    There are demos that show off HAM8 in real-time animations, and it is jaw-dropping - "Tint" by The Black Lotus is probably the most famous example.

    I had an Amiga 500 in 1993 and a year later a genuine Commodore Amiga 1200 with 2 meg of ram and Philips colour monitor, I did a lot of artwork in Deluxe Paint 4. I was amazed by Colonto's Personal Paint AGA photo image capabilities at the time, but I used Image FX 1.5 in HAM8 for doing photoshop like effects. Photogenics which came later was really next gen with natural painting effects. Maxon's Cinema 4D 2 was pretty amazing with the 3D rendered glass models that didn't take days to render. Today I use a genuine Cinema 4D R11.5XL which I spent a lot of money upgrading over the years and a bought version of Photoshop 6. The Amiga was an amazing machine with so much potential. Besides the graphics stuff, it became my main music production machine which I use with Octamed sound tracker and external midi keyboards. My Amiga 1200 lives up in the loft still to this day.

      @TheGuruMeditation  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome Shyhawk! Thanks for the great comment. Deluxe Paint and ADPro were the programs I used most back then, but I am interested in doing more Photoshop like effects for a few projects I have coming up (like copying and pasting pixels - healing brush) so I will check out Image FX. So cool that you still use Cinema 4D and it started on the Amiga. I really believe the Amiga was the first home computer for artists - both visual and music. Thanks again for sharing your story with us. All the best! -- Bill

    I remember back in the days putting photos underneath the DigiView camera and having to turn each of the color wheels to scan a photo into the Amiga. Kinda tedious but had some pretty good results, especially for its time. HAM mode was pretty good for colors but the resolution was not the best.

    • @TheGuruMeditation

      Oh yeah those were great times. We actually did a DigiView video, but I was using the DigiDroid to turn the color wheel.

      @@TheGuruMeditation Yah didn't have one of those did it all by hand but hey it was still fun do be able to do that back then. A lot of computers were not as affordable and could do a lot of digital imaging as the Amigas did. I always wish I had the Video Toaster add on but could not afford it. I loved watching the demo discs for it though.

    Long ago I did try convert many jpegs to amiga HAM6 and HAM8 modes, and to 4-8 bps pictures with OCS and AGA palletes. After trying of couple PC image programs, viewers, converters etc, I found that Photogenics running via Winuae was best choice at all aspects.

    Using Fusion or ShapeShifter mac emulation, you can run PhotoShop v3 on your Amiga. The PhotoShop IFF saver doesn't always work well and I don't recommend using it. I always preferred using ImageFX over ADPro, or even ImageMasterRT over ADPro.
    Beyond the basic HAM6 & HAM8 modes, you should do a follow-up episode on sliced HAM and dynamic HiRes types screenmodes that do palette changes for every screenline to give even more impressive displays.

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. It would be cool to keep it an all-Amiga workflow with MAC emulation. A Dynamic hi-res follow up would be great. Right now I am editing an episode about Digi-view so stay tuned!

      I prefer German Hefe Weissbier. Really tasty! :-) Thanks for the link. I will look into that. Just bought the new ACA500+ from Individual Computers for my A500+ Does the A500 also have the HAM mode? Can't remember anymore, but I remember that the first time I saw some graphics on the A500 I was amazed how advanced the Amiga was compared to a PC at that time. Amiga had already a multitasking OS and the PC only DOS (single task OS).

    • @TheGuruMeditation

      NiekkieNick
      Oh yea, German Hefe Weissbier is awesome! I drink a lot of IPA here in New York. I love hops! The ACA500+ is great! Congrats! You will love it. Yes, the A500 does HAM mode and Dynamic hi-res. HAM mode has been available on every Amiga since the original A1000. It evolved into HAM8 AGA mode. Amiga was so far ahead of it's time when the A1000 came out. 4,096 colors on the screen at one time absolutely destroyed every other computer. I feel like it would almost be like a home computer with a holographic monitor and OS coming out today!

    12:47 - With you guys all the way with that thought. I've known for a long time that Photo Shop can deal with IFFs, but it really sucks the immersion away from me if I have to spend all of my time on a modern machine dealing with stuff I want on the Amiga.

