I've lived in a caravan and travelled my whole life and the violence and animosity I've encountered because of it is just sad, they came and smashed everything up and we're supposed to be the bad ones! Yes that makes sense!

From Stonehenge '81, travelling life was for me and it was GOOD until '86, precarious until '96..(If U know.) We went to Eire, France, Spain and on return, nothing but evictions. Sometimes I remember thinking, Wow, this surely cannot last. And now everywhere's closed.

"I like living in a caravan,
am I such a terrible thing.
    I dare to be different.
Now that is a terrible thing".

Ever since active resistance in protecting the forest. I feel this. Just been moved on 4 times in Glasgow trying to just sit somewhere for the train. We sing this now and agine at protest camps. I love it. Not a traveler, but i.now understand. I am heading more nomadic evey day. Love this version.

My daughter was born in the middle of the night on the byway alongside Stonehenge. The police were at the door first thing that morning asking when we'd be moving along. My next daughter was born vergeside in our wagon during lockdown, that gave us a bit more time.

I was lucky enough to have lived this way in my younger years.....so much more difficult to do now in this country! So sad we've not progressed as a nation with greed being more prevalent than ever.

Brilliant video. I remember well the day a large family of travellers moved next door to us in a tenement in Dundee. They'd never lived in a house before.
My mother thought we'd be murdered in our beds. lol! They became the best neighbours we ever had. The salt of the earth. McPhees they were.

Interesting to hear from the lady talking about the Scottish travellers being descended from the highland clans who were evicted by their landlords & had no choice but to live on the side of the road. So similar to the Irish travellers' history. Great song, really sad.

The History of Scottish and Irish travellers is deeply connected, through our queen Scotia and her descendants, & the act in the middle ages that outlawed the Egyptians is all connected

    Lyrics
Born in the middle of the afternoon
In a horsedrawn carriaage down the old A5
The big twelve wheeler shook my bed,
"You can't stay here" the policeman said.

You'd better get born in some place else.
Move along, get along, Move along, get along,
    Go! Move! Shift!
    Born at tatie liftin’ time
In a noble tent by a tatie field.
The farmer said, "The work's all done
It's time that you was moving on."
You'd better get born in some place else.
Move along, get along, Move along, get along,
    Go! Move! Shift!
Born at the back of a hawthorn hedge
Where the black hole frost lay on the ground.
No eastern kings came bearing gifts.
Instead the order came to shift.
You'd better get born in some place else.
Move along, get along, Move along, get along,
    Go! Move! Shift!
The eastern sky it was full of stars
And one shone brighter than the rest
The wise men came so stern and strict
    brought the orders to evict
You'd better get born in some place else.
move along, get along, Move along, get along,
    Go! Move! Shift!
    Wagon, tent or trailer born,
Last month, last year or in far off days.
Born here or a thousand miles away
There’s always men nearby who'll say
You'd better get born in some place else.
move along, get along, Move along, get along,
    Go! Move! Shift!
    Move along, get along,
    Go! Move! Shift!

I've met travellers in Scotland. Not the new age crap, the real thing, the descendants of clans or from English stock.
They're the best folks in the world, they know what it's like to struggle, they know what it's like to hope, and they bring their kids up in ways the city folk can learn from.

@panzerkeil "Gypsies met the high demand for seasonal employment on farms. During the late summer and early autumn, Gypsies harvested fruits and vegetables. This kind of employment was "plentiful, regular, and temporary" and thus perfectly suited to the Gypsy lifestyle. They also followed a diverse number of other trades, such as chair-bottoming, basket-making, rat-catching, wire-working, grinding, fiddling, selling fruit, fish, and earthenware, and mending bellows. " (Folkmag)

    • @georgedrum1299
      @georgedrum1299 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Gypsies working on farms sadly came to an end in the late 90s, with the government initiatives suchlike the introduction of gang master registration, thus the job was done and we were displaced & replaced with imported labour force at supposed cheaper cost 🤕

Until you have personally lived in a country where war, rape and death was at your door, or are persecuted because of you birth keep your hatred to yourself

Tbh I don't any travelers children that need social services. Their parents work - they are usually self employed so support themselves and the communities they live in. These kids grow up with an open mind therefore they are not afraid of people or things that are different and so are less likely to be racist and violent people. They are shown equality not towards all sexes, but all races too All your comments have done is show you to be a bigot

New age travellers .Not real people of the road.Stewarts,Robertson, were some of the famous traveller in.Scotland.All were champion pipers and great soldiers of the highland regiments.Well truelly decorated and brave.I am a Struan half stewart half Robertson.Aberdeenshire.After culloden all was lost.Fact.Hardly any traveller can speak the cant now ie gadge, manishee, hornys lol do not really like the latter. Most travellers now have houses. In past years they did live in caravans and were gentlemen and ladies of the highway.Yet we or the past travellers were persecuted worse than a dog I love dogs .The so called travellers I know now have 5 houses and are make belief travellers.Changed days.British by birth a highlander by the grace of god.A the best to u gadges manishees

I do not believe that story about being moved on in the middle of giving birth. If it was true all the people had to do was ignore the police officer. If they got arrested then the mother would have had her baby in the police cells in the presence of a doctor and the press would have had a field day.
