  • We headed up to a little village called Utsjoki in Lapland Finland for a guided fishing tour with Hans Pieski a local fishing guide up in one of the most renowned salmon fishing waters in the world.
Water levels were nearly at an all time low and tough fishing but with Hans knowing his backyard waters and how the fish react and where they like to sit, we were in good hands. With very few fish caught by other groups, our group was one of the few that actually caught a few thanks to Hans, day 3 ended up being our best day.
A few fish were kept for food as this is the time of the year that Hans goes out to try and get his quota of fish to feed his family over the winter. The winters up here in Utsjoki Lapland can get down to - 40 degrees and everything is completely frozen in the winter.
A big thanks to Hans Pieski and Hannu Holmberg from 70north.net for guiding us through for an epic adventure trip that will not be forgotten.
we highly recommend a trip chasing salmon in this area with hans as the salmon can get up to 25kg and boy one of those on the fly would be fun. We are already planning on returning to find that monster.

    Thanks for watching !

The appreciation for fish is zero. Respect is missing even if the catch is great.

Where is the respect for nature and its creatures? This is no way to fish! Where is the feumer to land the fish gently. An indictment of the fishing guild. I hope that this will not be imitated.

I agree the way these idiots treat fish is a disgrace. Why they think it should be necessary to try to stick a gaff into a fish I'm not quite sure.

Have fished Vetsjiko with friends in 2022, was an amazing experience. Hans is an amazing guide and person! Will definitely come back to check all those small deep holes, haha ;)

Question, did you take the fish with you?? Because that might be the only reason to man handle the fish

Just got permits to vetsi mid july. Any tips? What flies did you use?

Nice mate, you will love vetsi. we used a fly called Sarvijaakko (olive green) for the salmon. its one of the most popular fly they use up there and the salmon love them. The rivers where an all time low last summer so fishing was very tough but we found salmon at the base of little fast flowing water and fished down stream to them and jus let the fly float down with the current. The Grayling where a good size and we caught them on a dry fly (highland blue dun). also we fished at night time so from around 10:00pm until 07:00am in the morning less people around but check every little deep hole you see :-). We look forward to hearing how you go mate!

@@ultimateadventurefishinghu8605 Funny thing is, we were in the wilderness for 2 weeks last july and we crossed the river twice. Not having permits really felt bad when we saw how beautiful the river was. Luckily on our way back we met a local who told we could fish with his permit since he owned some land there, and we did for 10 minutes. Got 3 nice graylings. That flyfisherman was a true gentleman. What size were the sarvijaakko flies and was it 2 hook? Just got a #7 weight rods and im planning to try both dry and regular fly for salmon. I have smaller rods for grayling and trout aswell. Thanks in advance dude, i really appreciate the tips.

@@Juuhjooh There are some nice locals up there for sure. and some awesome size Grayling too. To be honest i can't remember the size we used but it did have 2 hooks mate. make sure you have a lot of backing on your fly rod because if you hook a big one and he runs the wrong way you will be up for a sprint chasing him down stream :-) i ended up putting a lot of thick braid for backing and had roughly 100m i was told by a local. We used a 5 -6 weight Loomis. more chance to catch the salmon on the Sarvijaakko flies but not impossible on a dry at all. Grayling loved the dry up there. I am not sure how the river levels are this year but i really hope there up more than last year then your in for a good time :-). We have a friend up there called Hans who has ( www.70north.fi/home.html ) is also a good contact and he has some amazing Salmon and grayling fishing in his area on the river. Good luck mate we are looking forward to hearing how you go !

Nice video! For those of you planning a trip up to the Tana/Teno river, the salmon population is at an all time low at the moment because of overfishing by local fishermen fishing for salmon in the river with nets over the last couple hundred years. There are currently 2-300 people taking roughly 50% of ALL caught salmon in the river. Steps have been taken by the Norwegian and Finnish government to reduce the fishing by aproximately 30%, but it's going to take 5-10 years time before we see the effect.
I fish in the river all season from june to august and consider myself lucky if I manage to catch more than 5 salmon.

Thanks for your information you gave us Jens. It was truely a magical scenic fishing area. We would love to visit again when the water levels are much better than this trip.

Just bought 5 fishing licenses to Vetsijoki in mid July. Its going to be tough fishing if the water is low and warm.

Today, only recreational fishing should be allowed, i hope. No one’s local life there is anymore dependent on fishing.