    • @Shot97
      @Shot97 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      16:43 - The difficult part for me with transferring my pics to the Amiga is converting the often times quite strange resolutions the Amiga offered. The easiest way I've found is to just crop them all into a 4:3 resolution on a modern PC, and then resize them to say 320x200. Now 320x200 is a technical wide resolution, but always displayed on NTSC Amiga's in 4:3 - So by stretching say a 800x600 image into 320x200 what you would end up with on the Amiga is an image with the correct aspect ratio intact.
      If I just put say a 3:2 image or a 16:9 image and dropped it down to the 320x200 it would appear distorted on the Amiga as it forced the wide image into a 4:3 display. This is what causes me the greatest distress. I don't like dealing with the math involved in order to preserve my original photos wide aspect ratios. I believe I've done it before by letterboxing. Put the 3:2 35mm pic or 16:9 pick inside of a 800x600 canvas, and then force it into 320x200, and then it will show in the original 3:2 or 16:9 aspect when it's on the Amiga. For the most part though I've just cropped them all into 4:3 on a modern computer so I can fill up that Amiga screen and not have any distortions.
      I've never bothered with overscan because I haven't yet wrapped my head around the math. You did not appear to have cropped the image into 4:3 at any point, yet it showed up without distortion in 4:3 - This confuses me as I figured it would come out distorted, but it was almost like it got an automatic crop, as some of the skyline is missing on the Amiga. I'll have to play around with some overscan modes and give it a try. That final picture when dithered down looked brilliant on the Amiga! I'm usually not a fan of dithering so I didn't even try that when I was messing around with AdPro, but I can see it did an amazing job here. Great video you two!

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Shot! Goto 9:54 . This is not a great example because the aspect ratio of the original image is almost identical to the aspect ratio of the Amiga's resolution, but what I do is make the longest edge of my photo fit in your target size for the Amiga. Then I extend the canvas with empty black to match the short end of the Amiga resolution. This will guarantee preserving the correct aspect ratio. I never want to crop my images when I bring them to Amiga because I am very particular about the composition and they have already been shot and cropped a very specific way. Overscan is really designed for video applications so your Amiga graphics will extend past the bezel of your CRT monitor. But, on today's flat panels you can use overscan to maximize your resolution on the Amiga side.

    Hi Fellas! Love this guide, with the help of a fellow Amiga friend I've been trying this out in WinUAE!
    I have a MiSTer and a real A500+, but I'm experimenting with DPaint on WinUAE so that I can use a wacom tablet to draw with - it's great!
    One question though: I can only get this to work on the lower res settings. As soon as I go to 640x XXX, I get an ADPro error that says "The selected depth is not available on your machine". I noticed you were using an AGA Machine so I've tried several configs.
    This happens with A1200 and even with A4000 config... is there a setting I'm missing to get the higher res HAM modes to stick? I've not yet tried this on MiSTer AGA mode, but will shortly!

    Oooohhhh...that Black Belt HAM-E box gave me flashbacks of both the delight and nightmare that HAM-E could provide. It worked really well for images but the included paint software was frustrating and terrible. I was so happy when AGA computers came out as it refined the concept and made it work seamlessly with everything, including copies of DeluxePaint that supported it from version IV onwards.
    If at all possible, you should cover a bit of the software that rendered to HAM mode. DigiPaint III, SpectraColor (or Photon Paint as they were basically the same software) and Electronic Arts Deluxe Photolab could do some amazing things in HAM mode, as long as you could deal with the fringing. Photolab even felt like a proto-version of Photoshop since it preceeded it and offered such advanced features as feathering edges and compositing. SpectraColor offered interesting 3D manipulations (mapping images on the side of cubes for instance) but DigiPaint III was perhaps the best as it offered many of the same features but worked in 24 bit before rendering to HAM mode, which improved the final result dramatically.
    Great memories and very exciting to see how well your photos rendered out to HAM mode using ADPRO. Thanks guys for another awesome show!

