      Being a man in japan is different than being a woman in japan. Either way. The maid Cafe isn't the issue. She's just a typical Western woman. The issues in japan are divorce rates. Child abuse. Low birth rate. Secual assault unreported, Hikikomori. Racism. Racially/Ethnically/Culturally segregated restaurants and bars. Unnecessary strict laws that apply to foreigners for the most dumbest reasons with absolutely no respect to their own original culture as an individual. Let's not even get started on the pedophilia issue. OR the religion issue because you guys just love pretending that doesn't exist. And one of the worst ones is how shitty the Healthcare infrastructure is with mental health. Look at the insane numbers of suicide.
      The problem in japan isn't "am I going to make it to tuesday without getting stabbed?" Like in New York. The problem is. "Why do I tolerate this for good food?"

      So other people not being a total slut makes her feel unsafe...

      In a nation that doesn't even drink at those places.
      But she hails from a nation where people dress like sluts, drink until their livers bleed publicly, has a rape epidemic due to open borders, has sportsbars where the themes are 'women dress like sluts' and 'will give lapdance for $40'.
      She is the NPC epitome of why western women are F'd in the head.

    My experience as an Appalachian living in Japan was that a lot of Japanese dudes' behavior toward women was pretty appalling. I got in trouble outside my apartment because I confronted some dude was manhandling a girl who was either his girlfriend or a girl he was on a date with (never got a straight answer, but they each said something different) and telling him that grabbing women by the arm like he was doing wasn't cool, and a passing cop got involved and basically said "Yea, he was a little in the wrong but it's none of your business" even though the shit was happening right outside my bedroom at 2AM while I was trying to sleep.

    • @BobPapadopoulos
      @BobPapadopoulos ปีที่แล้ว +103

      I'd also say this isn't a very accurate way to get a straight answer, and her response proves it. She keeps hedging her answers with soft edges and even pulls the "I can't really judge because I don't know the culture" card because she's more concerned with the acceptability of her answer, which is most likely either because she knows this is being recorded for a potentially large audience and doesn't want to be seen as xenophobic, or because she's being asked how safe she feels in Japan by a Japanese guy, i.e. the type of person most likely to cause her to be unsafe.

    When I was in Japan, I felt like men would assume you were a prostitute or “available to purchase” if you were dressed cute. Not even necessarily showing skin, but just dressed attractively in a feminine way. There’s like a tipping point where men feel it’s suddenly alright to touch you, because they’re used to only hostesses and prostitutes looking that attractive, since women are required to dress very plainly at school and in the workplace, whether they want to or not. So men can be very inconsiderate, since they associate any good looking woman in nice clothes with women whose job it is to do so, when those women are just dressing the way they normally would in their own culture.

      This has been my experience living in America. I love fashion and men interpret that as an excuse to grope me, try to solicit work i don't do in a scary way, take pictures of me, talk to me, follow me, etc. So I wear frumpy clothes I hate, but obvi it still happens, bc how dare I not be a man and be outside in a place I work and pay taxes in. When experiencing nature is essential to our health. It makes trying to go back to dressing creatively feel "brave" considering the violence I've faced. We don't have the right to public space. This is one of the ways misogyny and men's violence has impacted me the most. The U.K. is trying to ban Public Sexual Harassment.

Saying my age was in no way a deterrent, and on one occasion a teacher who came on the exchange intervened yet they just kept following us until we gave up and got in a taxi.
    Growing up my family traveled a lot, and Japan was unique in how brazenly the perpetrators had no concerns about being seen harassing minors in public.

    Been there. They stare at your boobs a lot, even if you don't show too much. Anything lower than neck they stare at. And yes, maid cafes are a creepy thing japanese focus on. A place where nerds are getting called 'master' and stuff. They are capitalizing on people's fetishes a lot. And there's a lot of repressed fetishes in Japan. And everywhere in ads, stores, media you see women who look like children, sexualised in such a disturbing way. Anime does that a lot. But it really stands out when you are in Japan, to the point where I had to google 'are Japanese men pedofiles?'
    It's the only thing I didn't like in japan, but it's a pretty big thing if you think about it.

And once you realize that it isn't because the men are that misogynistic and that these carts are more frequently used when students make their way to and from school then the absurdity starts to make more sense. Not to discredit you, I'm sure that was pretty traumatizing, but it could still be worse, like the US. Petty crime rates in the UK are comparable to those in the US however. London has like 1/4 the homicide rate of New York. Britain as a whole has roughly 1/5th to 1/9th the homicide rate of the US per capita, depending on the year.
      The worst states in the US like Louisiana and Mississippi have roughly 18 times the homicide rate of the UK, and are more akin to nations like Puerto Rico or Brazil. The US virgin islands meanwhile is one of the most violent places on earth, and experiences roughly 50 times the homicide rate of your typical OECD nation like the UK.
      Anyway, to my understanding, Birmingham is like Britain's version of Chicago; compared to Chicago, it's a hell of a lot safer. Never left Australia myself however.

    I lived in Japan for 2 years and let me tell you, you can clearly tell she is just visiting. When you live there you really see more of this darker side. Like she still wondering if maid cafes are creepy, they are. Is just a little part of the huge industry of women objectification and specifically minors or at least minor looking girls and you see this in every shape and form and media: in magazines, in different ways of business like hostess, maids, girlfriend exp, friend exp, etc. The music industry too, idols, the use of children to sing, or just having young girls dressed as school girls giving advertising on the streets. Is alarming how this is so out in the open, how is so normal to sexualize under age girls and use it to sell. And this is one big bad things, of course there is more.

      The harm is in the exposure you see, they are so many businesses in Japan that consists in putting together an under age girl and a grown man, for supposedly giving a service like, accompany, drink together, etc. But the actual service the business offers is giving you that contact with these girls, the ones that defends these type of businesses say is only harmless conversation, but the harm is in what can happen after that, do I have to spell it for you? The sexualization of under age girls is so normalized and out in the open that people don't even wonder about this, businesses and culture alike are actually helping pedophiles get in contact with under age girls and you can bet a lot of them gets what they want and this is out in the open, normalized and practically legal. Is that enough harm for you?

      How are maids underage? And what kind of business puts grown up men and underage girls together?
      The idol industry indeed was quite creepy in the past and still has creepy aspect but today female fans arent any less common than male fans. Sexualization in Japan is a difficult topic and pedophilia manga are sickening but there is also a genuine kawaii culture that sees young girls as cute and not sexual.

    • @Roxer777
      @Roxer777 ปีที่แล้ว +212

      @@bingobongo1615 Thing is the kawaii culture and the sexualization of under age girls go together, one thing supports the other. When you praise under age features like, tone of voice, cuteness, innocence, clothes (school uniform), as valuable things. Businesses will thrive on this, they will sell that as product. And this elevates it value further more, then other business will copy, adult girls will try and look and act as underage and all of this promotes it even more. A culture that normalized under age sexualization and use it to sell any product, hell, entire businesses use it as fuel.

    As a guy living in Japan I can say Japan is an extremely safe country. However, several of my female friends (Asian and non-Asian) have told me about their experiences where they did not feel safe. One was molested on a train, another iirc was taken advantage of in her sleep, another was stalked and all of them regularly have dudes creeping on them.
    It really is sad that no matter where you go you'll never escape gross predatorial men. It's not just Japanese men doing the creeping by the way. Foreign guys and military guys also think they can get away with anything and often they do.
    So be careful when you travel (anywhere really). Japan IS a safe country. But don't check your common sense at the door.
