    Growing up with horses I always found it so fascinating that such an easily spooked prey animal, with fierce instincts to flee from danger and chaos, will run to it when man asked him to.

    As someone who rides and hangs with horses everyday, I can tell you that war horses possess extraordinary courage. Instinctively, horses run like hell from loud noises and explosions (they're flight critters). Some 1.5 million horses died in the Civil War. Horses are amazing animals.

      This was one of my best dreams yet. Prince Philip and I were getting ready to leave Buckingham palace but the Queen saw us escaping. Prince Philip had 2 horses and we charged out together, little did he know the Queen was behind in seconds. After charging miles away from Buckingham Palace, Prince Philip honoured me the title of Princess of Edinburgh.

      +Riley Larcombe - It's a matter of energy efficiency. A horse, carrying one man consumes about 10 times the feed that a man does: an overall energy loss. A horse, yoked with something like an Egyptian Chariot yoke can only produce 5 men's worth of work - again an energy loss. A proper horse collar allows the horse to perform as 15 or more men can perform, which is an energy gain. In the cavalry context, this is important because of the logistics tail needed to support horse and trooper. Cavalry units operated on their own only while raiding and scouting, which were relatively quick or short ranged actions. They would otherwise require feed and food, farriers and spares (tack and weapons), extra ropes, tentage, etc. The more efficient the logistics, the more efficient the horse soldier.
      Now Riley, I see that you have learned a couple of new words on your school bus. They aren't generally used in polite company, especially when you don't know who you are talking to. Use them in the wrong context, and you come off sounding like a little twit. If you have any questions about the big words I used, such as "energy" or "logistics", ask your science or history teacher.

      Yes, I hope so. The U.S. Marine Corps has a war memorial next to the grave of a horse. She was in a battle during WWI and traveled often by herself back and forth from the front lines to the rear hauling wounded men, supplies and ammunition. It was like she sensed that what she was doing was critical. She was given a medal and made Sargent with a home and pension for life. When she passed away in later years the memorial was erected next to her grave site. The town in which I now live has a war memorial for the animals who served and died in our wars and not just horses but dogs, mules and others. Very,very cool.

    Waterloo (Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington) was a Russian/Italian movie, produced by Dino de Laurentis and directed by Sergei Bondarchuk (who also directed Warn and Peace). It required over ten thousand conscript troops as extras, dressed in period uniforms and about 2000 horsemen to recreate the cavalry charges.

    Love that scene, 800 horsemen taking Beersheba! People say that because the horses were so thirsty and could smell the water is why they went so fast! I have a different theory, these guys were Australians right! Australians love their beer, ok so far! I was once riding once through a village in the mountains with a group of about 10 people, we had all magnificent, huge horses, and a villager actually stood in his garden, watching us in tears, and he said that he last saw this amount of horses in an actual horse charge in an actual war. I think that the horse charge in itself, when it's not used for war, it's an amazing experience. And what a sound! Horses are truly magnificent, and should never take part in any war again.

    I have famous ancestors, diplomats and military leaders predating the 1400s. Several were generals, one at Waterloo the Napoleonic wars, one was a Welsh rebellion leader and our latest military excursion was a father, a Lancaster pilot over Europe in World War 2. I can understand the comradery and united friendship and blended skill between man and horse on the battlefield.

    Superb film :) Inspiring, thrilling, heart-breaking. :)

    There have been and are, many wondrous and magnificent sights in this world, but, in all the world there is no more magnificent sight, no more inspiring imagery than to watch the fire and courage of the war horse in full charge, when his blood is up, and he carries 'his' warrior into battle,, he smells it, he hears it, he sees it,, he feels it in his blood,, and yet, he charges without fear or hesitation,,,,if, there is, a more inspiring or more magnificent image in all the world, Show it to me,, I dare you,,,

    Have you given the horse its strength or clothed its neck with a flowing mane? Did you give it the ability to leap forward like a locust. Its majestic snorting is something to hear! It paws the earth and rejoices in its strength. When it charges to war, it is unafraid. It does not run from the sword. The arrows rattle against it, and the spear and javelin flash. Fiercely it paws the ground and rushes forward into battle when the trumpet blows. It snorts at the sound of the bugle. It senses the battle even at a distance. It quivers at the noise of battle and the shout of the captain's commands.

