I have been on 5 NCL Cruises this year as a solo traveller both with and without Free at Sea. Honestly, for me, it was cheaper to NOT get Free at Sea and just buy drinks when I was in Port or the occasional drink on board. Say I had a couple of glasses of wine a day - including tip, around $30. I don't drink everyday so let's say $15 a day. If I was going to get my money's worth from the purchased beverage package I would have to drink 7 glasses of wine a day just to break even - sorry, my liver can't handle that. Free at Sea will be less than half of that but still - I am not going to be drinking 5 drinks a day for a 15 day cruise! As for the excursions, I like to do my own thing as an experienced traveller so I usually just walk into the Port city from the ship and spend - almost NOTHING! As for the Specialty Dining - I am by myself so why do I need to go to a specialty restaurant on board when the regular food is free and very good - also if I really want a nice meal I will do it in Port where it is more memorable. Finally Inetrnet - you only get 150 free minutes with Free at Sea which is nothing so, depending on the cruise, I either just use free internet in port or if it is a transatlantic or very long cruise I will fork out for the unlimited internet which is worth it IMHO. So you can save a TON of money by not getting Free at Sea, especially if you are solo like me and follow my tips - but if you are with a group it might be worth it - especially if you don't travel much and want to have a really special experience - but I travel all the time and would rather do my own thing and enjoy the ports. Different strokes for different folks.
I always opt to not get the drinks package when I get free at sea. My bill is NEVER as high as the added gratuity is. I do like the two free dining meals, as otherwise I don't go to specialty restaurants. As a solo, the "free" shore excursion works nicely for me, as the $50 discount means I can get a few actually free excursions, and the discount usually means that going with the ship is about the same as on my own, and I'm more comfortable with that solo.
I compared ncl cost with similar cruises and the cost was generally similar not really for Hawaii but others do not have free at sea. If on do the sail away I'd just pay for individual. Drinks.. it was $109 a day when I went this year and there is no way I can drink enough to justify that
I’m about to take a NCL cruise and opted out for the beverage package b/c not worth it for the amount of cocktails I drink and it’s not really free. I also upgraded wifi similar to you. Thx!
You can get Free at Sea and remove the drink package. We do this because we are not drinkers. It saves you those gratuities, but we still get the specialty dining, internet, and shore excursion credit (if we choose to use it).😊
My wife and I are going on our first cruise in April 2025. Ncl getaway out of NOLA. WE'LL be celebrating our 23rd anniversary and my 50th birthday. Hoping we have an unforgettable time. Thank you for all your tips
Wow. This is one of the best detailed rundowns of a cruise and cruise line I’ve ever seen. And I really want to try Breakaway. Thank you so much for this clear and informative review / how-to. thanks!
I'm about to go on the Gem for the 2nd time and I love the smaller ships. I don't need all the bells and whistles. I'm looking to relax, not schedule every minute of my days.
I’ve traveled with Norwegian about 7 times. I’ve followed your channel for a few years. This has to be the best video I’ve enjoyed from you! Very informative! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Excellent informative video. I am a regular Royal CCL cruiser and have diamond status on that cruise line. I had been on NCL several times previously and booked it last year for a cruise out of New Orleans. We paid more for a balcony room on Breakaway and I was very disappointed. The room and balcony we tiny. There was a foot between the bed and the closet. We were told the newer ships are roomier. When we went to the dining room there was a sign that Prime Rib was being served in the Garden Buffet. I expected to be able to get it in the dining room but no it was not available. We finished our mediocre meal and went to the buffet for the Prime Rib. I have always preferred having dinner in the dining room but found the food choices better in the buffet., not my first choice for dinner meals. We regularly went to the buffet after going to the dining room for crepes or other options not available in the dining room. We also had a problem with our toilet not flushing. Needless to say this was more than a regular inconvenience. After the cruise we were give a Future Cruise Credit which we have decided to use. The positives were the entertainment and deck parties were great! We didn’t take the Free at See. We don’t drink more than 2 drinks a day. We bought cheap drinks on shore and treated ourselves to the Vodka Ice Bar one day. I do prefer the Newer Ships of Royal Caribbean but probably would have preferred a newer NCL. On Royal I get 4 drinks a day for free with my diamond status, which I share. I would suggest people trying different cruise lines to see which one they find is best for them. People who drink a lot would probably be happiest with the NCL Free at Sea. Happy cruising!
My kids young adults prefer Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) because they offer a wide range of activities and plenty of options, even if some come with an extra cost. We also appreciate sailing on newer ships. While Royal Caribbean ships look impressive, the idea of sailing with twice as many passengers isn’t as appealing to us.
We removed the ‘free’ drink package from our recent cruise on NCL Joy and it dropped our price down on our trip even more, by quite a bit. So run the figures both ways to see if it really makes sense.
That's because you have to pay 20% gratuity on the free drinks. That's like $350 for two people for 7 days. You pay gratuity on the specialty dining "free" too, but it only adds like $15-30 per person.
