This is a wonderful video. Thank you. I just made 6 bonnets of different styles and sizes, and I like this one best. Last year I made a quilt at this time. I think bonnets are more fun.
Thank you for this video. I watched it once and made two bonnets very easily. They will be worn by my daughters on a re-enactment of the Mormon pioneer trail this summer.
This is a very clear and great tutorial! I will sure try it out! One question: what are the measurements for the head piece and brim? It would be really helpful if you could give it, otherwise i don't think i will succeed in making a nice pattern...thx!
Thank you so much for this video! Just completed a child sized bonnet as directed in your video....turned out beautifully (and I am not a very good seamstress at all)! Laura Ingalls costume is looking awesome just in time for halloween and a Little House on the Prairie themed party. Child sized suggestion fits my 6 yr old perfectly!
Inquiring minds want dimensions so here you go. CHILD Main Piece top to bottom is 17 inches (including neck flap), side to side is 16.5 inches. Neck flap is 2.5 by 12 inches. Brim is 18 inches long by 4.5 inches wide in the middle. The ends curve down an extra inch. WOMEN Main Piece top to bottom is 18.5 inches (including neck flap), side to side is 16.5 inches. Neck flap is 4 by 12.5 inches. Brim is 20 inches long by 6.25 inches wide in the middle. The ends curve down an extra inch.
I do not know how to sew dresses or shirts or used a pattern. I can sew pillow cases and hem pants, that's all. Thank you so much for the effort and time. You are such an inspiration and surely I will try. My mom is a seamstress and I have depended on her too long... well she's 85 yrs old now. The way you presented this video appeared simplicity, although I myself may find challenges with "connecting brim and cover (main piece)". However, my daughter and I will attempt to make one for her upcoming trek journey. Again, thank you!!!
What a pretty bonnet! I like the pattern you have used. I saw another one I got out of Mother Earth News that uses a yard and a half of fabric! That seems far too much for one bonnet. I have not made it yet, but the picture of it didn't look excessive. The pattern I have uses 3 layers of muslin fabric in the brim to stiffen it, but I would use interfacing. You did a nice professional looking job! :-)
Can you give measurements on main/brim1/brim2/interface pieces. Can estimate main pc but not sure about others. Great video....can't wait to try this one. Thanks!
I lick my fingers to grip the fabric when ironing or hand sewing too. I wanted to suggest a casing with one long bonnet strap run through, instead of elastic for some room for adjustment. Just a suggestion. Love the video.
Hello, I`m French. Thank you for the video it's really helpful. I try to understand the measurement. What do you mean by "The ends curve down an extra inch" ?
When measuring how wide the brim is it is 1 inch wider on the end then in the middle. The bottom edge of the bim curves down an inch lower then the center part. It's really not very important.
McCall's Pattern 9424 It would be super helpful to include the pattern name and number in the description. I finally found it and now feel ready to make it. McCall's Pattern 9424
We call the heavy weight material interfacing. Here is the definition. a woven or nonwoven material used between the facing and outer fabric of a garment, as in the collar and lapels of a jacket, to add body and give support and shape to the garment.
It just a plastic stick. I think it's from a kite. Knitting needles also work good. You just need something long and stiff. You could also try a dowel but it could give you slivers.
Ok so I want to make sure this is correct I am trying to draft your pattern and I want to make sure I am correct. If I were to draft a pattern to have the main piece on the fold it would be 18.5" all the way down then come across 6.25" then come up 4" . then for the curve you come a bit down to 7.25" and make a mark 8.25" out from there. Then I take a curved/ french ruler and curve from the top of the 18.5" edge to the 8.25 mark then from the 8.25 to the 4" mark?

That was an excellent tutorial! Thank you! I can't find a pattern! I guess I'll have to get out the old white paper :-)

This is a very nice technique. Thank you for making the video for us. Off to make myself a bonnet.

I hope it goes well!
classic line: "where are my good scissors?" ... it must happen to us all!
Interesting suggestion! I just got done making 60 for a local museum gift shop. Next time I do a bunch I'll consider it.
Thank you so much for this - it's a gift. I really needed a solution for a Halloween costume. I appreciate it so much. :D
you're welcome 😊
I really wish I could have seen the finished product on 😞

What was that cool gadget you used to turn the fabric inside out? That was amazing!
I'm so glad it turned out! Happy Sewing!
The main piece is it 8x15?
Double thank you for sharing. sue fr Malaysia

Sounds like fun! Handcarts or wagons?
BusyBee, do you mean 6 1/4th of an inch wide before the brim is completely sewn, or is that measurement for the brim's raw state?
For some reason I can't hear any audio. Is there a place to find this pattern online? Thanks!!!
thank you just what I was looking for!!!
Wow! This is great! Thank You!!!

Where do I get your pattern for the pioneer style bonnet. I see the material list but no pattern for cutting out
Linda Hogue use McCall's Pattern 9424
Ty😊
Where can i get the pattern please.
I think I used Simplicity 9708. Check ebay or etsy for it
That's genius. Thanks you!

I think I understand your plan and it sounds good. Remember the round part gets gathered so its shape is flexible.
TheBusyBeeMom Thanks! you have no idea how much of a life saver you are!!!
Forget that! I'm going to just buy one LOL
Can yoy give me the measurements please.
The brim is about 17.5in by 5in. The crown is about 16in by 16in. Fits girls S, M, and L
I think that was for raw state. I'm on vacation right now so I'm going on memory : )
whats up with the sound?
No sound on this one.
Meee too! No sound...😕
Yard and a half, that does seem a bit excessive! It's definitely cheaper to not go that route : )
