The logic and reasoning behind turning the valve clockwise or only one direction is that over time, the rotation and compression of the handle hinge point kinda "slides" along the spider gasket each time it's moved. Eventually, the likelihood that it will pinch is very high, although not guaranteed to happen. Rotating only one direction eliminates that chance. Variable speed pumps are extremely beneficial for energy savings, to the effect of paying for themselves in 3 years or less. That statement is made assuming one pays for their own pump, not a pool guy's markup, and installing it themselves. I installed a VS CaliMar 1.5HP pump in place of a single speed Hayward 1.5HP Superpump and saved almost $160.00 a month on electricity. I ran both 24 hrs a day. CaliMar pumps are significantly cheaper than Hayward, Jandy, Pentair, Speck, etc...and they carry the same warranty period. In 2020, I paid less than $650.00 for the ours.

@@Sharkie626 Yeah, I watched a video of one of these things pulled apart. It's like a clutch, pushing on the handle it lifts the valve cone/deflector from the spider gasket and you rotate it. The only valve like device I know of that you rotate one way is a rotary lamp or fan switch as well as pullchain lamp and fan switches.
My exact same setup is ready to rebuild. Old sand is out. New bulkheads and new multiport are ready ... but reassembly has me stumped. One cut? Just one? That does not look possible. I am afraid of having a leaking bulkhead (after I add sand) and/or the last PVC pipe will have an interference fit. I am not sure what to screw or what to glue ... and in what order.
Yeah it was one cut. Was possible, but not the easiest. The valve attaches to the filter tank itself by unions. Everything else is cemented. I unfortunately don't know the steps involved though.

It's probably been standard for many years, and once a standard is in place, it generally stays in place. The "lie" was just that, a total lie, his hopes were that you'd believe it and he'd make a decent coin by deceiving you. That's his job. Your job is to not fall for it, which is exactly what you did. Nope. I didn't want him to sell me anything. I had just told him that I was planning on replacing it. It wasn't just the gasket, the valve was 20 years old and becoming near impossible to turn anymore. Got a new one right from Amazon.

It's useful incase the multiport valve gasket becomes faulty, and prevents water from going through the waste pipe, causing the pool to lose water.

I've never heard of that. We turned the old one both ways for years, never a problem.

I will definitely buy the valve. One question, is your pump on/off? mine has that speed and the truth is a headache it never configures correctly

Why not just install an insert? Just need to remove 10 screws, replace the spider gasket, and you're done. Saves money.
That would have been a special order and the entire assembly was worn out as it is, the inside included.

the gasket is what makes it near impossible to turn, not the 20 years on the valve
Do you mean the spider gasket? That was replaced 8 years ago at the time of this video.