Thank you for explaining the Perks on NCL to first-time cruisers! We love NCL! The only thing I would add is that the Casinos At Sea perks are awesome. After our first sailing, we were invited back with a cabin comp! We play anyway... If you do play, get a card like you would like at any casino. You will receive points, just like a casino. You can exchange them for free play OR use them on the very last night towards your cabin charges. Oftentimes, the credit you receive will be higher than the cash value. This means you may have $25 in free play, but you will receive an onboard credit for $35 or more! Also, don't be surprised if you are invited back in the future for a free cabin! You must pay taxes, port fees, and gratuities. You can even pay a bit and get an upgraded cabin. If you enjoy playing in the casino and will gamble anyway, get the players card!
We went on the Pearl twice in 2022, are also Platinum members. We love O'Sheehan's, go there for breakfast, occasionally lunch and usually a nightcap very late at night, sometimes with pretzels or wings. We like it so much that we've booked 5 cruise staterooms (Includes Nor. Dawn and Nor. Gem) near O'Sheehan's. My husband loves it because there are so many signs pointing to O'Sheehan's so he can find his stateroom easily at 1 a.m. We're booked on the Pearl for May 12 of this year....Would love to buy stock, but we're not too savvy about investing in stock.
I've been out of town and not online, but I really appreciate the time you took to put this together. It's everything I would tell someone about sailing Norwegian. We love it too. No formal nights, the laid back vibe, it's so nice. And it doesn't cost more like people think. You just have to know what kind of cruiser you are. Do you need free at sea or not? That makes a big difference like you said. If you add those things to the other lines rates, it's pretty similar. All the lines make it difficult to compare apples to apples, but I did do the math on a couple of our cruises to try to compare as close as I could and there just wasn't enough difference to give up what we like. NCL usually has better itineraries too. We compare but always end up on NCL.
Thank you for this awesome positive review of NCL. I am sapphire level, mostly Haven, passenger. It’s refreshing after all the negative comments that have been circulating lately. You brought back to mind all of the wonderful reasons why we love NCL. Getting ready to head out next week on Prima for the 2nd time and then Encore the week after⚓
Alisa... what a great informative video. I owned a Cruise Ship Centre travel agency back in the late 80s At the time the "Norway" was the largest cruise ship in the world. It was always my dream to go on it. I was also a waiter at the Keg & Cleaver restaurant. I was able to block 10 cabins and took all my co-workers on the cruise to the Caribbean for $999 dollars and that included airfare. I am from Vancouver Canada and it was winter at the time so what an adventure it was for us to all cruise on the largest cruiseship in the world. The service was great, the food was great... it was a very memorable cruise for all of us since we were all in our twenties. I was 27. It is nice to see that NCL has progressed so much forward today to accomodate everyone's needs. I was in tears when the Norway was beached and torn apart about 10 years ago. Thank you so much for such a great video to where NCL is going now,
Tip #16 - NCL credit card. No annual fee. 25,000 sign-up bonus. Low qualifying cost - your cruise will be enough. Multiple points for NCL purchases. Each point is 1 cent, therefore they pay you $250 (25000 points) to get the card ! Points are good for other travel perks, not just NCL OBC
@@lisaruben4954I’ve had this credit card since 2017 (our first cruise) and the interest rate is STILL the lowest of all our cards, even with the economy raising them so much. I’ve only used my points once as they were expiring, but now I have about $500 to use on our cruise this October. Since we only cruise NCL it’s truly worth it 😊. Enjoy your cruise🚢!!
We have done flights with NCL twice now, it has saved us a ton of money. Only downside is it’s always a red-eye flight getting there. The flight home is always fine.
One thing I noticed as people explain the Free at Sea perks, they have always forgotten some significant details of the drink package. Two things that set them apart: a) It is unlimited drinks, unlike the Carnival brands that limit you to 15 per 24 hours. b) You can order "doubles" if you want. To me, I like this. I love a black rum float on my Mai Tai. I want a double shot of Bailey's in my coffee. The FREE AT SEA program is a great option, even if you are paying gratuities for the 🍸 and specialty dinning 🍽, as well as the slight increase in room rates over the Sail Away prices.
One thing nobody mentions is poolside drinks. Even pool drinks are included. During the day I like smoothies--even without any liquor, they are close to $8 each.
Also I feel like people often forget to mention you're allowed to order two drinks at once which was so helpful. One person could get seats for a show or event and the other could go to the bar and order two drinks at once.
It's not so free, we just took a cruise on NCL and didn't like it at all. The food was horrible, very low grade! The buffet, it's a feeding frenzy with all of the people knocking into you constantly
Interesting. As I researched NCL, I found their site not to be as user friendly as other lines. You really have to spend time on the site to find basic info...
I'm a new subscriber who is going on my 1st ever cruise on the Breakaway in February, going for 2 weeks to England! Can't wait! Your videos ate really informative, thanks!
My first and my husband and I are doing the same REPOSITIONING cruise from MIA. He will be finished with radiation treatments and we were looking for a laid back vacation. See you there!
Excellent video. Thanks so much for sharing these tips. My husband and I are new cruisers. After watching this video, I do believe that we are going to give NCL a try.
