    This brings a couple tears to my eye because of all the emotions and memories Ken Griffey Jr. gave me as a child. I would watch every game I could just to see what Jr. was going to do next! Such an athlete and a treasure to Seattle forever.

    Ken Griffey Jr was and still is the Michael Jordan of baseball in my opinion.

      How do you figure? The guy never won anything. Mariano or Jeter are closer to Michael than anything.

      Both of who you just said played for the Yankees or as many know it now as the evil empire. For the past 20 or 25 years the Yankees have acted like celebrities. Almost every player in that time frame acted more like a celebrity and played for the paycheck. It isn't only the Yankees either. In my opinion it's the teams in baseball who almost always make the postseason every season or every other season that just make baseball less and less worth watching. The Yankees aren't the only team either. Look at the Cardinals or the Dodgers. I'm a lifelong Pirates fan but I also favor the other teams who overcome adversity too. I'm not bashing you or any other Yankees fan out there but players like Griffey simply played for the love of the game.

    Took a look at my signed KGJ ball, on the shelf, this afternoon, which I acquired during the heart of his career, nearly 18 years ago, and was flooded with great baseball memories. And now I find myself here, watching his best highlights. It's actually upsetting that I won't be able to see him play anymore. But at the same time, I feel privileged to have witnessed this guy during his prime.
    He had the best swing in baseball, and was arguably the best all-around (CLEAN) player I have ever seen. Watching videos like this, actually chokes me up a bit. Will I ever see such talent grace this sport again? I'm not sure...
    It's a shame injuries cut his career short, but such is the game of baseball, when you play it CLEAN and FAIR. JR. excelled during a time when, the competition had to juice to just to TRY and keep up. But he stayed clean through it all. Fantastic career JR. I just wish I could still watch you play.

    I am please that I got to see his entire career. Thank you for all the memories Ken, you inspired me to play this game, and play it with 100% effort. From the first time you put on a uniform to the last time you were great. First ballot HOF, and would have been the home run champ if it wasn't for injuries and that 94 strike season. I will show my Son your highlights when he is old enough to understand how great you were for Seattle and Cincy.

    I have never thought in my life that this day would come. To see him get inducted into the hallowed Halls of Cooperstown. I'm a Seattle born and bred native and have never been any luckier and humble to see this man play. It seems like yesterday that I watched him in his prime and scoring the winning run in game 5 of the ALDS against the Yankees. Congratulations Ken! You absolutley and without a doubt the greatest I have ever seen play the game and most importantly you played it the RIGHT WAY! Congrats on baseball's most ultimate honor!! :)

    I'll admit I cried. Bonds may be the home run king, but it was always Griffey's league.

    • @scottb3034
      @scottb3034 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tyler Harkner No, he may not be the homerun king but he had 400 legitimate home runs and if you took away 50% of his home runs after 2000 he'd still have 550-600. Griffey if he was healthy was better though.
      McGwire or Canseco are the bigger cheats than Bonds, they did it their entire careers.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott B I do think Bonds was the better hitter, but never thought Barry was a great outfielder. Barry was too cocky to be the best outfielder ever, even though he had more talent to play outfield than Griffey probably. Bonds was faster, probably had a better throwing arm, and yet he still was not better as an outfielder.

    As a lifetime Dodger fan, I've always respected many Dodgers but there are also many players whom I respected who didn't wear Dodger blue at all. This man, I've come to respect him as one of the best hitters of all time. Griffey never used steroids or PEDs in an era when many players used it and got "better" while Griffey did it old school. Love his style of play. If the injuries didn't slow him down, we would be talking about the home run king because he had the power and seemed to hit a home run whenever he wanted.

    • @jonathankaplan5504
      @jonathankaplan5504 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, no way you can't love someone who doesn't play for your team. My whole life I've been a Mets (and Dodgers) fan, yet my favorite player is Griffey Jr. Class act and possibly the best athlete to ever live.

    • @TheBigMan920
      @TheBigMan920 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahahaha Griffey never used PED's that's laughable. That's why he couldn't stay healthy in the latter part of his career. Wake up, brotha.

    • @TheBigMan920
      @TheBigMan920 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In all seriousness though, he would have been the greatest of all time if not for said injuries. He's definitely top 5 in my favorite players of all time. Him, Pujols, Miggy, A-Rod, and any player that plays or played for the Marlins :)

    • @jonathankaplan5504
      @jonathankaplan5504 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kal El Batson Definitely. In fact, I still consider him one of (if not the) the greatest of all time, regardless of the fact that he was injured so much.

