I did love these two, i used to get to stay up and see the program i think was on at 7, or 7;30 pm, i was only 8 years old. And i loved the theme tune to the program it's a classic.
Watched this show back in the 1970s on PBS. Thought it was hilarious, plus, major crush on John Alderton because he resembled young Paul McCartney! Thanks for posting this!!!
RKHageman remember the one where he ironed his shoelaces for a job interview and she set his hair in curlers..which kept..tweaking just slightly during the interview?
@Hillari61 I remember this! I was a teenager when they were showing it on Sunday nights here in Chi-Town. This was the era of Benny Hill, Monty Python, Upstairs Downstairs (which featured John and Pauline) and the classic Masterpiece Theatre episodes being introduced by the droll Alaister Cooke. I loved this sweet sitcom, and still do.
Reminds me of George Burns and Gracie Allen....he's the witty, sensible one...and she's the daffy, dizzy yet totally adorable one.....and a great theme song too :-)
I remember John Alderton and Pauline Collins voiced the Mr Men and Little Miss in 1983 and John Alderton also did the voices for the original Fireman Sam series
That's right they were,as Thomas the chauffeur, and Sarah the maid.....they later had their own spin off series 'Thomas and Sarah' but it didn't do too well.
0:24 - having worked in a TV studio for many years when analogue TV cameras using Plumbicon tubes reigned supreme, I can just hear in my head now the director and an LWT vision engineer screaming in anger at each other, with the Director telling the Lighting Director and the relevant camera operator that he wants this camera to zoom in closely at a fully-blazing studio light (so *seriously* bright!) and the Vision Engineer steadfastly refusing as it would bugger all four of the Plumbicon tubes (such a bright light would cause burn-in on the P. tube's target plate - P. tubes cost the equivalent of about £4k each at 2018 prices, allowing for inflation!). And all the way through the row, the Lighting Director and camera operator twiddle their thumbs as they just knew this argument would happen! Then after recording, they - along with the rest of the cast and crew - all go to the bar or the pub and forget their differences! :) Usually directors had their way, but only after a blazing row with a technician when they wanted to shoot something that put the equipment at risk! (LWT were using EMI 2001s at this time, which were cameras using 4 Plumbicon tubes.)
My mom and I always loved watching this show back in the 1970s when I was a young teen. I loved the intro song, too. In college one of my best friends looked like Pauline Collins.
I remember being in love with John Alderton...I went to see him in a play called "The night I chased women with snakes", at the Gateway Theatre in Chester :)
I watched this show with my mom years ago, I like the episode where she painted everything white including the garden. The British have the best comedies.
Staggered that a lot of Americans know this show. I’d never heard of it until now. Don’t think it was ever repeated in England. However they repeated (and continue to repeat) John Alderton’s “Please Sir” ad nauseam. Judging by this clip though, the show is great. And these 2 actors are *always* worth watching.
Iused to watch this show in NY the year PBS showed all the Britcoms- what was that- 74? 75? I never forgot that theme, nor CD and Clara. Never thought I'd see it again. TY
I'm currently watching Unstairs Downstairs with these two staring in it and I fell in love with Pauline Collins. Very beautiful woman. Her eyes are something I would love to wake up to every morning. Just lovely!
There's a good chemistry between these two (or at least there was back then). Didn't they feature together in a few Nescafe ads back in the day? They were excellent in those as well.
@soulgirl66 Amazon.com have it on vhs, they're also selling the imported series on region2,you'll need a multi regional DVD player to watch region2. I bought a multi regional player to watch The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda.
I like the show, and I was only about 11 when it was made, and had never seen it before I got a copy from amazon UK a few weeks ago. (Yes, there's a way to play PAL DVDs on your PC in the US without switching your region code, but I'm not posting it.) Pauline Collins is immeasurably talented, and probably could have won an Emmy for work on Gilligan's Island, but this is still a good show. It's not as brilliant as Upstairs, Downstairs, but it's still a good showcase for Collins.
i HAD forgotten all about this show, i remember watching it years ago, is this really available on d.vd ? such a great show, why is there nothing like this now on t.v? oh wait we have justin beebo AHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHH ----right.