On our Alaska cruise we booked a thermal suite cabin it was only about $200.00 more than a balcony cabin, it's a little bit cool to use the pools in Alaska
Just got off my 4th NCL Cruise. Did a 11 night southern Caribbean cruise on the Dawn. Love that ship. Perfect size and less crowded. Sadly the fares on the smaller ships are higher than the larger ones. But that makes sense given the economics of business. Overall I like the free at sea, the wine selection being the only miss.
Very good tips. Taking my first cruise end of this month on NCL Epic for 43rd bday with fiancé and super excited. We did opt for the freestyle dining with unlimited drink package and wifi. The balcony cabin is a minimum must for me if im close to water
Just got back from Alaskan cruise on Norwegian Bliss, it was a blast. My first time is unforgettable experience. From housekeeping to the mtd, I was just blown away. They all gave us tips and show us the way. I want to try solo on September, already make deposit for next year with my daughter. Got a peak of their suite and thats what I want next time around.
We’ll be sailing on the Bliss Nov 12th of this year & this is our first cruise with NCL, so I was a bit reluctant because I’m a Diamond cruiser on RCCL & changing cruise lines was a pull. It doesn’t look as busy as RCCL ( I have 2 young children) but I’m looking forward to something different.
Hey! I'm an avid cruise goer. I planned my buddies bachelor party on an NCL cruise for February. It will be my first NCL, thank you so much for this video. You're delivery is great and you can really tell you enjoy cruising!
Love the tip about using the app from the waiting area! I have been going around the group waiting for the elevators as we board, walking up 1 deck, and using the Kiosk at the elevator bank to make my reservations for the trip.
I've grown to like NCL after two cruises (and a third next month). There are some little things I do not feel are fair. On my cruise from Hawai'i to Tahiti I tried Le Bistro as one of my free meals and was really disappointed. They had two dinners that were about the same price but had package surcharges that were not. One was $10.00, and the other was Lobster Thermador for $25.00. I did not understand that if I paid for the dinners I would have paid the same amount, yet I had to pay $15.00 more. I love lobster, so I decided to pay the surcharge. What I should have done was pay for the meal and use the package meal in the Japanese restaurant. What upset me more than the surcharge was they charged me $25.00 for Rock Lobster, not Maine Lobster. There is a huge taste difference between the two and an even larger price difference. So, paying more for an inferior product upset me.
Great tips! I'm single so love the NCL solo travelers program. Studio cabins are the perfect size (no unneeded space), private lounge is convenient, and have our own activities director. Unfortunately, not all ships offer this option. Just subscribed to your channel. Cruising on the JOY this November (US Marine Corps Birthday Cruise). I do take advantage of the military discount (retired Marine).
me too. retired military solo cruiser. my first time on norwegian, i'm on escape. i'm seeing how i like the solo cabin. it is a chunk of money, so i am making sure to enjoy everything i like. like the water rides, maybe the spa, at least one massage, the excursions & fine dining. i opted out of the drink pkg which reduced my fare by $200.00, & i will just buy the drinks i want.i don't drink alcohol or soda, so it won't work for me. i can't wait.
It's very pleasant listening to you, you guys are excellent at thoroughly explaining the things that me and my wife are interested in, thank you so much
Nice job Alisa! Enjoyed your commentary. You are very informative and pleasant to listen to. Appreciate your tips. We loved discovering the fish going north on the hallway carpet, especially the 1 or 2 little red guys going south, made us laugh! Thankyou!
Before I ate at teppanaki, I was thinking to myself yuck. And that I was gonna go one deck below when I was done to get a milkshake. But after that meal (which was the best meal I had on the encore) I was way to fully get the shake. I just loved it
You are 100% right that using NCL's flights usually means a less-than-optimum time for the flight home. We usually do a flight deviation both *to* and *back* and spend a day in the port city on both ends. Reduces stress on both "ends"...but it does add the cost of hotel stays.
Thank you. Your videos are so helpful. I just booked a solo Alaska cruise on the Bliss. You tour of ship and restaurant recommendations videos are very informative. I used my a local travel agent. No "Free at Sea" offered. I did get one specialty dining, but being one person, not a great value. Don't dink much but might get the soda package for $80.