    • @PhunnyMunny
      @PhunnyMunny 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kal El Batson dude, you're smoking crack if you think griffey was ever into steroids. That's why he took forever to heal and in fact, why he didn't fully heal to begin with. He didn't need to take steroids to generate power, just take a look at his swing. Him swinging a bat might be the most perfectly harmonious act in all of sports history

    I was too young and stupid in the late 80's & 90's to realize what I was realizing was history in the making. I was just a young kid excited to watch a guy who seems to hit homeruns every night and make every catch that no one else can. Well, in retrospect, I have not seen anyone even resembling Griffey in the last 14 years here in Seattle.. and frankly, this team has gone down hill since he departed. 2001 season doesn't count because they didn't even make the Series. Thanks for this video!

    Griffey Jr is the greatest baseball player in my lifetime 32 years. I modeled my swing after him in little league, me also being a left handed hitter. In an era that wil be remembered as the steroid era. He did it without roids. If it wasn't for the injuries he probably have at least 100 more HRs then Aaron and Ruth.

      Man fuck the Yankees you know what I'm sayin lol! Don't forget the M's legendary pitching staff with a young Randy Johnson and young Jamie Moyer. Man I feel ya all the way I've been a Mariners fan since I was 5 (I'm 19 now) and the one thing I can not understand about my team is how do the M's win 116 games and not even get close to the World Series lo!?!?

    • @vnmenme3692
      @vnmenme3692 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrBerg4ever 9/11 happened and they had ten days off, Baseball they play daily and a break that long tends to break the groove. They would have won 120 games and the world series had not 9/11 occurred.
      Don't forget in the nineties they had Jay Buhner who hit 40+ homeruns 3 straight years and had a cannon of an arm in right field. they also had tino Martinez who was a 25-30 home run guy who played gold glove first base. The problem with those 1990's teams was the bull pen and even the starters once you got past The big Unit.
      The Mariners of the 90;s set all kinds of Homerun records, and won the majority of their games 8-7 or 9-6, the bullpen blew many many wins.

      Brian L You see alot of hitters now in baseball that copied his swing. Ryan Howard is the one that first comes to mind. Not so much the swing as much as the follow through after contact. Left handed HR hitters naturally have an uppercut follow through though.

Both kids born into the game that both took an opportunity for the best i just wish he could have gotten a ring. Still my fave to ever play the game or watch...i dont think ive ever seen anyone play baseball and look aesthetically pleasing as Griffey. His swing is also the greatest in baseball history. He has absolutely zero body movement. Kobe and Griffey jr. born and bred with the pedigree to accomplish greatness on the court and field.

      +BigHern58 OK, sorry--I've got to call you out for being wrong. He's never had more than 24 steals in a season. Why would you ever make a claim like that if you don't know it's true. And what makes it even worse is that you told another person to "go check the stats," which obviously you didn't do yourself. This leaves me with the conclusion that you are not a very bright guy. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that you're one of the dumbest human beings I've ever come across in my life. Congrats.

    I almost feel bad for my son that he didn't get to witness ken griffey Jr.s era. But I am grateful that I did experience it. He was awesome. He had the best swing ever.

    As a lifelong Pirates fan, if I had to choose an American league team to support to go all the way to win, most would say the Indians or the Blue Jays but when I was little I always liked watching Mariners games because of Griffey. I hope to see one or both in the world series in the next five year. The Pirates are my hometown team and the Mariners has a handful of players (minus Leyland and Bonds) from the Pirates mini-dynasty of the early 1990s. Ken Griffey Jr. was the Michael Jordan of baseball during the 90s, he played hard, played on the team with his father, hit 630 homeruns, played baseball for the love of the game, won the homerun derby three times, highly doubt he ever took steroids, and was elected into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame.

    His swing was so smooth and effortless. No big leg kick not a lot of movement. He was always the coolest guy on the field. I feel cheated however by the injuries he suffered. It's crazy a guy who will walk in the HOF with 630 hrs, 2700+ hits and we all wonder what might've been.

    The Kid with that sweet sweet swing of his with defense of his while patrolling the outfield. He was definitely my favorite player growing up. What could have been if he never got hurt while playing for the Reds. Nonetheless he had an outstanding MLB career.

    In terms of raw ability, probably the greatest player since Willie Mays. Incredible range, great speed, perfect hitting technique, unbelievable work ethic. Without injuries, we'd be saying he was the greatest ever.

    As a Pirates fan, I love the fact that the Mariners of today have Lloyd McClendon as manager and Andy Van Slyke as a first base coach. I just wish they had Griffey as their hitting coach. Unlike most of the all time home run leaders of today Griffey did not use steroids. The Mariners are the one team more than any other American League team that deserve a AL pennant and to witness the Mariners and the Pirates in a World Series would be a dream come true for me. It may seem unlikely but nothing is impossible.