The only good thing about this programme was Lynsey de Paul's theme song. In five minutes I haven't laughed once. Great clothes though. So two good things.
used to watch this. I loved and miss those simple days
yes they were great days. Tv programs were good not like what we have now adays, its nothing but violence
I loved this show, I also saw it on Channel 11 in Chicago in the 1970's. So glad it's somewhere I can watch it!
me too,i bought it on dvd.
My wife and I at the time enjoyed via Chicago as well. What wonderful memories. The British Burns and Allen.
I did love these two, i used to get to stay up and see the program i think was on at 7, or 7;30 pm, i was only 8 years old. And i loved the theme tune to the program it's a classic.
And they're still together...
Amazing...
They are still together. married 51 years.
i know,beautiful innit? :)
Watched this show back in the 1970s on PBS. Thought it was hilarious, plus, major crush on John Alderton because he resembled young Paul McCartney! Thanks for posting this!!!
John was very cute indeed; just my type: tall,dark-haired :)
My Mom and I LOVED this show! We used to watch it on KRMA Denver back in the late 70s when I was in high school. It was so cute!
RKHageman remember the one where he ironed his shoelaces for a job interview and she set his hair in curlers..which kept..tweaking just slightly during the interview?
John Alderton always reminded me of Sgt. Pepper era Paul McCartney
He is indeed Macca reminiscent.
Also looks like a real-life Randy Marsh.
Yes! Spot on.
that's why i've watched this clip over the year do you think he was the stand in
and the black and white interview from 1967/68
@@dixon6326 The stand in.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You can tell they love each other so much.
Loved this when I was a teenager. I love the humour- whimsical British at its best.

I remember watching it as a kid with my sister when we lived in Bloomingdale Illinois
Reminds me of George Burns and Gracie Allen....he's the witty, sensible one...and she's the daffy, dizzy yet totally adorable one.....and a great theme song too :-)
Fireman Sam, Mr Men and Little Miss, I know his narration so well
I remember John Alderton and Pauline Collins voiced the Mr Men and Little Miss in 1983 and John Alderton also did the voices for the original Fireman Sam series
they were like a British burns and allen...loved this show growing up....glad I found the uploads thx😊😊😊
such a happy moment when i bought this on DVD :) my son who is in his '20s loves it too.
Own this on video for NTSC. One of the best comedies ever! Never stops being funny.
Oh John was ever so Handsome........I m sure he was in Upstairs & Downstairs too, they both where;-)
That's right they were,as Thomas the chauffeur, and Sarah the maid.....they later had their own spin off series 'Thomas and Sarah' but it didn't do too well.
yes,he was lovely, well i'm sure even as an 80 year old he still is,bless 'em both :0

Sounds like hectic but good times.
I love this show; it was shown on Channel 11 in Chicago.
I was happily shocked seeing this here and hearing the theme again.!
My mom and I always loved watching this show back in the 1970s when I was a young teen. I loved the intro song, too. In college one of my best friends looked like Pauline Collins.
Who remembers Please Sir!?
Oh wow this is cool seeing them like this! I can't help but think of Thomas and Sarah of Upstairs Downstairs!
Back around 1980 I saw this show on KAET (PBS) Channel 8 in Phoenix, and I love each and every episode of this British import.
It's John Alderton and Pauline Collins.
Pauline was so pretty.
and i LOVE the retro '70s clothes not to mention her chokers!
Loved this era
I remember being in love with John Alderton...I went to see him in a play called "The night I chased women with snakes", at the Gateway Theatre in Chester :)
I watched this show with my mom years ago, I like the episode where she painted everything white including the garden.
John and Pauline make a great couple, I liked John in Please Sir, and of course the theme tune was by Lyndsey De Paul.
I watched this show with my mom years ago, I like the episode where she painted everything white including the garden. The British have the best comedies.
That was the BEST episode!
I just LOVE This show!!!! thank-you

This guy voiced all the characters in the original fireman sam series
It's John Alderton.
