Don could've written his son saying that he found out that he's his dad and could've kept in touch with him through letters. The woman who adopted D could've read the letters to D until D was able to read his own letters. Some men in prison who didn't even know how to read and write would dictate letters and have cellmates to write letters to their loved ones for them. Don was probably very prideful and he didn't want D to know that he was in prison. Right now, that decision has cost Don a relationship now with D, his grandson Lil D and even with Maya who isn't D's biological daughter.