      Oh wow, thanks for the insight Pierre! I wasn't aware that DigiPaint II worked that way. That's cool. Would love to do some videos about these pieces of software. But you are much better with the painting than either of us. Maybe we can have a special guest? :-) -- Bill

    Love it! Gotta say, my understanding is that HAM mode was only available in low res (70ns, 320x, more with overscan) screen modes on OCS and ECS, although interlaced screens were an option. I just checked on my A600, and DPaint IV only gave me the options of 320x256 and 320x512 (both PAL, obviously).
    Also, while the number given for HAM8 is the same one Commodore used to give, my understanding is that HAM8 could theoretically show more than 262,144 colours, but the real limitation was that even on an overscanned super-highres laced PAL screen, you'd run out of pixels long before you'd run out of colours to display - heck even a 1920x1080 screen only has 2,073,600 pixels to display, well short of the 16,777,216 colours in the 24-bit palette (and yes, some of those would be black, so the real number is less). There is an interesting discussion about this on the EAB forum: eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=84516

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank Troy! Glad you like the video and thanks for the comment! Yes, I believe the max resolution of an OCS Amiga in HAM was 360x576. In retrospect perhaps I should have stuck to the original resolutions because someone else mentioned that as well, but my thinking was to use the higher resolution available on the A1200 but keep the 4,096 colors because I knew the image would be up-scaled to 1920x1080 for TH-cam so I wanted to minimize the amount of scaling. I mention that at 5:58 but perhaps I should have been more clear or just stuck with the native OCS resolutions. Oh well, it is still a fun experiment and I will see how the lower resolutions up-scale to 1920x1080. I briefly did that at VCF East and the quality was really poor a not not a good representation of what you see with your eyes on the CRT monitor even in the OCS resolutions. I will check out that thread on EAB thanks. Yes I believe you could have more then the 262,144 colors but I am not familiar with that technique. Ironically if you look at 3:52 Anthony opened the manual to the page that shows HAM8 being able to display a max of 262,144, LOL. Maybe he should play the lottery! Thanks again for watching and the link to that discussion! -- Bill

      Ah yeah, I probably should have. You know, I always struggle with the length of the videos. I don't want to make them too long for the average person, but someone like you who is very interested in the subject would benefit from more detail. It is a challenging balance. I decided to only show the dithering in the Lublin Sunset because the banding is more apparent in that one, but I agree it would have been nice to see both. The good news is that you can see the NYC sunset with Floyd dithering in the folder I made: goo.gl/yfOzm2 I will also make a AGA HAM8 version of the photos based on some other viewer's comments. By the way, Digital Creations' DCTV (which came with the fantastic DCTV Paint) used an even more clever method of storing 21 bits of video data into 4 or 6 bits. When I first saw the DigiView pictures I was already used to 24bit images so I thought they were garbage and I thought it was just a toy computer trying to punch above its weight. I am even more convinced of that now I know those HAM6 images are basically useless.
    Also: Typical of Amiga fans a lot of this "Unlike on other computers" comes from people who clearly don't know how other computers work: The three letter file extension talk is garbage. The three letter file extension serves as nothing but an organising label for file managers. In most even remotely well written apps they use the header contents for validation testing, not the three letter extension.
    "I had a Mimetics frame bufffer which allowed for /basically/ 24bit images to be displayed". Which Mimetics frame buffer? Is there more than one? The only Mimetics frame buffer I know of can only display 21bit colour. That's what you mean by "basically" 24bit, isn't it? What you mean by "which allowed for /basically/ 24bit images to be displayed" is "but it did not allow 24bit images to be displayed". Go on, Amiga fan base, start telling the truth for the first time in your lives.
    "A 320x200 getting blown up to 1920x080 which this video is gong to be in is really going to give you a massive amount of artefacts". Yeah.... in other words, what it is going to do is reveal what HAM6 *really* looked like and you don't want other people to have the same disappointing experience I had so you're showing what could NOT be done on an Amiga for the first 7 years of its life, and by the time it could do what you're showing there were plenty of better graphics cards for the PC.
    "I'm going to use a Mac...", because even the Amiga fan accepts they'd be a fool to try picture editing for the Amiga actually using the Amiga, this alleged graphics superpower.
    "That's a hard image for HAM...". No it isn't. It's mostly smooth graduations of almost primary colours. It's approaching the easiest kind of picture for HAM to emulate. What you want for a real test is a very noisy reference image with lots of very different colours grouped as closely together as possible in the x direction. That's what HAM can't do: High density colour images.