Just finished solo, senior, Alaska on the Bliss April 27-May4 ….i went on this cruise at my husbands insistence. He is unable to travel at the moment and I was resistant at the thought of a cruise…I am almost 71! He said you don’t know till you go and try a cruise! He is going to regret this!😻😍😸I am hooked! Being my first cruise and on NCL I have nothing to compare my experience to but I had a blast! I have never met a stranger and LOVE to talk and I had 4001 people to talk to. Never waited for a drink at the bar…loved the buffet but the evenings at the Manhattan and Taste I got lovely table by the window! Jersey Boys was fantastic and the Bandoke night was great. Used spec dining credits at Tappenyaki and Los Lobos. Great experiences at both. Get ready for beauty you can’t imagine and great fun! I’ve already booked a New England and Canada for September on the Jade….🤷♀️who knew? I’m. Cruise Fanatic now…
My first Norwegian cruise is scheduled on the Dawn in June of 2024. It starts in Stockholm and ends in Oslo. The cruise was chosen due to the itinerary but it's a busy itinerary of a new port every day. I'm looking forward to sailing with Norwegian
I just go off the Getaway, my first time on NCL, out of New York, a 12 day Caribbean cruise, with 35 cruises on Princess. I watched numerous videos about the ship so I would have some ideas about the layout. Since an inside stateroom I found out was cheaper than my booked studio & my inside was the difference as day & night compared to an inside on Princess, & I took the free upgrade. Here’s some of my observations. I chose to not book my airfare through NCL, partly because I would not have any control of my flights as I was coming from San Francisco, plus I was arriving 3 days early & would have had to book my hotel with them, I found out through my agent $1,000, which I said no. Some things you just have to experience at the terminal & once you’re on the ship. I arrived at the terminal at 8:30 am & a short time latter I was checked in & was given boarding group #22. I saw people outside the terminal that looked like they were boarding the ship & then realized they were in the Haven Class which meant lots more $ to board before anyone else. I questioned as to my boarding number, as I had checked in real early, & was told it because of the level you are in. Once on board I noticed a long line for dinning reservations, plus a line for show reservations. I realized much later that there was large screens near the elevators where you could do the same thing. I ate most of my dinners in the tropicana dinning room & found that where you sat the service was either great or so-so. One night I waited 45 minutes for my drink order. I’m not a picky eater but a lot of the dinner meals were fair but on Princess they were usually great. I was surprised when I was told that they had no shared tables, but other people were asked if they would like to share a table. The staff onboard were great. I feeling that another layout might have made a difference as you mentioned. They cut out all of the Broadway shows as they are having financial problems. I was amazed as to the size of the Atrium & if I wanted a seat for a event I needed to be there 90 minutes before to get a seat otherwise I would be standing. I had a printed schedule in my stateroom every night without having to ask so perhaps it depends which shop you’re on. Thanks for your video.
I will never sail NCL again because my husband has stage IV pancreatic cancer he can't stand in long lines so I think it was a little disgusting of them to make us pay for priority boarding. That was supposed to come with priority disembarkation which we never received and ended up standing in line like a herd of cattle for 2+ hours waiting on shuttles, that we paid for, that still hadn't arrived. They broke my suitcase which caused a brand new bottle of perfume to smash inside and they refused to even reimburse us for the shuttle that we were never able to take. We had to pay for a taxi. So they are great once you're on board but once the cruise is over, they could care less about you. So they have literally forced me to have to put a reverse charge on my card at least for the shuttle that we never took. I don't know how long they expected a man that has stage IV terminal pancreatic cancer to stand in line and wait for a shuttle, but I think 2 hours was more than enough. I could see how sick he was getting, so we prepaid for a shuttle and had to pay for a taxi. While people in wheelchairs were whipping past us. He doesn't like to announce to the world that he is sick so there's no reason for him to be in a wheelchair as he can walk, but as far as standing in lines, that's a different story. So I think they should allow disabled people to board early without charging them $179.
I had no idea there were travel agents still!! You are definitely knowledgeable and I will absolutely check back with you when we get our new passports. I’m subscribing!
Great tips! Thank you! I just spoke with my PCC today. Show reservations will be reservable prior to boarding beginning March 4th. He said to check daily because I might have to wait till 21 days prior, but I sail on the Bliss April 22nd, so I have time. I have booked Teppanyaki for my birthday, Le Bistro, and Cagney’s. All at 5:30. Not fond of early dining, but I wanted to be sure I can see first shows. I can always get a late snack at the Local if hungry again. I think I’d rather do a massage and facial versus the thermal suite. I get bored too easily lol. I need to dig out my “You Can’t Do That in Television” tee for the 80s party and spot my fellow Xennials! I have a studio with a lowball bid for a balcony, but Haven is chartered and spa is sold out, so I’ll see. April for Alaska is off season, so never know! If I don’t get it, I love that I have a private lounge and hallway for the studio. I just wish NCL would eventually follow RCCL and make studios with balconies down the line.
We will be on the Bliss to Alaska at that time too! It’s our first NCL cruise (we did one Carnival cruise about 30 years ago!)🚢 Can’t wait. TYSM for the tip on entertainment booking. I was getting anxious. 😂
Thanks for the tip. I am scheduled on April 22nd and definitely go to the apps and book early. This will be my first cruise and hopefully everything turn out right.
My mom and aunt have used NCL religiously the last few cruises. It's their favorite now. Even sold out shows the bartenders were getting them tickets. My aunt is an incomplete quadriplegic but she can walk in a boot for awhile. She was very upset about not being able to walk the steps to get to the smoking area. The guy in the cigar lounge welcomed them to smoke in there which isn't usually allowed. Someone complained and the police officer came over, saw her handicap issue, smiled and said you ladies have a wonderful time. Very fun and accommodating 😊
Went on our 1st cruise in March 2023. We were on NCL Dawn and absolutely loved it. We are 224 days away from our next NCL cruise, on the Encore. We are heading to eastern carribean and have friends that just cruised on the Encore 2 weeks ago in Alaska. I liked the Dawn because it was big enough for me. I was (and honestly, still am) concerned about the crowds on the Encore, but I am willing to give it a go.
We are on the Jewel from Panama to San Diego beginning March 21. So I think just before yours. We got a pretty good deal I believe, inside cabin with air for 3600 with the free at sea package.
