Justė Janulytė's works, mainly written for dense monochrome ensembles (strings, winds, voices), explore the intellect of musical time and space through large-scale, multi-layered textures and extremely progressive metamorphoses. While oscillating between the aesthetics of minimalism, spectralism and acoustic electronica, Justė Janulytė composes sonic metaphors of optical ideas (Here at the quiet limit) for male choir and string orchestra, (The Color of Water) for saxophone solo and orchestra, (Was there a Swan?) for symphony orchestra and researches the visual nature of musical phenomena in works where sound and image are fused, (Breathing Music) for string quartet, electronic and kinetic sculptures, (Sandglasses) for 4 cellos, electronics and video scenography. Juste Janulyte's music moves over the listener like a wave, bathing you in warm tones and rich harmonies. Drawing heavily on visual aspects of the natural world such as moving clouds and falling snow, Janulyte's monochrome compositions appear to play with temperature and density of sound. Janulytė juxtaposes her ideas through contrasting flows on a melodic line. How I love this metaphorization by sounds which provides me a language as clear as spring water. This is my perception of what music should be at this allotted time. The beauty of music is revealed only to those who can understand it : « Confluere felix ! ». *Lucien*
