unmitigated success!!

Hey Cody, boy am I glad I found this video. I bet you saved me a bunch of money! I have an ‘06 Shadow Spirit and I just finished the reassembly and test drove the bike. Based on your procedure for removing the Welch plugs and adjusting the carb settings, I am very, very satisfied with the results. I bought the bike with V&H Straightshots but had a problem with backfire during deceleration. I didn’t know if the bike had been jetted and the only way to tell was to inspect the jets. I needn’t tell you what that entails but I really didn’t want to go there. After finding this video, I decided to duplicate what you demonstrated and it worked perfectly. Backfire is gone and the bike runs great. It even increased the idle just like the video and I was able to dial it back down. Thanks for a job WELL DONE!!!

So far you have helped out a lot. I have the 1979 Limited Edition CB750K that you did the carb sync on. I had removed the baffles to discover incredible power waiting. After restoring her in Spring 2021, I had a Vintage Motorcycle co, tune so to get it past inspection.
Things were okay for about a week although some deceleration backfire.. Yesterday after highspeed driving on the highway for about 5 min's, the lean symptoms showed up. I had enriched the mixtures since before. Still some deceleration backfire - so further enriched. and deceleration backfire became minimized.
But after exiting the highway yesterday, when winding down to a stop, engine shut off, and idle simply would not sustain, and would need to rev her. It seemed like a manifold leak, and also the Carb No 1 was having loud backfires during idle suddenly.
After limping home, with engine case @ 240 F Temp, and after cooing down, drained float boil one and injected carb cleaner directly into the Boil via its drain hole. This improved things somewhat. The Manifold Boots had been replaced, and new hose clamps tight for a screw driver but not firm for a ratchet.
Just got back after some further testing, Im using STP Ultra to clean the fuel/ carb systems.
Just a little back fire to watch on Cylinder 1 -
Thanks again for your help and for reading this -

The jet kit changed the main from 112 to 118 and slow jet from 35 to 38. Who knows if larger or smaller due to scale differences. Stock needle with a washer to lift. no drilling done. I rode and put the choke 2/3 closed and it improved, minimal popping. Ill add another washer to the needles and turn them out and test with service tach to get higher idle. I have an inline fuel filter with a clear outer cylinder so I can see it is getting fuel. I checked a plug and insulator was white, electrode dark. I do have the K&N air filter in stock air box, so I am getting more air so, definetly need more fuel. I rebuild the petcock recently so it seems to be ok.
Love the thumbnail! That is my bike. That oil line under #2 make adjusting it a PITA. I really appreciate your time and expertise.

    • @TheMotorcycleMD
      @TheMotorcycleMD  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for all that info! Indeed both the K&N and new pipes increase your flow through the motor quite a bit. Adding another shim may be a good choice, I just hope your able to get the retainer back on to hold the needle in place. Definitely give the mixtures a turn out as well, if it it's not enough going up two too 3 sizes in the mains may be the next feat. Glad you like the photo, that my 750 that I'm trying to get dialed in! You are absolutely correct that oil line is a headache especially when you have been fighting with it for long enough for the motor to get hot! Best of luck! Keep me posted we need to solve this!

That would be a sick video seems less common knowledge more only set people know how, the principle seems the same, but be cool to learn the difference in application

Thanks. I decided to show my wife I can fix a 02 Honda shadow spirit VT750 that her X left behind. It sat for nearly two years because it had a problem three "Bike" guys couldn't solve. Im an I.T. tech and I got it working. It wouldn't start before. I got it started but had to do a lot of small things like replace the battery, fuel pump relay and rebuild the carb. It runs and I can ride it but I am having many of the carb problems you described. I have adjusting it and am still getting some pops on the decal and funky hesitation on acceleration. Been having a hard time pinning down the perfect mixture. I wanted to hear the sound of a good working carb and im hoping that now that I hear the sound and your explanation of what certain sound like long BRAAAA! indicate, I am going try another adjustment today when I get home. Problem is its so damned hot here in San Antonio and the sun hits right into the garage so after five minutes im dying in my pool of sweat. lol. I have never had a motorcycle license or really drivin a bike. I drive a stick so learning to ride the bike up and down the street as I fix it has been easy. Im going to buy the bike for $300 from my wifes X and learn and eventually ride it so this video is a big help on just how it should sound with mostly OEM parts and no mods. Cheers.