This is a great video!!!!! I am cruising for the 1st time on Escape in April as a solo. This was very informative. I actually got 50% off my airfare because I was solo which was great..
We tried the bigger NCL ship last year, not our thing. Going BACK to Jewel this coming February, we loved that ship to Alaska. Best crew ever ! We get to go on what looks like our dream itinerary, eight ports in twelve days. Looks to be a one time only !
Thanks for the tips! I wish I had used a travel agent, which I thought when I first called Norwegian I could get one. BUT now I see I get someone different every time I call! Will definitely look for a travel agent next time!
Cruised both private Islands, Harvest Cay has the best lifeguards ever! Not just cruise islands but best ever! A station every 60 feet, and if you stumble coming out of the ocean they will jump and run to help!
Thank you for all the info. We are embarking on our first NCL cruise this fall. I was wondering why NCL had not asked us about dining times and now I know why.
We are booked for December 1st 2024 and we asked for pricing on airfare for four people two days before our cruise flying out the day after. They gave a price and it was DOUBLE what we found for the same time lines. I'm not sure what they were booking us on but dang!!!
a couple things. the $50 excursion credit is not limited to one excursion per port. It is applied only to passenger one on the reservation but if you are able to do multiple excursions in one port, the $50 discount will apply to all of them. Totally agree, do the air deviation at least for embarkation. fly in a day or two early to make sure, even if the airlines screw up, you still make your cruise. Note: you must schedule the deviation at least 75 days pre cruise. after that NCL will not let you schedule the deviation. Love the specialty dining promo. Le Bistro is always our favorite!!!
You packed a lot of good information in your comment!...We've done free at sea several times. We've always had to pre-pay the service charge on free specialty dining, as well as for the Unlimited Bev. PKG. My favorite specialty dining is Teppenyaki and my husband's is Cagney's. I even started making Japanese fried rice after our last cruise on the Pearl in November.
Of all the travel videos and video bloggers yours are the absolute best! I'm going on the n c l pride of america in October My niece had already booked it and made selections which were not the best, but I've been wanting to go on that ship forever so. I would just go with the flow. But I want to do some solo cruising and if I get someone agreeable to do a cruise with me.I'll do a cheaper one with a roommate. And I will definitely be booking with you in your agency!
Great comprehensive video! Thank you for doing it :-) I do have a few comments: 1. As (an often) solo traveler (especially cruising), I appreciated the specific section on solo travel. I would like to point out that in some instances (like when the single supplement is 0%), a regular cabin may be cheaper. It pays to investigate the different options. 2. As a general rule, is the Solo Lounge available to any solo cruiser, even if they're not in a solo studio? 3. An upgrade may be to a less desirable location, and you can't change your mind once your bid is accepted and you're assigned the new cabin! 4. One doesn't have to accept all of the Free At Sea choices -- you can opt out of the ones you don't want and the respective gratuity charges will disappear. I'm looking forward to my August cruise on Jewel!
So we are sailing on the Prima April 28th!!! And like you, we are no strangers to NCL!! Love it!! I think this is our 14th Norwegian cruise!! I will tell you, though, I went on the app a few days ago and was able to book Donna Summer Musical, and Price is Right. Also booked Hasuki, Food Republic and Los Lobos. Was not, however able to book any other specialties at this point but I was happy to be able to secure the entertainment and some of the restaurants!!!❤
Great tips but the one thing you left out when talking about the sail away rate is NCL controlling the location. This is similar to guaranteed cabins on other cruise lines. If not being under the pool deck or under a restaurant is important to you, it’s best to not go this route. Some times you will luck out and get a great location but it’s a roll of the dice.
You are so right! It is for that reason that I never do guarantee. With all the promotions, a travel agent with terrific prices and Norwegian's military/veteran discount, I'm happy with the price we pay for each cruise.
Great video with great tips! I’ve yet to cruise with Norwegian and look forward to in the future. I’ve never used a travel agent, but will be sure to give you a call when I’m ready to book my next vacation.
I am amazed at the drinks package prices that you quoted. I sailed on Ovation of the Seas here in Australia for a 14-night cruise, and the premium package was $165/day. The cruise fare includes gratuities here, and maybe the drinks package reflects that in the price.
Thank you!! Your information was so perfect for a first time NCL cruiser (in May!)! Keep up the GREAT videos!!! Next cruise we're booking with you guys!!
Great video, awesome information. We are taking a cruise in April 2025 on the NCL Escape, we have the drink package and the wifi, plus NCL are doing are flights, one flys free. We are a little nervous about that, hopefully the flights are good, as we are from Canada. So looking forward to to this cruise. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🇨🇦🛳️
One thing with flights too is you can't make any modifications once they book it. So no upgrading to a better seat or changing times if you see a better flight. It's a good deal if you don't mind that but if you want some control (like me), it may not be worth it.
