  • Happy Birthday to Uncle Ho!
The song is sung in (British) English, but is sung by a Scottish singer, Ewan MacColl.
The Ballad of Ho Chi Minh, an upbeat folk song that praised Ho for his leadership and devotion to the people of Vietnam. MacColl was inspired by the Viet Minh victory at Dien Bien Phu and frustrated with Western propaganda that painted Ho Chi Minh as a nascent tyrant.
According to the lyrics of MacColl’s ballad, Ho Chi Minh is a leader who seeks to “drive invaders from his land” in order to secure “peace and freedom” for the Vietnamese people. MacColl’s song became popular around the world, particularly in North Vietnam (as Vietnamese lyrics were written).

I didn't know this song was originally written in English! Also crazy that the same guy wrote both this and Dirty Old Town.

It truly is interesting that the actual Vietnamese government liked a Scottish guy's song so much they wrote an official Vietnamese version haha

Ho Chi Minh lost his political power inside North Vietnam already after the XX Congress of the CPSU.
Ho Chi Minh cannot be compared with Enver Hoxha, the 5th Classic of Marxism-Leninism who transformed the anti-fascist liberation struggle into the dictatorship of the proletariat.
In contrast, Vietnam was never a state of the dictatorship of the proletariat and consequently there was never socialism in Vietnam.
Particularly, Ho Chi Minh was not a pioneer of the anti-revisionist struggle against Krushchevism and Maoism as comrade Enver Hoxha.
However, the chief culprits for social-fascism in Vietnam was NOT Ho Chi Minh.
Guilty for social-fascist oppression and exploitation in Vietnam are the capitalist-revisionist leaders and their current imperialist and social-imperialist backers and overlords, especially from China.
The struggle for liberation from imperialism goes on and the socialist revolution in Vietnam is on the agenda !
Ho Chi Minh was a great revolutionary who combined successfully the spirit of proletarian internationalism with the spirit of patriotism for Vietnam's liberation from imperialist colonialism.
He defeated the main enemy of the world - the US-imperialism, but he could not break through the capitalist-revisionist encirclement as compared with comrade Enver Hoxha.
Nevertheless, we defend this great revolutionary and his merits for the Vietnamese people and for the oppressed and exploited peoples all over the world - without keeping silent on his deviation towards revisionism!
At latest with the death of Stalin, Ho-Chi-Minh had left the genuine Marxist-Leninist Path.
As Stalinist-Hoxhaists we defend only the revolutionary merits of the "early" Ho Chi-Minh - but not his revisionist deviation from Marxism-Leninism in his latest period.
