Witnessing the first-ever bloom of a corpse flower is such a remarkable event! The San Francisco California Academy of Sciences must be buzzing with excitement. Corpse flowers are known for their incredibly rare blooming cycle, sometimes only flowering once every 7 to 10 years. What makes this event even more intriguing is the scent the flower emits during its peak bloom. Often described as similar to rotting flesh, the odor is nature's clever way of attracting pollinators like carrion beetles and flesh flies that are drawn to decomposing organic material. Despite the off-putting description, the phenomenon attracts crowds of curious and nature-loving individuals eager to experience this unusual natural wonder. It's a fantastic reminder of the diverse and fascinating world of plants!

They have a news story every time one blooms, and it doesn't seem that rare of an occasion given the number of these around the Bay Area.

San Francisco stinks enough without this flower. I don’t need to wait several hours for a rancid smell I can get on the BART platform.

Yes. Actually it has a corm underground. It is edible and taste like potato. I have the smaller one in my garden (different species, same genus).

If it only blooms once every 7-10 years, why does it bloom at all?
