Thanks for sharing the links and the movie! I feel horrible for the parents but glad they found some peace. I'm also a "boat person" whose family briefly stayed at one of the UN-run refugee camps in Malaysia although I believe we were on a different island. As an innocent 3-yr. old, I only remember it as "fun"- rising in the morning to run down to the beach to play with rocks and crabs with the other kids. But as I grew up, my parents explained further. We were lucky because we did not encounter hunger, foul weather, pirates and had an experienced captain who actually wrecked his fishing boat on purpose upon landing to decrease the chances of us being told to go back to sea. One day, I was eating lunch at a research meeting at my university with 12 colleagues and conversation revealed that more than half of us came from refugee backgrounds, whether personally or via parents, from places as far flung as Lebanon, Cuba, Russia, China, Romania, Sudan, etc. These days, when I hear about "boat people" crossing the Mediterranean to escape conflict or Hondurans crossing the US border to escape the drug wars, I think that's not too far from where I was 4 decades ago.
All I know is Indonesian and Malaysian people didn't accept boat people at first bcoz they didn't know if their law allowed it... They make sure that viet people will not enter their country.. that's what have been thought to me.. although I'm not so sure if it's true
the problem is more on vietnamese government. they did not allow malaysia & indonesia to take the refugees. during that era, the sentiment between communist and democracy countries is high. it is not like today, as the relations between south east asia nations is better under asean. vietnemese gov afraid if malaysia & indonesia would train vietnemese (which are from south vietnam) to against vietnemese government. this is especially malaysia, where vietnamese government has a bad record when they provided support to malaysia communist party in the war against malaysia government. however, both countries don't have any intention. this is what vietnemese government don't care of their own peoples at the sea without food and danger from pirates attack. both countries are also preasured by, not to intervene on the refugees issue. at the end, they agreed not to let the refugees to stay but they will house the refugees for temporary before other countries (such as US, Hong Kong) take them. even today, when the refugees came and visit the island, vietnemese government requested malaysia and indonesia not to build any memorial. in this case, malaysia & indonesia looking at perspective on human, rather than vietnemese government more on politics even though the refuges are their own peoples. need to remember that in 1970s, Malaysia & Indonesia is still a poor country.
Our family are those of the surviving 137,000 refugees that made it to Australia 🇦🇺 in 1979 from Indonesia. We too landed in Malaysia 🇲🇾 & they rejected us & dragged us back out to sea. My brave mum who was the captain of our vessel 777 stood up to chop off the boat so we could be free from them pulling us further out to sea to die! Why did the authorities do that? Why couldn’t they be kind & help those less fortunate. I will never go to Malaysia 🇲🇾! Never! My heart goes out to that couple that lost their two children & then had to bury them. Omg, how they endured that is unimaginable. I was only 5 years old back then. I hear about my families journey many times from my mother. I wish we could retrace the camp we stayed in for 6 months in Indonesia 🇮🇩.
Indonesia & Malaysia rejected in the earlier phase ... but later accepted the refugees. the problem it is more on vietnamese government. they did not allow malaysia & indonesia to take the refugees.. vietnem gov afraid malaysia & indonesia would train vietnemese to fight against vietnemese government. in malaysia, vietnam government has a bad record when they provided support to malaysia communist party in the war. for the record, malaysia had taken ~ 250,000 vietnam refugees, despite malaysia is a poor country at that time. now, the situation is different. relationship between vietnam and other south east asia nations is better. even, many vietnemese working in malaysia. you should blame vietnam communist government, not other country. they don't care of their own peoples at the sea without food and danger from pirates attack. for your info, vietnemese government also requested malaysia not to build any memorial at bidong island.
+Rigged Democracy Well, i live in one, so trust me in this. As well as the country name appear to be what it seems to be. i highly suggest you to come and live to experience one and give me your second thought
The Vietnamese communist always boasted of killing their own people. In the name of fighting the west imperialism and colonialism, the Vietnam communist regime in fact killed mostly and most of Vietnamese people in the war. Upon their victory, they inflicted the hugest political persecution, religion and culture cleansing, private property seizure on their own Vietnamese people, all these amounting to the severest humanity disaster ever in Vietnam history. No doubt it is communist aggression and expansionism. It is no different what the Taliban, Al-qaeda, ISIS, are doing, kill mostly Islamic people instead of infidels, but in the name of jihad, lying that it’s a war against the west imperialism.
Bitter memories the way the Malaysia government mistreated the refugees…Thousands thought they have reached the shore of freedom, instead, lost their lives when the Malaysian navy put them on broken boats by force and pulled them out to the blustery sea in the middle of the night…Most of them didn’t survive 😢❤
You can't blame my blessful country, Malaysia, for that. Maybe Malaysia didn't have experience on refugees initially but later on they eventually sort it out. Moreover we Malaysian, like Western countries, are not naive. We have brain too. Not every problem can be solved with "humanity" slogan alone. If there is , there will be no war and you wouldn't fled your country aren't you? In the end, we accommodate and let you stay in our small country albeit temporary. And the devil is still your former country. Don't you forget that!! And please make beneficial use of your stay in the Western countries now to uplift your IQ and be more rational.
Great story.. We were the same boat people in 1978 but we had 12 total and we all were lucky enough to all made it to Malaysia..🙏🙏
"Paradise is paradise, even if it was a small paradise." Wow, what thankfulness.