The flights booked by NCL have only been a miss for me. Had flights booked the day before but got an arrival at 9pm. Had a flight booked after the cruise with a 5 hours stop over. Direct the flight would have been 2.5 hours. Stopped doing this when they offered me a $400 air fare credit and quoted me a $1200 flight from Rome to Amsterdam. Booked it myself for $129. Regarding the Sail Away, you can't choose your cabin besides the prices for Sail Away are just a little lower than the next category. Any other fare you can ( unless they reach the guarantee status) choose your cabin and simply opt out for one or more of the Free at Sea offers. I would never upgrade the beverage package. A lot to say about NCL but charging the difference between the $15 and the price of a top shelf drink is reasonable. Some cruise lines simply charge you the full amount. I also avoid buying and upgrading in advance as much as possible. The OBC's given by TA's and Shareholder OBC are non refundable and only a great value as long as you spend them on useful items. Don't get excited over 15% discount on a 2 meal dining package bought in advance. It's a way better deal to buy it on your first day on board using your free OBC. Then last but not least. If you have a huge amount of OBC's but $100 short to buy that beautiful $1000 necklace you saw on board. Just tell them you want to buy it but only want to spend your OBC. I am sure you'll get it with $100 discount 😊.
I’m not sure that I heard this on the video but regarding the free at sea airfare. If you’re traveling in a small group like my new acquaintances on our last cruise in May. They had 3 cabins all of which were traveling from the same town with our ship leaving from Miami. All 3 cabins were on different flights and flew into both FLL And Miami. The problem was that all of the elderly people were on the flights that landed in fll so they were on their own to gather their bags. They all made it fine. On the cruise one of the elders became I’ll and spent several days in the medical center and was sent by ambulance to a Miami hospital which made the flights back home a bit more complicated.
Going to the meditterean this fall. No drink package included as well as speialty dining. I don't drink everyday. Le Bistro resturant sounds good! No wifi included. Thanks for the tips.
I love dressing up and I'm going on my first cruise on The Norwegian Sun from New Zealand in February 2025. In the evenings I'll be wearing my glamorous but comfortable loose kaftans, of which I have many, and they are light to pack and easy to wash and dry. I'm only taking 2 pairs of nice sandals, not my whole shoe wardrobe which would take several suitcases!
On the Alaskan cruise we had also no success in connecting to the wifi. My phone worked in most ports but not icy straits which is pretty much in the sticks( beautiful but it seem undeveloped) massages was extremely expensive( about 6 x what a massage in the usa cost)
We did our first NCL cruise last Oct and did the Free at Sea. The excursion credit almost paid for itself. It also included bottles of wine in the MDR on the upper right side of the wine list. Water WAS included. Having said that, there wasn't anything special about NCL that would have is come back. We did the same 2 specialties. I tried to order in French and the guy looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language - well I WAS! We couldn't use the air fare because we flew to Spain to visit relatives several days in advance and they only book flights from your home country and US/Canada are interchangeable. BUT, I am elite AA so I would book my own flights anyway. Do people REALLY book a cruise TWO years out? We LOVE the 'freestyle' dining options of cruise lines today. Our last 2 on Carnival and NCL had this option. We used the app to 'get on the list'. Carnival was no more than 20mins. We NEVER waited on NCL. And thanks for that clarification re formal nights. I just figured we didn't get the memo. We did a trans Atlantic reposition cruise on RCL in 2009 (it was another 13 years 'til our next one) and we were given the Formal/Semi/Casual night calendar. So, I hauled my suit from Texas to the Dominican to the cruise ship in a NICE garment bag. It was crumpled anyway. So I wore my crumpled suit to the first formal night and they were letting people in that looked like they had just washed on shore after a ship wreck! I decided right then, I wasn't going to do that anymore. If they didn't want me in the MDR, I'd go to the buffet! Flash forward to our next cruise in 2022. We do a Carnival out of Baltimore to Bermuda. We actually drove so I COULD have brought a suit but Carnival didn't inform us of any formal nights. We found out the day before on the newsletter. The Carnival vets knew and I wondered if we would be seated in my Docker/Polo set up. We were. But some of those Carnival hardcores gave us looks! Nest was the Med NCL. I stuck to my word - NO SUIT! I guess it didn't matter. Going on HAL next. Again, either my Docker/Polo set up will be ok, or I'll eat at the buffet! As for the MDR dress code for DINNER. A LOT of women's tops are not Ts but don't have a collar. Unisex jeans are allowed but they'd rather see slacks. And I think swimwear (including women's covers) aren't allowed in the MDR for breakfast and lunch. Food was pretty decent! Carnival prefabs the scrambled and (oddly) eggs Benedict. If you want made to order eggs on Carnival, order either fried or omelet from either MDR or omelet station. First thing we do when we board is the self guided tour.
Just got off the Norwegian Jade (off December 24th) off a 14 day cruise. Everyone in my group (and we are not picky eaters), thought the Garden Buffet after the first few days, the food was often dry or overheated…just nasty. I liked the Grand Pacific main dining room, however just didn’t have the time to eat every meal in the dining room. The scrambled eggs were runny… I did enjoy the showtimes and the cruise director, Ralph, was the most fun cruise director ever. Free at sea “excursions” is extremely deceptive…literally per room only $50 off the person first listed in the room…that’s right…only the first person listed which is very disappointing.
Did I miss anything?? What tip would YOU give for NCL???
