  • A packed day of development on my indie game "Equilinox", the nature simulation game that I'm currently developing in Java using OpenGL.
    Equilinox on Steam:
    store.steampow...
    The Equilinox website:
    equilinox.com
    The bug-fixing was a bit dull this week so I thought I'd save all the interesting tasks for the end of the week and have one exciting gamedev-filled day to show you!
    Also, thanks to everyone for your feedback about the logos in the last couple of weeks! It's been really useful for me.

    I'm currently studying and almost finished learning most of what i need to know in C#. I'm planning 2 games and i want both to use the low poly art style.
    You have been my biggest driving force and source of inspiration. I wish to be like you and even one day collab with you.
    Oh and I'm a college student too. 1/2 year more and I'll have learnt enough to start my games. Thanks for inspiring and motivating me.

      dela vago with development theres never a "perfect" moment to start as the process is iterative, your constantly learning. My advice is to just start now and learn as you go, maybe your first game or two doesn't go to plan but the experience you will have gained is invaluable. Long story short, don't put off until tomorrow what can be done today and good luck!

      YES it's so satisfying in AOE when u figure out a new path. Maybe have the map "unfold" in a hexagon pattern or something.

      Have you lived on your own or with another person that isn't considered family? If this man is developing a game and he's already a few years into it, then most likely he's already well established in terms of finances. His meals are lite and inexpensive, he most likely lives very frugal. Sustaining isn't very difficult if you plan things accordingly

    I don't know why, but I can't help seeing the leaf of the new logo as a green Habanero chilli.
    I think you should make it a little flatter/softer. Perhaps by using shades of green, which differ less in brightness? Or reduce the contrast of the leaf overall?
    I'm not an illustrating expert, but I hope you understand what I mean ^^

    • @ThinMatrix
      @ThinMatrix  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha, my mum also told me she thought it looked like a chilli! :P I think it's probably to do with the shading, making it look convex instead of concave. I'll try and fix it!

    You've got an interesting game concept. A self containing, sustainable, adapting ecosystem. Ultima Online did something along similar lines when it first came out. You clearly know your way around the keyboard and you're passionate about what you do and want to do it well.
    I've gotta ask though; Have you considered any other names for the game? From a Marketing perspective-- Equilinox doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. It doesn't seem to be something that you can easily bring up in conversation. It would be rather tragic if after spending all of this effort in making this game if wasn't well received based on the title not ringing any bells or being said aloud rather than on the gameplay mechanics, graphics, ui, controls and so on.
    The name conjures all sorts of things. "Equal, Equinox, Linux?" It might seem like a small point in comparison to the rest of what composes a game experience but the name can make or break whether something is discussed and thus whether it is well received or not.

      Don't bother waiting a year. You can learn to code your first game in less than 2 weeks using Udemy.
      College is more theoretical than practical. More thought than function. More planning than action.
      Get a course on Python or Java and dive into it.

      There are a lot of different coding languages, some easier then others. Easiest I can think of would be Blocks, hardest would be JavaScript. Now in your computer classes in middle school, you learned blocks, didn't you? The next thing I would recommend is Lua. Buy a programming book for it, and you can learn most of the basics. Practice, and attempt to make games with it. An engine that uses Lua is www.roblox.com . Once you get the hang of it, move on to Python, and then Java. Do not switch between them too fast, By doing these languages, you will likely have some more understanding of what code is, and what is does.

    Just getting into game development myself (not studying it, I finished school long time ago), so I got this awesome suggested video. Thx for showing this behind the scene, you earned another sub.

    The map would look a lot better in a circle shape. And maybe some particles at the edge of the map which look like its a floating island. So the water flows down as waterfall into clouds.

    • @lubaka8269

      Circle shape of the island would be an awesome idea! Maybe add it as a world customization option

      I love that idea except the circle shape, I think a hexagon or something like that would fit more into the looks of the game

      Would be impossible to have a good circle unless he uses some sort of "fog" or prevents the rendering of the pixels outside the radius, which I'm not sure it's possible..

    Man I can barely make a game with Unity, and you made your own engine for your game.

    You should ease all the animations. They really look stiff and unnatural at the moment and animation easing is really easy to do, so why not?
    *EDIT:* I'm referring to the UI related animations, not the in-game ones. Sorry for the misunderstanding. :)

    • @privateecki8096

      @ThePC007 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was actually refering to the UI-animations, not the in-game ones. I'm fine with how the in-game ones look like, but the user interface really needs some easing.

      Yeah, I think so too. I'm just using a square world at the moment because it's more convenient seeing as the world is grid based, but it shouldn't be too hard to get it working nicely with a circular world.