    Better yet...may our greed never put us in tanks, planes and other such machinery, to wage war against each other again. The horse is the most fearless of beasts, it charges into battle without consideration to consequences. To the contrary, men know the danger of warfare yet they press on to the grave, so who's the greater fool, the horse or its rider?

    • @starhunterterra9849
      @starhunterterra9849 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The horse lives to run and be useful, humans however are more flawed. Since they recklessly rush into battle for too often more than sometimes reasons not worth fighting for. Specially when peaceful options are available to avoid war for humans.

    As McClellen said in the Civil War, 1 infantry battalion could easily wipe out 10 cavalry battalions..........and he proved it which is why cavalry became "mounted" infantry.

    • @rayraymond2952
      @rayraymond2952 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely correct, but definitely the 1 infantry battalion wrecking 10 cav battalions is way overblown. :) The Civil War rifled musket had the capability of aimed shots accurate out to 300 yards. Therefore, cavalry charges with those nice big & tall target horses & riders against prepared rifled musket armed infantry generally became a recipe for the charging cavalry's defeat.

    Thanks Tinman. I showed this video to my 14 year olds in their history class to explain the fact that warfare and the relationship between man and horse had changed little in 2000 years, I followed it by showing the scene from Warhorse when the British cavalry are suddenly faced with the German machine guns after initially suprising the Germans, We were able to have a discussion about the mechanisation of war and new technology linking it to the Somme and the use of new technology. Thanks. Buzz

    Historically the Polish Hussars were one of the few Hussar units that were in fact heavy cavalry and they did quite well during their time against the mass musket formations of the time because of their tactics. (The wiki of the polish hussars explains this well) In short they started far apart and only closed the ranks before the charge hit to avoid heavy losses from volley 'wall of steel' fire on the aproach. They also had supply carts with spare lances so they could charge multiple times.

    In 1526 at Mohacz, almost 25.000 Hungarian knights started riding over Ottoman army. When they came close enough to Ottoman lines, the very first line of Ottomans opened toward left and right ends and 300 guns behind them started firing synchronously. after only two hours vast majority of the knights were lying on the ground with their horses together. time for knights had gone long ago. afterwards cavalry charge didn't have strategical importance. it played a secondary role in warfare.

    Almost every horse charge is wrong. A horse can not be rode full tilt for that amount of distance, unless it's your intention to kill your horse. Reality, they would start off with a slow canter until they were only a few hundred yards away, then break into a full gallop.

      +Robert Hickson "Moreover, the horses were bred to run very fast with a heavy load and to recover quickly. These were hybrids of old, Polish equine lineage and eastern horses, usually from Tatar tribes. As a result, a horse could walk hundreds of kilometres loaded with over 100 kilograms (warrior plus armour and weaponry) and instantly charge. Also, hussar horses were very quick and manoeuvrable. This made hussars able to fight with any cavalry or infantry force from western heavy cuirassiers to quick Tatars." about Winged Hussars - source wikipedia, you can dig for yourself if you wish ;)

    "Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrible. He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; He goes out to meet the weapons. He laughs at fear and is not dismayed; And he does not turn back from the sword. The quiver rattles against him, the flashing spear and javelin. With shaking and rage he races over the ground, and he does not stand still at the voice of the trumpet...

    Well, you know the day EMP's knocks out all modern warfare we will be riding horses into battle again and using them to pull artillery and stuff. Only now we gun better guns and longer range weapons. It co8uld be nice if we kept the lances and blades for close combat at least. When we run out of bullets we will go back to Arrows, Crossbows, Bows, and Spears too.

    According to Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War, cavalries are no match to a Roman Legion on foot. Cavalries were used to flank and harass the main army, but using it as a main attacking force usually ends up in defeat. It was like the Germans using the Luftwaffe as the main attacking force for the Battle of Britain. It ended up as a complete waste of resources and loss of experienced pilots.

    سطر لنا التاريخ بسيوف ورماح
    يوم الشجاعه نعسف الخيل حنا
    اااالله ياعز لنا والشرف راح
    نامت عزايمنا وعن الفجر نمنا
    الشام صاحت قبلها عراقنا طاح
    ومن غربة الواقع ميت دفنا

There are some pretty famous photos of U.S. Special Operation Forces on horseback from Afghanistan (there's even a monument to those soldiers), & Sudanese guerrillas still use them. India still still maintains an actual operational cavalry regiment. I'm sure there are others but those are off the top of my head. The horse hasn't seen its last day in combat yet. Google horses afgahnistan special operation forces. You'll find stories & pics.
