    The TH-cam bar at the bottom of the screen is only a problem if someone pauses the video and wants to type the terminal commands you are typing. To completely avoid this problem, keep the stuff you're typing in the top 90% of the screen. Either that or include the commands in text form somewhere else, like the TH-cam description or a pinned comment. If you have a video with a lot of terminal commands, a link to an article on your web site might be appropriate.

    7:12 He means when you are on full screen and pause the video. I have the same issue. The navigation bar or title bar that shows when you pause a video sometimes covers a command line, and the only way to read it is exit full screen.

    • @BG101UK
      @BG101UK ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed. I have to resort to slow playback sometimes, which is fiddly to use. Also on resume that bloody navigation bar doesn't drop for 5 seconds (unless you move the mouse pointer off the browser window .. in full-screen, to another monitor ..) meaning too-frequent use of the back arrow to catch something we've missed. Common on these types of videos, not just DT's.

    The aim of the GNU Project was never Unix on the desktop, but a free software desktop (and servers etc too of course). Richard Stallman has written that he doesn't have any great love for Unix, but that he used its model of a very modular operating system to organise his new project. He realised that there could be people or groups of people who could work on discrete bits of the operating system. The whole thing could be put together like a jigsaw puzzle. And it was, with one bit of the GNU operating system unfinished; the kernel.

    AIX is still used widely. it's kernel is only 23MB and runs extremely fast. It can run 192+ cores and over 4TB of memory. All the other "Unixes" have pretty much died off. Basically you have Linux and AIX. I maintain almost 100 instances of AIX in my current job. Actually, JFS filesystem in linux is from AIX. The only downside to AIX vs linux is you cannot run it on x86 type hardware... just power. AIX has some neat tricks though. Migrating to new storage can be done without downtime. I can move rootvg and all the other vgs that are created without even taking the instance down. RH on power does not even support migrations. Their idea of migrations is install new instance and migrate your apps. That has left a bad taste in my mouth for RHEL. I ended up having to do it from the san level. AIX still has its place...but unfortunately, a lot of software is going to linux.

    1. The annoying yt progress bar covers everything in the bottom and the top, So many times when I need to read something slowly on a video I push spacebar or click in the video to read it, but because it is on the top or the bottom it is unreadable... and the bar dissappears only when I resume playback... I hate this. The obvious workaround is to make a screenshot while playing. But I think it would be nice to always put sensitive detailed onscreen data closer to the middle of the screen.
    2. Actually I was working for a TV network, It was pretty important to use safe margins always when putting any type of information on the screen. Because People had different tv sets with different aspect rations and different cropping mechanisms and technologies. I think taking the TH-cam bar into account and using safe margins is the way to ensure that your content gets to your audience. Safe Margins should be easy to turn on on any video editor you use.

      I don't know what it is like elsewhere, but on Firefox in Ubuntu, I get two different right click menus depending on if I right click once or twice. In the second menu it says "Take Snapshot..." and that basically does a screenshot but omits the nav bar and other overlay stuff. If you need info from something that goes by quickly, you can do this while paused instead of trying to screenshot while playing the video.

    I like the idea of Mastodon instances that collect donations. I'd like it even more if they collected enough to pay for a staff member or two.
    Also, another difficulty with Mastodon is navigating the pathways created by petty instance block lists. I had to do an awful lot of research before choosing an instance. That was visible to other instances, with decent rules, moderation, and community.

    For whoever was asking for a UNIX video, the best and closest and most used you will get to that while still being FOSS is FreeBSD. It's fantastic, it's stable, it has a saner userland, and it's much more compatible with Linux than most people recognize. I also recommend doing some research on the origins of BSD and Linux and UNIX/UNICS to learn the history of how all this came about. That will also help you to understand the UNIX philosophy which Linux does indeed carry on, with some exceptions *cough* systemd *cough* lol.

