    My first guitar teacher was the first person I met who was a dangerously badass looking dude and an intellectual. As well as being an amazing musician. During my first lesson he said to me, "Minor doesn't have to sound sad, the tritone doesn't have to sound evil, and pop music doesn't have to be liked." That had a major impact on me later in my life when I understood what he meant!
    Also Adam, best video yet!

      I guess one could look at that statement in two ways:
      One - my teacher was referring to me as a listener. I don't have to follow my friends and like the pop music they listen to.
      Two - Pop Music could also mean a style of music. Music that aims to be liked by many. Usually keeping a simple form, expectations, fashionable, and so on.

    I failed badly at learning music theory because there was no context to the course material. It was like trying to learn a foreign language, without ever being told what the words you are learning actually mean. Your channel changes all that.

      @@ReviewPimpUSA Not at all necessary. I've personally found that my learning experience rewards exploration with an instrument a lot when learning theory, and demystifying the process by daring to break out of the usual academic style of learning can yield good results.
      Not to mention that there's an abundance of material covering nearly any relevant topic. Channels like Adam's, Rick Beato, Sideways and 8-bit Music Theory have excellent resources, both well produced and explained.

    Hi Adam, you are a music theorist with an interest in cognitive science and I am a cognitive (neuro)scientist with an interest in music theory - I've been watching everything you publish and I'd like to take this chance to say a huge thanks! I've been meaning to write to you for a while to suggest a tritone video and I like the direction you took it but I thought you would find the scientific literature interesting also. In the late '60s Roger Shepard developed "Shepard tones" composed of ten octave-related harmonics constrained by a Gaussian amplitude envelope (loudest sounds in the middle of the scale). These create a series of cool illusions that might be a great video in their own right such as eternally ascending sounds used by Godspeed you Black Emperor, Pink Floyd and others. It turns out, thanks in the late '80s to Diana Deutsch's research at UCSD that when you play a pair of these back to back which are built on scale degrees a tritone apart people either hear an upward pitch motion or a downward but not both. This is called the tritone paradox and has to do with the brain's process of binding of co-occurring sounds into single sources. I.e. because the sounds all hit us at the same time we perceive there to be only one instrument and we assume all available sounds are a part of the same overtone series (this is in itself a pretty cool branch of acoustic neuroscience).
    Here is Deutsch's website with some examples: philomel.com/mp3/musical_illusions/Tritone_paradox.mp3
    Deutsch continued to expriment and found that each individual hears some tritone-related shepard tone pairs as ascending and some as descending and this is consistent, differs between individuals, is correlated with region, etc. lots of cool stuff. Here's where I come in. In 2011 I was preparing to conduct an EEG neuroscience thesis for my degree at Reed College in Oregon. I had been looking into the literature on bistable images (like the necker cube, a wire-frame cube which can be seen as having either of two faces as the front) and wondered whether there was such a thing as a bistable sound. I found the tritone paradox and with a little modification I was able to adapt it for EEG. The neuroscience research on bistable images is extensive but to my knowledge this was the first attempt on the auditory system. We found exactly what we were hoping for, signals which were analogous to the visual signals with slightly different scalp distributions, and we proved that the tritone paradox is a true bisatable sound along the way.
    Why is this relevent to your devil theme? Well to do the experiment I put 20 of my friends into a dark, low-ceiling, faraday cage of a room and played each of them the tritone paradox 300+ times while they stared for hours at a white + sign on a black computer screen. Not fun.
    The work was later expanded, refined and published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. You can check it out here;
    graydavidson.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Davidson-Pitts-EEG-Neuroscience-Bistable.pdf
    Thanks for taking the time to read this and feel free to contact me if you're ever in need of some deeper neuroscience type research!

      I heard something about satan being the angel of music in heaven before his fall and being cast out. Can't seem to find any scripture in the Bible that supports this. Some reference in Ezekiel but it is not clear to me. I also read elsewhere in a online discussion about this that no where in the Bible does it say that satan was the angel of music but rather mention of this is fiction and from John Milton's Paradise Lost.
      I realize that there are no Christian musical instruments only the person playing the instrument that can make music Christian (serving to glorify God and build up the body of Christ). Music is indeed very powerful, and in the wrong hands can have dangerous influences over people.
      What does the Bible say about satan being the angel of music and about good/bad music in general?

      Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
      Tabrets are some type of musical instrument. Satan also had pipes inside him and before he sinned when he spoke he actually sang the words.

    This was really good and well researched! As a guitarist I always heard the tritone was “banned” in Medieval times too. Damn, they lied to me - fake news! Thanks for your excellent presentation of the topic, I learned a lot! Never realized the “blue note” in the blues scale (which is the basis of blues / rock / pop guitar) creates a 7:5 tritone - the guitar geek in me finds that fascinating. That explains the dissonant, but not too dissonant, unresolved quality of the blue note.