Moderno on Escape was amazing!! Loved the salad bar, definitely going to do it again next January
I mentioned as a separate comment, but show reservations prior to sailing is coming back March 4th. My PCC confirmed this today. 😊
I think you sailed on Pride of America too!
Be aware that Norwegian now has a discount for Military and Veterans. And the discount applies to spouses too.
@@imacrayzcritter thank you for this!!!
Drinks.. it was $109 a day when I went this year and there is no way I can drink enough to justify that
Great advice ❤
So incredibly helpful!!!!😊
I’m about to take a NCL cruise and opted out for the beverage package b/c not worth it for the amount of cocktails I drink and it’s not really free. I also upgraded wifi similar to you. Thx!
You can get Free at Sea and remove the drink package. We do this because we are not drinkers. It saves you those gratuities, but we still get the specialty dining, internet, and shore excursion credit (if we choose to use it).😊
And this is why we prefer you over the other cruise bloggers...glass always half full with you!
My wife and I are going on our first cruise in April 2025. Ncl getaway out of NOLA. WE'LL be celebrating our 23rd anniversary and my 50th birthday. Hoping we have an unforgettable time. Thank you for all your tips
Congrats! Be sure you tell guest services AND your cabin steward about your special celebrations. You might get an extra perk or two.
I actually followed your advice and bid on an upgrade to balcony. Got accepted and saved 😂a bunch, thanks to you 😊
I love the Waterfront on the newer ships. Especially having outdoor dining on a warm evening...
We love that you pick what time you disembark.
We are platinum latitude members with Norwegian and stock owners. You gave absolutely the best tips for NCL! Cruise likes Norwegian! Pearl is next!
My daughter and I are sailing with spirit in march leaving Sydney Australia and it’s a 15 day trip to all the pacific islands end in Tahiti
We loved the Spirit! Nice outdoor buffet area and seating spots.
Gosh swim forward! What a great tip. After 4 cruises I’m still always lost. This top is gonna be super helpful. Thanks
Thank you for this awesome positive review of NCL. I am sapphire level, mostly Haven, passenger. It’s refreshing after all the negative comments that have been circulating lately. You brought back to mind all of the wonderful reasons why we love NCL. Getting ready to head out next week on Prima for the 2nd time and then Encore the week after⚓
Awesome for you!!! Yes, we've heard the negativity as well so will just make our own opinions about NCL
Just booked my first Norwegian Cruise. can not wait!
Just got off my first NCL cruise in Seattle last Sat. 7 day Alaska …loved it! Signed up for cruise in Sept to Canada….im hooked!
@@LuckyLarryYay good to know I just booked that same one and going in a couple months! First NCL and cruise in general and I'm stoked 👏🏼
Our 1st NCL cruise is Feb 2025. Thanks for all the useful tips!
I’m a 1st time cruiser on Norwegian. Thanks for the insight!
Alisa... what a great informative video.
Points are good for other travel perks, not just NCL OBC
it says your 250 will be disclosed and taxed call it 125. but I took it and hope it comes soon enough to use!
If you are having 15 drinks in 24 hours you are in serious trouble! Lol!!
Great information! I have looked at NCL before but was always confused. Love watching you guys and appreciate the great content.
Awesome! Maybe we'll find each other on board!
You're going to have a blast!
Really great job. We are about to sail and this was very helpful. Thank you.
You are going to have a great time!
I just booked NCL Bliss going to Alaska in October. We have never sailed NCL but from this video and others, I think I made the right decision.
Awesome, we are going in early August looking forward to it.. thanks for the update.
I'm book on the jewel for 12 days. 1st cruising with Norwegian. You had some great tips really enjoyed it.
Just booked my first cruise on NCL Gem for this December transatlantic from Italy with France, Spain, Portugal, SOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!😊😊😊😊
This video is 100% pure value, thanks.
Semper Fi Marine
me too. retired military solo cruiser. my first time on norwegian, i'm on escape. i'm seeing how i like the solo cabin. it is a chunk of money, so i am making sure to enjoy everything i like. like the water rides, maybe the spa, at least one massage, the excursions & fine dining. i opted out of the drink pkg which reduced my fare by $200.00, & i will just buy the drinks i want.i don't drink alcohol or soda, so it won't work for me.
i can't wait.
@@robinpeppinhow was trip?
@@Resdue007 i didn't go yet, the 21oct i leave from manhattan, i can't wait!

Loved your video, informative, interesting, funny, and certainly helps me !!!
Very informative video!! Very interested in cursing with NCL and this video was extremely helpful. Thank you
i booking with you next week for Norwegian Escape in March of 24. Sarah from EECC is great in answering all my questions.
Thanks for this very interesting video with great advice and tips for a first time cruiser like myself who’s looking for a good cruise line.
Thankyou!
The excursion credit is $50 for the first person in the cabin. It used to be for the cabin.
All great tips. Just got off Bliss to the Western Caribbean. Going to the Eastern Caribbean just after Easter, where I will become platinum.
Glad to hear you liked the Prima, have a repositioning booked for April and seen a lot of negative about it.
Same here.
I'm in the process of learning everything Norwegian
I am sailing on the Dawn in March 2024. From Cape Town South Africa
Thankyou! I'm going to check Norwegian out now!
Great tips!
