Shikamaru's dad is a pure veteran as well. He probably lost friends and other people since his time were filled with a lot more conflicts. So, taking that into account, the scene makes a lot more sense and holds more tension.

Asuma was the only best teacher in whole naruto series. He was best lover, never hesitate to help his students and has always treat his student with food.
Growing up without a father, this hit extra hard for me. When i first saw it i cried. I didn't even know I was holding stuff in till it started pouring out. I find it amazing how you can find growth and wisdom in the oddest of places. For me it was an animated show, others its a book or just a random passerby. Thats beautiful.
Oh there's so much to learn from this anime... I don't think it's just an anime. This teaches people keep going to matter what to believe in them selves respect their adversary when to break your own ideals challenge your thinking . I mean so many lessons
I know how it feels to hold your tears for so long, and lying to yourself that it's all fine and that nothing is wrong. but then you understand you just have to admit that's something is wrong, and that you feel bad. And when that happens, you begin to cry like a baby and you realize you just can't stop crying. And while you crying you keep asking yourself what the hell is wrong with you and why it doesn't stop. That's why this scene hits me so hard, it's just like this. Tears has so much meaning, only person who experienced it himself can understand

When I'm alone, I'm capable of shedding a few tears because of this, and that. But because of the insecurity, I can't really let it out, even if it's sounds dumb. Cry alone feels unsafe. This scene and this chapter imo is the best in the whole Naruto series, the script and the direction is so deep, little details like the frame Shikamaru informing the news to kurenai makes you a knot in the throat. I knew before that Azuma was going to die, but seeing this chapter hits me really hard.

Remember Shikamaru almost wanted to quit the shinobi life few year ago but his dad reminded him that Shikamaru may save lives of his shinobi partner in the future if he didn’t quit. That didn’t turn out well in the future and Asuma died when partnered with Shikamaru. Imagine the agony he’s experiencing here
Shikaku is the best dad, not only he actually imparts fatherly wisdom to Shikamaru in both character and ninjutsu but he is the only adult who encourages his son to interact with Naruto and understood his power is important to the Shinobi forces
I didn't cry at this scene, but it did leave an impression. Because.... I know that's EXACTLY how I'm gonna react if someone close to me dies. Blank face, dead eyes, wants to be alone all time, not eat and give me some space rather than grieving with others. And if someone tries to talk to me (esp completely different way than I prefer to be approached) , I'll lash out. Yup, "LET IT ALL OUT" , that's all it will take to break down.. So relatable.. Kinda understand now why we have the same personality type.
Good lord what a scene..the whole time just a quiet serene sincere atmosphere..crickets in the background..moonlit night...a heavy heart...coolest dad (aside from iruka hehe) in the series making his presence felt...all in one scene. Glad they didn't go overboard with the music as well. It played out perfectly.
Shikamaru.. Genuinely one of the greatest characters to have been penned by Kishimoto. Up there with Itachi. I lost my mother in November to some unnatural circumstances, and I really can't stress how the Naruto experience helped me deal with it..
Damn this scene is one of my favourites. Why? Just look at the shadows on their clothes and faces. Look at the reindeer and that art on that door. Look at their hand movements while moving shogi pieces. Then the gradually increasing pace of the moves of their pieces. Then the sudden outburt of anger from shikamaru. And ofc the deep meaning in this scene with context. Amazingly done.
This is the scene. THE scene. God damn this is perfect. The body-language alone is just.. perfect. Watch the original scene instead of this cut down version, it's soo much better, watching Shikamaru crumple up more and more as his father praises him more and more is just one of the most genuine animated scenes I have ever seen. I feel like this episode specifically was looking different than the other naruto episodes, in terms of animation it had a little chainsaw man kind of a look, that including the dialogues, background and scene progression was amazing, almost as if we were watching a different anime altogether. Loved it😘

This scene explain why Naruto cried about the Jiraya's death. For him, Naruto just show his worst side. But Iruka say the opposite. I like to see the sides of Naruto and Shikamaru about their master's death : 1 - Shikamaru thought himself like a coward, but his father knows that's not the truth. Shikamaru is a genius and talented ninja. He never would go without a plan against ninjas well skilled ; 2 - Naruto thought himself like someone who can't prove to his sensei all the potential of his training and nindo way. But Iruka says what Jiraya sensei thought about Naruto. It's important to anyone have a support in times like these. Not to just release stress, angry, fears and sorrows, but to remember we were loved for those who gone forever.

What hurts about this isn't asuma's death It's seeing shikamaru in pain I loved the guy cause I related so much with him and to see him being hurt this much just makes me want to hug him DAMN YOU HIDAN
it was at the time he let it all out that he was able to figure out his legendary strategy to defeat both of them , in fact , he was the perfect combination of a strategic and calm person yet not letting go of that revenge that he alone could obtain , he was able to have a good balance between both sides
This reminds me of my reaction after the death of my mother my father locked me inside my room I stayed for over an hour crying I threw my cell phone on the floor with such force that it broke completely. Shikamaru needs this he was keeping everything inside himself
Shikaku just basically saved Shikamaru's life here. Hadn't he allowed himself to feel his grief completely before going after Kakuzu and Hidan, it would all probably turn into crazy rage only and he would be reckless.

The studio wouldn’t spend money on an expensive director and animation for a filler episode. This episode is canon, as confirmed by Kishimoto himself.
Its not entirely base on filler arc, this scene is base on and connected to Akatsuki Surpression arc. Which is CANON