    • @serpentswyrls
      @serpentswyrls 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's true because the prati madhyama to shadja relation is a just major second (9/8) and a just major third (5/4), which gives a total of 45/32 - a harmonic ratio easily and joyfully deciphered by our brain. BTW Perotin's (or Machaut's) tritone should have been pyphagorean, much more dissonant (even the pyphagorean major third with the ratio of 81/64 was actually more dissonant than the Indian augmented fourth, that's why the third was not very widely used before Dufay). The tuning system is crucial indeed, and the tritone is one of the victims most hurt by the twelve-tone equal temperament.

    The thing about tritones in Renaissance counterpoint is not it was banned for being "evil", indeed, but because in the diatonic modal system it shouldn't be supposed to exist. There is no such thing as augmented intervals on the period, and the tritone is an augmented interval that >was part of the modes

      Alternatively - and independently of any actual history - if you build scales by 'stacking fifths' (embedded within a twelve note system), you reach the Lydian mode of the diatonic (FCGDAEB - rearranged to FGABCDE, or CDEFGAB if you want the Ionian, 'major' mode) which includes an FB tritone. This is via the two preceding pentatonic (FCGDA - reordered to FGACD) and hexatonic (FCGDAE - reordered as FGACDE), neither of which contain tritones between any pairs of their notes (all their modes are consequently tritone-free). It is only when you introduce (or jam) a seventh note into a scaled octave that the scale becomes too 'crowded' to avoid introducing a tritone. But, as I say, this is just maths and nothing to do with actual history :)

    • @camtaylormusic
      @camtaylormusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Even without embedding it in a twelve note system - this this works in any tuning of stacked fifths, as long as there are more than six notes. The fifth-chain F-C-G-D-A-E-B is well defined with fifth sizes anywhere between 4\7 and 3\5 octave (roughly 686c and 720c).
      The augmented fourth gets bigger (and the diminished fifth smaller) as your fifths get bigger, so at 4\7, A4=P4, d5=P5 and at 3\5, A4=P5, P4=d5, and in between that, you have P4

    Adam, I saw the whole video and I would like to say: Olivier Messiaen was a composer who used all the time tritones and he used the tritone...to praise God!. I also think about Igor Stravinsky. Or even Mahavishnu Orchestra. Also it depends on context. I remember one musical exercise 16 years ago my private musical teacher taught me: a musical dictation. She played D minor natural scale notes and in some point she played a tritone. At that time it sounded weird to me. But years later, for example, in an octatonic scale, a lydian scale, etc, tritones sound great!

    Also "Devil" means "Slanderer". I wonder if the original meaning of "diobolus en musica" is lost on us, since western culture if the last 500 years or so immediately associates "Devil" with a red, spear-tailed satyr, and also "the devil in music" to mean "THE Devil". Does capitalization of proper nouns not matter in Latin? If it does, then "diobolus" could merely have the meaning of "annoying to implement and wild-sounding".

    Hey Adam! Love your work, man. 'Been watching and commenting for quite some time now... Hope this will manage to get to Q&A!
    How about the Greek origin of the word? "dia" is the prefix for "mean" and "diabulus" is the word for "arithmetic mean". I don't remember if this is from Plato or Archimedes, but I think the latter. The tritone is the arithmetic mean, perfect, of an octave. Thus, "diabulus" in music. I know this was much before tonality and even tempered tuning, but could be linked to the origin of the tritone. Any comments on this?
    Sorry if I'm not very clear, English is not my native language, I wish I could explain this better!

    I use the tritone A LOT in the lydian mode. In my music, I usually start in the lydian mode and end in the lydian mode. It's very common actually and sounds pretty emotional and chill. I believe that the tritone used in the context of a lydian mode doesn't sound so dissonant, it sounds really special, but definitely not agressive or devilish. Demonstration: C minor 11, Db minor 11, Eb minor 11, F minor 11, G minor 11, Ab maj 11# (building all these chords using thirds and ascending fast). This Ab maj 11# sounds really relaxing. Btw.. I'm not proving a point, I'm just answering the final question he does in the video: "What would you do with the tritone?", that I interpreted as "What do you do with the tritone", because in my case I actually use it.

      this progression is very sweet!! thank you! Following the same line, you can add an A minor 11 after the Ab maj #11, but if different timing of course and then a D7,9,#11 (with this voicing). It sounds so deep and passionate! Try that. Ah, and this D dominant with #11 can lead you to any place in this earth.

    • @MaemiNoYume

      the missing third in this chord makes it so interesting, because the ear will fill it with a major third (at least my ear), but there's no F# in A minor 11 or in Ab major #11. I know that it's common for the ear to fill in with missing notes, but it's not such a functional harmony. There's no function from C minor 11 until A minor 11 and then this D suddenly is a dominant, suddenly functional (?). This chord with the major third has two tritone and hence more possibilities. But the #11 feels stronger anyway. I have found a beautiful place after this chord. Keeping the voicing of the #11 there, go to Db maj 7, now you can either be in Db ionian ou Db lydian, both are pretty chill.