I am planning my first cruise and am leaning towards Norwegian. Your videos are so helpful! Your Hawaii trip has me motivated
I love NCL and the Hawaiian cruise was AMAZING!
That’s awesome William.

We are sailing on the NCL Sun 10/30/23 for 20 nights! Seattle to Port Canaveral will be awesome! Sailed NCL Joy this past April and it's a great ship!
We are on the Jewel from Panama to San Diego beginning March 21. So I think just before yours. We got a pretty good deal I believe, inside cabin with air for 3600 with the free at sea package.
Yep, we are in the following sailing. Have fun!
Great deal!
This is a great video!!!!! I am cruising for the 1st time on Escape in April as a solo. This was very informative. I actually got 50% off my airfare because I was solo which was great..
That’s fantastic!!
You're going to have a great time! I went on Escape in January, love the bartenders at Spice H20!!!
I have looked at no less than 30 videos to figure out the Encore / NCL experience this is the BEST BEST BEST!!!!
Thank you for the information, I'm cruising with NCL Jade in July 2023 this will be my second cruise with NCL. Thank you again.
We tried the bigger NCL ship last year, not our thing. Going BACK to Jewel this coming February, we loved that ship to Alaska. Best crew ever ! We get to go on what looks like our dream itinerary, eight ports in twelve days. Looks to be a one time only !
Yes, we love the smaller ships too
Thanks for the tips! I wish I had used a travel agent, which I thought when I first called Norwegian I could get one. BUT now I see I get someone different every time I call! Will definitely look for a travel agent next time!
I am a TA also! When you are ready to plan your next trip email me at travel@eecctravels.com.
@@EECCTravels Thank you! I will!
Nice video. Great info. Thanks for all the tips.
I am going on the Escape in July. We are platinum and my parents are ambassodors. Always have had an amazing cruise
Ambassadors… dang!!! That’s awesome!
Yes and when we travel with them sometimes we get extra perks. NCL treats them very very well.
Thanks for the tips! Going as first timers this fall to Alaska on NCL.
We are booked for December 1st 2024 and we asked for pricing on airfare for four people two days before our cruise flying out the day after. They gave a price and it was DOUBLE what we found for the same time lines. I'm not sure what they were booking us on but dang!!!
🎉hi are you doing Jewel out of Tampa
a couple things. the $50 excursion credit is not limited to one excursion per port.
Very good tips❣️ Just went through my travel agent to book my Alaska cruise for 2025.
I loved your overview of NCL. We usually sail with royal Caribbean and wanted to try a new cruise line to see the differences for the better. 😀
Thank you for doing it :-) I do have a few comments:
This Is Great information, I have cruised Norwegian before. I really enjoyed your video. Thank You 😊
I'm fixing to work on ncl I'm excited any advice to give before I head out?
So we are sailing on the Prima April 28th!!! And like you, we are no strangers to NCL!! Love it!! I think this is our 14th Norwegian cruise!! I will tell you, though, I went on the app a few days ago and was able to book Donna Summer Musical, and Price is Right. Also booked Hasuki, Food Republic and Los Lobos.
Was not, however able to book any other specialties at this point but I was happy to be able to secure the entertainment and some of the restaurants!!!❤
Hi what did you think of Prima? Also have you been on the Pearl ?
Your advice is awesome especially #13
GREAT TIPS! Thank you- I'm sailing on the Viva and I cant wait to enjoy Norwegian's newest ship
I am amazed at the drinks package prices that you quoted. I sailed on Ovation of the Seas here in Australia for a 14-night cruise, and the premium package was $165/day. The cruise fare includes gratuities here, and maybe the drinks package reflects that in the price.
Love Norwegian. Going to make a travel series in August we love the drink package and other upgrades
About the drink package..If you drink while in port you will also be charged a port tax along with your gratuities
Thank you!! Your information was so perfect for a first time NCL cruiser (in May!)! Keep up the GREAT videos!!! Next cruise we're booking with you guys!!
First time cruiser myself, also taking an NCL cruise in May! Cannot wait… Mediterranean here we come!
You’ll have a blast on the Escape, it’s a great ship!
One thing with flights too is you can't make any modifications once they book it. So no upgrading to a better seat or changing times if you see a better flight. It's a good deal if you don't mind that but if you want some control (like me), it may not be worth it.
Loved your tips. We have booked a cruise to Caribbean March 2024 on NCL Gem. Very excited.
The additional charge on more expensive drinks is not always charged. Depends on the bartender.
The drink package and dining package with the free @ sea I believe is only for the 1st 2 people.
Drink package is for every adult, the dining is for 1 & 2 only.
And the $50 off tours is only for the first named on the registration.
@@susanmotschman4396 I just booked an excursion and the $50 was applied to the 2nd guest on my reservation
The scrambled eggs were runny…
I did enjoy the showtimes and the cruise director, Ralph, was the most fun cruise director ever.
Free at sea “excursions” is extremely deceptive…literally per room only $50 off the person first listed in the room…that’s right…only the first person listed which is very disappointing.
We booked an Alaskan cruise 2024, NCL Jewel. First time to cruise. Thank you for the tips.
How was your experience? Im goung for my bday june 2025.