    The most recent version of Audacity, without telemetry, is 3.0.2
    I don't mind using this one. It has enough features. And it doesn't really need updates for security, because it doesn't do anything with the Internet, that I'm aware of.
    It exports to formats that are widely supported, so that's fine.
    I think it will continue being useful for as long as I need. And if it stops being useful, chances are, things will have changed so much by then that someone will have already been working on a more modern program with the relevant new features people will need.
    And hey, maybe people can just make plugins for 3.0.2 as a way to extend it's usefulness, without diving into the guts of the entire program. Sounds more manageable to me. And easier to maintain, when the main program never gets updates.

    Regardless of early Unix licensing (which is a complex topic, as AT&T was not able to offer it as a commercial product due to an earlier antitrust court ruling), there are free versions of it.
    FreeBSD could be considered a Unix with a free license, as well as Illumos, as a successor of OpenSolaris.
    I've used both at home (first OpenSolaris 2008, then FreeBSD 2010), serving as ZFS home NAS, which was migrated to Linux around 2013 as its ZFS support become more stable.
    I've been using Linux since 97, and being exposed to OpenSolaris and FreeBSD showed me how similar yet different all those systems are, as well as realizing that the GNU userland is so much friendlier to use!
    This journey made me appreciate even more the huge debt we owe today to the GNU project, creating the base of a free Unix system in the 80s, and the investment they did to ensure we would have a free operating system today. Without it, Linux probably would've never existed, and maybe the Unix legacy would've been lost forever to NT.

    I saw Rust and I couldn't believe my eyes: the state of the art programming paradigms are built on the assumption that the declaring block owns the entities that it declares, with the exception of the declaring block running to an end, in which case the entity ceases to exist or the ownership goes over to the caller. Not so Rust: it instead maintains that the ownership of a declared goes to the first function whereto it is sent as an argument. Whatever Rust is, it is not normal. Perhaps abnormal, but not the very least normal.

I would say this is the next moderately-user friendly well supported Arch Distro. or try EndeavourOS, XeroLinux and Garuda. I had a lot of fun with both Arco and Xero, but I went back to debian based, because it was easier for me to setup and fix issues there with grub, wine/lutris, and I had bad experience with rolling updates.

    If I'm not mistaken, the mainframes that IBM still make, that have names starting with Z, those have a UNIX OS or something similar. Certainly UNIX certified (which Linux isn't, though it's mostly compatible). And that OS, from what I've heard, yeah, is proprietary, but not clearly garbage. They're doing very interesting things there. A shame that it's so unknown to the general public.

      AIX, not garbage but ultimately useless outside of the IBM environment. It has great support for POWER architectures. It is dying out and exists mostly for back compatibility. I've used BlueGene P and Q systems and both were running Linux, as support for applications is vastly superior even if the architecture support isn't as great as AIX's.

    Hey DT! You may have already answered this at some point, but why did you remove the Haskell icon from your Xmonad deployment in DTOS? I thought it added a little bit of extra charm, and I'm sad that it's gone! I tried quickly resizing an .xpm of the icon myself, but it looks very bad and I haven't had the time to really sit down and figure out why.

    There is no reason not to use the updated Audacity. You can opt -out if the telemetry, and even if opted-in, it is just crash reporting. Firefox actually sends more telemetry than Audacity every will.

      The big problem for many free and open source lovers is not if you can turn it on or off, the problem is that they even try in an application that absolutely has no need for collecting data. It's more an political thing than an technical.

    In your browser create a bookmark and call it "TH-cam Full" in the URL field add the following. javascript:(function(){var goaway=".ytp-chrome-top,.ytp-chrome-bottom{display:none;}";if("\v"=="v"){document.createStyleSheet().cssText=goaway}else{var tag=document.createElement("style");tag.type="text/css";document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(tag);tag[(typeof document.body.style.WebkitAppearance=="string")?%22innerText%22:%22innerHTML%22]=goaway}})();