I see what you mean though, two of my freinds ran their 2 stroke scooters out of oil and soft seized them, the local shop wanted to charge $1500 aud to replace the whole engine. I fixed both of them in an hour doing nothing but injecting oil into the cylinders to get the rings seated and sealing again and both ran perfectly afterwards.

Absolutely no reason to apologize for sounding like a dork with the engine idle/rev sound effects. When I rev it takes a while to come back down. Now I know that's too lean, will open up the mix screw some more so it drops down faster. Thanks for showing me how to tune my bike. Performance 100% improved and will only get better with further adjustment. Feel bad for the guy who owned the bike for 13 yrs and didn't know about that welch plug. I'll bet that bike has always run like garbage until now.

on my VT500C copper chopper, i have low backpressure harley slashcuts, on extended pipes, and have a over run backfire but mine im sure is from a tiny tiny amount of oil that seeps past the exhaust valve guide...yes i forgot to change the valve seals when i rebuilt the engine..BUT I LOVE IT, as the bike is done in a vintage look, see the videos copper chopper, it pop like an old car or many vintage engines..she uses a tiny amount of oil but that just means she gets an egg cup of oil every 400 miles
that's ok for a 1985 engine... and my screws have been ajusted just under 3 turns, and i have bellmouths with easy breathing filter inside the belmouth. and she has the same 800rpm tickover when cold or hot. she needs choke when cold and that gets pushed in as she warms up, and if i stall the engine hot, she likes a tad of choke to start, so is still very lean.. I will try a further 1/2 turn out and let you know if this changes anything.. but burbling along in 6the in town at 800 rpm, and a lovely backfire if i go downhill and close off the throttle, she gets attention with loud pops from those pipes...awesom .

i learnt from forums that we cant make much additional horsepower simply by allowing more air to flow in the carbs... we need to provide a larger pilot jetting to allow more fuel to flow with that added air intake and have a better unrestricted exhaust pipe to allow quicker dissipation of the burnt gases..

I learned a couple of lessons that might be helpful. The major reasons my carbs gunked up was due to the petcock leaking continuously into the carbs while turned to off position. Had to buy a new one. Also, i had been using gas with some ethanol in it. i now totally avoid ethanol contaminated fuel in bike and cars generators, etc.

I can't even tell for how long I've been searching for this idle mixture tutorial. My XRV had issues, and no one seem to know how to set it properly, previous owner had gunk in tank and broken vacum line so he though " Im gonna solve this with totally messing idle mix and carb sinch." well didnt work so he sold the bike, i noticed broken vacum tube right away when buying. so i fixed that, thend cleaned tank, and after that bike started runnig better, but weirdly at idle, so i tried to set these so they are the same at both carbs. Now I know how to identify the sweet spot so I'll get to tuning. :) thanks!

Hey Cody, just saw your video on "Deceleration Backfire: Tuning your carburetor" and found it extremely helpful. I just finished the clean up of the dual carbs on my 2000 V Star 1100 but have been having a hell of a time getting them adjusted. Since it appears that you work primarily on Honda, I'm hoping that a lot of the information about tuning transfers over to the Yamaha carbs. Chances are they both use Mikuni carburetors so the responses mimic one another. Right now as a starting point the OEM adjusting screws are set at three turns out but the engine response sounds very similar to the lean setting you illustrated in your video. Uneven idle, backfire, misfire and idle stop. I've ordered new thumbs screw style adjusting screws because it is next to impossible to adjust on the fly with the mixture screws inset and under the carbs with little to no space allowed to get any tooling in to adjust. Thanks for the video and I'm feeling positive that this will be an answer to my carburetor problems.

Great video!! I have a Vstar 1100 that I bought and have the deacceleration backfire as well. It has custom aftermarket pipes that I believe caused the problem or the bike might have been stored too long with old gas. I was going to get into taking the carbs off and cleaning, but after seeing this video, I will go with the adjustment route first. Again, GREAT VIDEO!!