  • @JustWasted3HoursHere
    @JustWasted3HoursHere 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The wikipedia description of HAM mode goes like this:
    &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
    HAM6 encoding uses six bits per pixel: two bits for control and four bits for data. If the two control bits are both set to zero, the four remaining bits are used to index one of the 16 preset color registers, operating in the fashion of a normal indexed bitmap. The other three possible control bit patterns indicate that the color of the previous pixel (to the left) on the scanline should be used and the data bits should instead be used to modify the value of the red, green or blue component. Consequently, there are four possibilities:
    Set: Use the 4 bits of data to index a color from the 16 color palette. Use that color for this pixel.
    Modify Red: Hold the green and blue color components of the previous pixel. Use the 4 bits of data as the new red color component of this pixel.
    Modify Green: Hold the red and blue color components of the previous pixel. Use the 4 bits of data as the new green color component of this pixel.
    Modify Blue: Hold the red and green color components of the previous pixel. Use the 4 bits of data as the new blue color component of this pixel.
    &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
    There was also a HAM8 mode on AGA Amigas and a third party HAM-E by Blackbelt Systems that was similar to HAM8, but at low resolution (AGA HAM8 can use any horizontal resolution, including 1280).
    Another variation was "sliced HAM" (you can't make this stuff up...) or SHAM, where the palette could be changed on every vertical line. This added more freedom to where you could put colors, but was more system hungry. I remember being blown away by pictures displayed in this mode. HAM8 made this mode obsolete.
    The "fringing" you speak of can be greatly reduced or even eliminated with very careful palette selection and pixel data. (There were programs back then that could analyze your HAM image and reorganize it for this purpose).

Commodore 64, Sinclair Spectrum, Atari STs and so on have lots of support from their devoted fans. Some of the FPGA hardware out there is really fascinating (and not that expensive, either!), including a 200+ mhz 68060 accelerator for the A600 (I think it's called Vampire).

    Why extend the canvas by one pixel rather than just rescale the image to the 724? Did you also save as lossless JPEG because otherwise you are added additional artefacts into the image which the HAM mode has to render.

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey James! Thanks for watching and the comment. I extended the canvas because if I made the width of the image 724 then the height would be 483 which would exceeded the maximum resolution of 482. Again, one line of resolution is probably imperceptible, but with an image of a different aspect ratio I would want to keep the 482 to maximize my resolution because I still have a lot more resolution in the width to play with. For example, if the image was 16:9 aspect ratio and I set the width to 724 then my height would be 407 and I wouldn't have the max resolution available to me. Instead I would set the height to 482 (the max) and my width would be 857 which fits in Super-High Res Laced Extreme Size 1448x482. When I made the JPG I set it to the lowest compression of 12. Is there such a thing as an uncompressed JPG? I never heard of that. I make uncompressed TIFF and PNG files all the time from my Camera RAW files, but I never heard of an uncompressed JPG. Thanks again for watching and commenting. I hope I was able to explain the method of my madness! Best, -- Bill

      @TheGuruMeditation  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neat. Thanks for the info about Lossless. I doubt ADPro can accept an image with that compression, but worth a try. Although one could argue that regular JPG at 12 (Max) compression is pretty darn good.

      Actually you want minimum compression (larger file) to be as near lossless as possible and therefore less JPEG artefacts ;-)

    Easy to follow! Here is what happens if you use Photoshop and then Personal Paint 7.2!

