  • Incredible video shows miles of seals resting on the beach of a Cape Cod wildlife refuge. Marine biologists say the seal population in New England is surging, but it is causing side effects for locals. Don Dahler reports from Chatham, Massachusetts.

Really? You've seen them there? I always wondered why the seal population was growing there despite knowing that Monomoy is protected and offers them shelter from human disturbance but is it only that and fish that brings them there in such great numbers or is there a certain type of food source that is causing this?

The federal government banned siene nets for menhaden back in 2012 or 15. So with more mendaden =more predatry species, stripers, blues etc, not to mention humpback whales, seals etc etc etc

The sharks will thin out the seal population and the Orcas will take care of the sharks.

Seal populations have rebounded everywhere to the point where they are having enormous impacts on other important animals. The Marine Mammal Act was needed in its day, but that day is long gone, as the MMA has been wildly successful. Now it is time to manage seals like any other game animal. Sell, lottery, or auction off 25 to 50 seal permits a year, and see if five years of hunting them doesn't have an impact on stabilizing their numbers. This situation is a lot like Canada geese, which decades ago had been over hunted; now, they are overabundant pests spreading disease throughout urban and suburban communities. Biologists have to keep their eyes on the biggest purpose.

    • @harislittle9241

they wouldn't be a problem naturally if we didn't overfish the oceans to the point of collapse, taking 90+ per cent of the numbers of some species :/

    • @pamtnman1515
      @pamtnman1515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@harislittle9241 I agree with you to a point. No question that humans, particularly the Chinese, are exploiting the oceans beyond carrying capacity. However, The American Indians hunted seals aggressively, without hurting their populations. I’m confident we can have limited harvests.

and every single seal will bite the heck out of your hand if you try to touch them. This ain't a cartoon, these are wild animals. And seals are notoriously nasty on dry land. In the water they can be curious and pushy.

This report is five (5) years old. Things have gotten a lot worse. I’m not advocating for killing seals or sharks. However, we need to aware of just how dangerous the ocean has gotten in this area. I wouldn’t swim anywhere near a seal population.

So if the seals are eating all the fish, as well as attracting sharks, which makes swimming highly dangerous, then swim well away from them. It is their ocean, and if they are concentrating on the seals it must be safer to go elsewhere.

alot of people could benefit from seal meat . u eat a cute lamb or baby cow why not a seal?\
2 seal cutlet (about 4 ounces each)
    2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    Salt and pepper to taste
    3 tablespoons butter, divided
    1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 pound fresh mushrooms, thinly sliced
    1/3 cup chicken broth
    2 teaspoons minced fresh parsley
Flatten cutlets to 1/8-in. thickness. In a resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, salt and pepper. Add seal; seal bag and shake to coat evenly. In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons butter and oil. Add seal; cook over medium heat for about 1 minute on each side or until juices run clear. Remove and keep warm.
Add mushrooms to skillet; cook and stir for 2-3 minutes or until tender. Spoon over seal. Stir broth into skillet, stirring up any browned bits. Add parsley and remaining butter; cook and stir 2 minutes longer or until slightly thickened. Pour over seal and mushrooms.
