  • In his documentary, Ethan Hawke captures the spirit of Seymour Bernstein, a top-level concert pianist turned teacher/philosopher. He's one of those people who just can see into people and offer insight with a gentle, but firm hand. He spoke to David Poland about, well, being Seymour.

I cannot get over all of his words…..This is the kind of knowledge that I was so eager to get all of my life…..He is the real thing, the kind of man that this society needs to listen to…

What a wonderful man this is. I hope he lives to become 110 years old. We need guys (and girls) like him. They are the salt of the earth.

Really enjoyed this conversation. Seymour Hirsch is authentic, appreciate his insights into the creative process. I love to watch all the accomplished young musicians on TH-cam doing covers of this song or writing in that composer’s style. It’s encouraging that this generation of musicians are composing again.

Is the title intentionally lifted from J. D. Salinger, or is it a coincidence?

Ethan has probably been listening to Bernstein and allowing it to sink in.

David Poland does not catch the essence of Seymour. He asks very practical questions instead of trying to discover Seymour's soul. Music is much more than just words

Different levels of understanding are common since to understand you need to share similar levels of recognition, experience, and devotion. Seymour is just so relaxed in himself that life itself shines through.

100% his questions were annoyingly colloquial, not worthy of Seymour

    Music is Bernstein's religion.

8:46 - Seymour, you must indeed become a born again Christian, There is no entry into heaven otherwise (see John chapter 3:5). Listen to Zac Poonen's 2500 + sermons on you tube. He speaks the truth alone.