Iused to watch this show in NY the year PBS showed all the Britcoms- what was that- 74? 75? I never forgot that theme, nor CD and Clara. Never thought I'd see it again. TY
I always fancied her
Used to watch it with Mum 1974
All time favorite

This takes me back!! So funny/cute
John Alderton reminds me of Paul McCartney i love John Alderton and Paul McCartney.
It's the resemble of the different faces.
John Alderton..brillaint actor and as for Pauline..xxxxxxxxxx
@Hillari61 me too and after all these decades I still can remember that theme song .
This was the first Britcom I ever saw and I loved it! I actually use a pen name named after C.D.!
I'm currently watching Unstairs Downstairs with these two staring in it and I fell in love with Pauline Collins. Very beautiful woman. Her eyes are something I would love to wake up to every morning. Just lovely!
Find the movie version of Shirley Valentine. She truly is Beautiful!
She's beautiful in heart and spirit, too. I loved her book, "Letter to Louise". Made me love her (and John) even more.
She is endearing in a manner similar to Melissa McCarthy & Sally Field.
1. Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin
2. Blackadder
3. Man About The House
4. No Honestly
5. Fawlty Towers
+Joseph Scott Let us not forget "Wodehouse Playhouse"
Yes your right..He looks like macca circa 1967 during his Sgt Pepper faze :0 }
Ordered my copy....... now just waiting for Network to release Beryls Lot And Moody and Pegg and Spring and Autumn with Jimmy Jewel.
@Hillari61
I too remember watching it on WTTW. Claire and C.D. reminded me of Burns and Allen.
I loved watching this show and a lot of other British tv. Thank goodness for BritBox but unfortunately this isn’t on.
There's a good chemistry between these two (or at least there was back then). Didn't they feature together in a few Nescafe ads back in the day? They were excellent in those as well.
He looks like Paul McCartney meets Sean Connery. Must've been good for his career.
You must make an NTSC version available for the U.S. fans!
Used to watch this with Mum
Theme tune was by and sung by Lyndsey de paul
Very very cute!
Well they have just released Moody And Pegg so somebody's listening...lol.
Claire and C.D. reminded me of Burns and Allen.
Under the word 'Cute' in the dictionary there's a photo of Pauline Collins... (Sigh...) xx SF
If you are lucky, you can find this on that ancient medium called VHS videotape.
I always fancied Lynsey De Paul the shows theme song singer
Signature tune sung by the late Lyndsey De Paul
Pauline Collins was in Doctor Who in The Faceless Ones
@cubdukat
Very surprised this was shown in the US.
@soulgirl66 Amazon.com have it on vhs, they're also selling the imported series on region2,you'll need a multi regional DVD player to watch region2.
I bought a multi regional player to watch The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda.
Their best was in Wodehouse Playhouse.
I like the show, and I was only about 11 when it was made, and had never seen it before I got a copy from amazon UK a few weeks ago. I'm grateful you said that. I'll Google it. Thank you.
Anyone know where I can order this in the U.S.?
i HAD forgotten all about this show, i remember watching it years ago, is this really available on d.vd ? such a great show, why is there nothing like this now on t.v? oh wait we have justin beebo AHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHH ----right.
Oh, CD
Err....they are both still alive! Pauline is about to star in Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut - Quartet.
What if John Alderton Narrated Thomas & Friends
Because He Narrated Fireman Sam And Little Miss (TV Series)
This was the only Britcom you could watch in Boston in 1976 (Monty Python doesn't count).
It's Fireman Sam
Alderton looks like James Doohan
medallion man
Interesting and probably indicative of the times, but she moderates her voice (RP) and he just sticks with his accent.
Pauline came very close to being a Doctor Who girl, but turned it down !!!
Miranda Hart reminds me a bit of Pauline
Other peoples memories will be different than yours...I think you maybe of a different age....nonetheless memories are memories.
The only good thing about this programme was Lynsey de Paul's theme song. In five minutes I haven't laughed once. Great clothes though. So two good things.
Could she be any cuter?
Mr Alderton appears to be an acolyte of pagan warlockery..
A Classic UK double-act. Shame their now gone and john has died. R.I.P.
John Alderton is still with us.
Yes, he's still here.
Didn't like HIM in Upstairs Downstairs
This is a recreation of "Burns and Allen"
