- Whenever I'm troubled and my spirit is down and needed some uplifting, this beautiful hymn, "It Is Well with My Soul", always always does the job.. I love singing this as it makes me feel loved and peaceful. I hope it does the same for you too. This is my instrumental version with some emphasis on the violin and cello. Feel free to sing along, the lyrics are in the video.
"It Is Well with My Soul" is a cherished Christian hymn with a powerful message of faith and hope in the midst of adversity. The hymn was written by Horatio Gates Spafford, an American lawyer and Presbyterian church elder, in the late 19th century. Spafford penned the lyrics following a series of tragic events in his life.
The story behind the hymn is poignant: In 1871, Spafford's young son died of scarlet fever. Shortly afterward, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed much of Spafford's real estate investments, causing significant financial loss. Despite these hardships, Spafford and his family decided to sail to Europe in 1873 to assist with the relief efforts following the fire.
Tragically, due to a last-minute change of plans, Spafford was delayed and sent his wife, Anna, and their four daughters ahead on the SS Ville du Havre. The ship collided with another vessel and sank in the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in the loss of over 200 lives, including Spafford's four daughters. Anna survived and sent a telegram to her husband with the heartbreaking message, "Saved alone."
Upon receiving the news of his family's tragic fate, Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife in Europe. It was during this journey, as his ship passed near the spot where his daughters had perished, that Spafford found solace and inspiration to write the lyrics to "It Is Well with My Soul."
The hymn's poignant refrain, "It is well, it is well, with my soul," reflects Spafford's profound faith and trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, even in the face of unimaginable loss and sorrow. The lyrics express themes of peace, surrender, and confidence in God's providence, serving as a source of comfort and encouragement to countless individuals enduring trials and tribulations.
The hymn's enduring popularity and widespread use in Christian worship services and gatherings attest to its timeless message of faith and resilience in the midst of suffering. "It Is Well with My Soul" continues to inspire and uplift believers around the world, serving as a reminder of the hope and assurance found in a steadfast trust in God's unfailing love and grace.
MUSIC, entitled “Ville Du Havre” the ship that took Spafford's daughters, was composed by Philip P. Bliss. He first sang this on Nov 24, 1876