    Hi Guys. Its hard for me to write this because you are doing the great job, but i had to say it because your inaccuracy could mess in people head. Original Amiga chipset OCS, could display HAM mode only in Low resolution 320 (352 overscan) while the vertical could be 512 in PAL(or 576 overscan) or 400 in NTSC. You have used HAM6 mode on AGA so while you could display 640x480 HAM6 image in reality NOBODY would be interested in using that mode if for 2 bitplanes more you could actually have so much more . This makes the whole video purelly artificial and could convince newbie that amiga actually could do something which in reality it cant. Conversion to HAM6 mode is actually very difficult proces, because first you need to convert resolution to 320x480 then convert RGB24 to RGB12 then apply HAM compression. Each of those steps makes a difference and if you would do it wrongly the final effect will not be as good as it could be. It is also worth to mension that in low resolution mode the noise caused by dithering is much more visible making the whole process even more difficult and FS is not a best option here. Me and my friend are researching this topic in order to create the best ham converter (and recently also Dynamic Hires) and i can tell you it is very difficult. We also started to research Dynamic Hires which in fact allows you to display 640x480 picture on standard OCS machine and i posted some pictures here .www.imagebam.com/image/e4e1b9516025848 In Dynamic Hires picture contains 504 colours (843 in lowres HAM6) but only 16 in each line, while Lublin has 263 (725 in lowres HAM6) and also only 16 in each line. However you can see that Dynamic Hires blows away HAM6 picture thanx to higher resolution.

      Hi Trachu. Thanks for the comment and the kind words. Yes I am aware that OCS does HAM in up to 360x576. In retrospect I probably should have stuck to those resolutions, but if you watch the video at 5:58 I explain that I am cheating and using higher resolutions because of the 1920x1080 upscale and conversion to mp4. I did have Dynamic HiRes in mind when doing this because I used to use that mode with DigiView all the time. I will never forget NewTek Demo Reel 3 with this announcement and image: th-cam.com/video/DybXc-WEf6Y/w-d-xo.htmlm49s My thinking was to use the higher resolution available on the A1200 but keep the 4,096 colors because I knew the image would be up-scaled to 1920x1080 for TH-cam so I wanted to minimize the amount of scaling. I briefly upscaled low-res OCS images to higher resolutions at VCF East and the quality looked poor on modern equipment and I felt that it wasn't a good representation of what you see with your eyes on the CRT monitor even in the OCS resolutions on a real Amiga. I certainly didn't mean to mislead anyone. Perhaps it wasn't the right decision, but I thought it was the best option at the time. It is still 4,096 colors which was my main goal. I will have to go back and experiment with the lower resolutions and see how they look when upscaled to 1920x1080 with mp4 codec. Good luck with your software. It sounds great and thanks for experimenting with the images. That is very cool. Please keep me posted with your progress. My one suggestion is that your software must maintain the original aspect ratio of the image regardless of Amiga screen resolutions. Otherwise it world force the photographer to use additional software and mental calculations to correct the aspect ratio. Obviously distorted images like the 2 you presented in that gallery are not acceptable even though that was a technical demonstration. Thanks again for taking the time to experiment with the images and providing some insight. -- Bill

      352x576 not 360 - Amiga splits horizontal display into 16px chunks, so while you can set any resolution inbetween it will allocate DMA needed to feed nearest mod16 resolution. As for your conversion process, my point is that RGB24to12 conversion done in Lowres is much more difficult because applying nice looking dithering to Lowres is much harder than in Highres. Good portion of your video is praising dithering as the tool to make the banding go away. It is not as easy as you have described it. Basically what you have done is purelly theorethic. In AGA we have HAM8 which when done correctly can display pictures indistingishibles from originals. In terms of aspect ratio - I have included original files (just like you did) so anyone can take them and try to use other display programms to receive ham picture. Turning on interlace make the picture thinner, but it would display correctly on Amiga, that is why HAM6 output is doubled horizontally to mimic how it would look on real Amiga. Yeah, in retrospect I should have just done it in Low Res, but I was concerned about the upscale to 1920x1080. I felt like a low res HAM mage upscaled to higher resolutions on a modern computer look worse than the same low resolution image on a CRT (I am talking about what is perceived by your eye), but I will experiment more with that. I should have just used 320x200 which is what I mostly did back then except for dynamic hi-res. So much for my modern twist, LOL. You should offer the correct max resolution to Wikipedia because it says 360x576 is max for HAM6, but maybe that is ECS?

      Again, I totally feel you with the 24 to 12 bit conversion and dithering in low res, but I was trying to avoid the 5.4x scale to 1080 and all the side effects that come with that and minimize it to 2.2x upscale. I probably should have made low res images for the folder and used the workflow in the video to present the image on TH-cam. But either way converting to 1920x1080 mp4 is a bastardization of the original image anyway. But now you have me wrestling with my decision, lol! Let me know when you have your software up and running. I would love to play with it.
