- Welcome to Macedonia! Prefecture of Kilkis. On the northern borders of Greece there is a valley surrounded by high mountains, crossed by two long rivers and has two natural lakes. Fertile place, where the sunlight is bright, nature is rich and rewards with its grace the whole creation! In this corner of Greece you will find hospitable and authentic people.

The area has been a crossroads of peoples. The Romans founded here Callicum or Kallikos in Greek which means the leather sieve for gold panning from Echedoros, ie Gallikos river. It is said that even today there are gold diggers looking for gold at the river or golden coins.
The city of Kilkis is built around the hill of Agios Georgios with a population of almost 30 thousand inhabitants. The view from above is unique. At the Lofos coffee bar you can stare at the view for hours enjoying a coffee or drink. Nearby is the open theater of the Hill, while at the top is the church of the same name.At the foot of the hill you can visit the Cave of Agios Georgios, one of the most remarkable in Greece. It consists of limestone rocks 200 million years old and more than 300 specimens of fossilized animal bones have been found. It was discovered by chance in 1925. The information that the cave is medically considered suitable for the treatment of respiratory diseases is interesting. Lake Doirani. A beautiful natural lake divided into two countries. While the landscape of extraordinary beauty calms you, your choices for sports and entertainment are endless. Hiking, fishing, canoeing, cycling, 4x4 routes, observation of migratory birds and why not, swimming! A uniquε, and sometimes eerie setting. Here, the typical fishing boats are called plava. Explore the beautiful lakeside area of 1000 trees, a Natura 2000 forest with oaks. In the tavern of the same name, whatever you try will be wonderful and will always be served with the wide smile of the hostess.
In the settlement of Doirani, everything seems to have been left behind in time. In the picturesque taverns the carp fish by the lake is a specialty!
British military cemetery. On the hill above Doirani there is a unique point in Greek territory. Incredible view, symmetry and elegance.
Mouria Rail Station is the liveliest and most active village in the area. Beautiful corners & cafes. In the tavern Trigono you will taste local meat and yummy delicacies
Kavalaris. This small and quiet village everything has remained as before. The tastes and smells of the beautiful tavern of the village will convince you.
Ano & Kato Poroia. These picturesque villages of Serres are a natural continuation of the excursion to Lake Doirani. We are located on the green mountain Beles or Kerkini. Clear air from the trees, the freshly baked bread of the oven, the well-cooked food of the house-ladies, the delicious grilled meat in the taverns. As for accommodation options? Stunning!
The Waterfalls of Skra. West of Kilkis and after crossing Axios river and climbing up Mount Paiko, we reach a scene from a fairy tale. Emerald Lake of Skra! One of the most beautiful places in Greece, a source of positive energy. Fresh water, bridges, waterfalls and plane trees, sunbeams and rustling, fairies, elves whistling carefree and playing with your shadow
Goumenissa. A picturesque town 40 km west of Kilkis. Taste the famous wines of the region, the aromatic grappa and the irresistible appetizers while the sounds from the bronze traditional musical instruments create a Bacchus ecstasy. Don’t forget to receive a blessing and worship Mary of Goumenissa at the Monastery.
Metalliko. Just outside the city of Kilkis is a red fountain in a beautiful village. And it is so named because from this fountain you can drink for free a delicious digestive natural mineral water reminiscent of the sour water of Florina. The wonderful scenery is completed by the ducks, the geese, the trees and one of the best taverns of Kilkis.
Pikrolimni is located south of Kilkis, near Nea Santa and has an average depth of 1 meter. In summer it is usually dried. It is considered the only lake in mainland Greece with salt water and its bottom consists of clay with sulfur compounds and nitrates. For this reason it has healing and cosmetic properties, while the salinity is three times higher than the Dead Sea! There is a Pilotherapy Center on the lake and in the summer the pilotherapy is performed inside the lake on the specially designed shore.
