  • “Transforming the City towards low-carbon Resilience” introduces urban design principles that support the transformation of existing cities towards more resilience regarding the impact of climate change. Steffen Lehmann - Professor, University of Portsmouth/Founder of s_Lab Space Laboratory for Architectural Research and Design (Sydney - Berlin), bases the lecture on his research in sustainable cities’ transformation and introduces the compact, mixed-use and walkable city model as the most promising urbanization type. The lecture outlines the principles of Green Urbanism and two ongoing research projects: (1) Urban microclimates: How to keep cities cool; (2) Low impact construction using prefabricated engineered timber systems.

    Thank you for the presentation - Spot on. Let me emphasise the importance of public place by adding Key Message no.7 from the "Future of Places" conferences series;
    7. Sustainable public spaces that are healthy, safe, resilient, energy-conserving and resource efficient
    Public space and the buildings that surround and define it need to be socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Social sustainability requires security, equity and justice; economic sustainability benefits from affordable capital and operating budgets; environmental sustainability addresses ecological and health issues. These include clean air, water and soil, green micro-climates and the mitigation and adaptation to the Urban Heat Island Effect and Climate Change. Effective use should be made of green technologies and systems. Architecture and urban design that is adaptable and appreciated is cared for and sustained for a longer time.

    "21th Century to be pre fabricated timber material century"
    albeit above statement of Lehmann, S. being a big claim, it does sound practical and hope be it takes place as he foresees. this could also be accompanied by lowering the 'carbon' ingredients of concrete and increasing usage of environmentally friendly ingredients, i.e. GGBS and/or ultra low carbon concrete and/or cement free concrete - which in all fairness sounds a bit more realistic?
