In my experience, the actual or original recording and the mastering makes a HUGE difference.. then the DAC, specifically the analog stage. Bit rate / lossy vs lossless is less important in my experience as we are splitting hairs here...

😢I’ve recently downloaded all my Lossless Apple Music onto an iPad Pro M4 then connected to my Audiolab 7000 amplifier with internal DAC it shows the kHz when using USB B. However, the iPad Pro M4 is not automatically switching to the correct frequency. Example, if I play Hotel California at 192kNz it plays at 192kNz, then if I play The Beatles Come Together it also plays at 192kHz… so far so good. But if I play any song at 96 or 48kHz and then play Any other Beatles Track it will only play at the previous songs kHz not back to 192. So if I play ‘24hrs From Tulsa’ at 48kHz it will then play the Beatles (and most other Lossless tracks) at 48kHz without switching back to the higher level. The only way I can get it to play the highest possible kHz is to go back and play Hotel California at 192kHz. I tried my wife’s iPad, an older iPad Air and that works fine, switching back and forth depending on the song. I updated the iPad Pro M4 but still the same. Clearly something wrong there. If I Stream through the IpadProM4 it switches frequency ok, just has the problem when the tracks are downloaded. I know I downloaded in high res lossless because the file size went from 12GB to 42GB. 😢
It is hard to hear the difference between a good MP3/AAC and a FLAC...even with a good pair of speakers with a good receiver...Dali Zensor 7 with a Yamaha RX A1080...
This is an Audioquest and Bluesound ad video. WAV and AIFF has nothing to do with better HiRes when compared to FLAC. I have FLAC 32bit 384KHz which is the highest PCM available unless you upsample. These are not formats of music but containers of PCM. Same as DSF is container for PDM. Same as MKV is container for H.264 or H.265 or any video type.

It's my thought that most people who use their phone to listen to music aren't going to care about codec choices, file format, and so on. I tend to lean towards focusing on providers that emphasize lossless audio because I enjoy as much accuracy as I can afford.

I won't buy a device if it doesn't have Expandable Storage were I can Pop in my 1TB SD card full of my music files! Besides I live in the woods and cellar reception is spotty at best & why would I want to waste my Data plan streaming stuff I already have?
Spotify is not mp3, it's ogg. Lossles (flac) is using about 700-800kbit. And this is max what is technically possible for music. Hi res is also using flac. But, All above, all hi res is fake - from basic Niquist, The basis of pcm. There is No any value added above. Hi res steaming is pure fake and lie. High quality dac is uncomparably more important. But most of dacs are low quality one bit delta sigma topology. High quality dacs are multibit or full r2r topology. ESS is medium quality even within Delta sigma dacs family. Its medium quality within bad family. Streamers should work only as a transport to external high quality dacs. Bluesound has bad dac and it's bad as streamer transport. Hi res in this case is even more meaningless. Bluetooth is no any loss of quality in case of full lossless codec. Modern Bt has nothing to do with mp3 quality. There is no need for wired connection. Especially with bad one bit dacs and on systems like android or windows where mixer is performing resampling. Any wired connection have sense only with direct exclusive Mode, with bit to bit native sampling. Also in case of hi fi equipment using wire is worse option, as it's connection without galvanic isolation and cables are introducing a electrical interferences. Wifi is better option. Wired connection should be used only when device has its own independent galvanic isolation. There is no any packet loss with any real impact in case of any modern Wifi. Cables should be used optical, where galvanic isolation is standard, in this case quality and price of cable do not have absolute any meaning. Dragon fly is very old and also bad dac. What really is important - good multibit dac and service with stable full Lossless bit to bit connect service - only Tidal can Meet these conditions. In case of hifi system, streamer with tidal connect should be used, and with DDC and peq function - with acoustic adaptation possibilities. In case of bt, headphones, Lossless codec should be used, from aptx family. In case of wired connection, multibit dac should be used with exclusive direct mode.
CD quality is perfectly good even on very expensive gear.
And it is max what is technically possible. There is nothing above cd quality due to basic laws of physics.

Agree 100% a lousy recording will not sound great regardless of how you listen to it.
The recording quality. is the most importent factor ,there are a lot of. 24-196 that sound bad if poorly recorded

Hi res is pure fake. But independently, most os have broken system mixer. To achieve true bit to bit mode, direct exclusive Mode should be used.

If you're using a VPN, it could be showing you in Portugal.
Don't cripple your sound quality with compressed Spotify...instead use a quality lossless source like Apple Music.
But in a blind test you will loose, unless you’re a super human
