Lots of things happen in a 'real people aren't like this' kind of way to make the episode happen. They need to create a situation to get the plot of the episode going and for that to happen, one of the characters needs to do something that normal people do completely differently or not at all, just so they can get the plot started. You're right ofcourse. Almost no one would fix their shoe like that. You kneel, sit or find an elevated stand or something to put your foot on so you can fix it. But they needed to put Claire in a situation where she would be off balance and they settled on this. Bit weird, but you know, ultimately minor. If they had to stick to realism all the time, a lot of TV and movies wouldn't get made, lol.
I've been thinking about this all day, and I think I finally figured out why this scene bothers me so much. According to Dr. John Gottman, two of the four horseman that are deadly for relationships are Contempt and Defensiveness, with Contempt being the most dangerous of all of the four horseman. Defensiveness can occur in a vacuum. For example, a person who was regularly shamed for being "too messy" as a child may automatically get defensive when their partner asks if they would be willing to clean their room before a bridal shower that is being hosted at the house. Although the partner may just be making a casual request that has no judgment in it, the person may still hear all of that old judgment from their parents when the request is made. However, a pattern of Contempt often leads to Defensiveness, and Contempt can lead to Criticism, and Defensiveness can lead to Stonewalling. This is a perfect example of how Phil showed Contempt for Claire, and then the kids followed his example and also showed her Contempt. It started turning into a pattern, and Claire quickly became Defensive. It is a perfect example of how this pattern happens in real relationships, and it was real enough that it triggered all of the emotions of that pattern in me. As someone who's go-to horseman is Defensiveness, I find myself quickly siding with and empathizing with Claire. I'm sure if my go-to horseman was Contempt I would be siding more with Phil and the rest of the family. Fortunately, this is not typical in the relationship between Claire and Phil. They may good-naturedly tease each other. They may occasionally get on each other's nerves. They may misunderstand each other. And to be fair, at times Claire has treated Phil with Contempt, so while these patterns happen in their relationship they can happen both directions. It didn't really happen this time, but even when they occasionally get in the cycle, they usually turn towards each other and make efforts to repair, all in line with what Dr. Gottman describes as being the keys to success in a good relationship. They aren't perfect, but to me the fact that they make it work is believable, and this is likely why. No marriage can stand a pattern of the four horseman, but I guarantee no long-term, meaningful relationship is perfectly free from the four horseman, either.
Come on! Clair about that store thing is so justifiable. I means, what's wrong with the others in this case? So, everyone should accept the blame which they never did in the first place?
