  • Dogs that pull, Two dogs pull their sulky 3 miles around Green Lake, Washington. They practice driving commands like gee, haw, over gee, wait, and walk. They encounter pedestrians, bicyclists, leashed dogs, crows but unfortunately, no squirrels.

    My dog pulls me on the scooter and loves it. If I so much as walk in the direction of where I keep the scooter he starts running back and forth from the door to where I keep his leash and harness. My other older dog does not enjoy it as much so I just walk him normally. But they both love being outside and getting exercised. So much better than just leaving them in the yard.

    Awe, I could watch you drive them ALL DAY!! They truly enjoy it and Rosie's ears flopping about as she trots is so stinking cute!! I've always been interested in dog sulky's ever since I trained my mare to drive and pull a cart. I have so much fun with her; that and now I have 4 dogs. They run on the treadmill during the winter, but I would love to drive them during the summer!! Hauling my mare and her cart just takes so much effort, but a dog cart is so much lighter, and I could drive them anywhere. I have a wolf hybrid who's mixed with Husky, beautiful dog, large already at nearly 4 months old, blue and a green eye. I plan to drive him with my husbands pointer/ lab mix. They're both the same size already, despite my husband's dog being 4 years, not 4 months like my boy is. Then I have a Sheltie and Min Pin, who won't be pulling but would come along.

      Jesse, I have not looked at this video for years. It is really good. Shows what dogs can do. You have dogs that are perfect for this sport. If you can train a mare to drive, you already know how to train dogs. Take a look at the "How to Train" page at www.chalosulky.com. Our sulkies are much improved over the ones in this video. Sadly, Brett died of lung cancer while still young. Rosy ran off while boarded and chased livestock and was shot. She did have the cutest ears ever.

      Daphne Lewis I'm so sorry to hear about both of your dogs, that breaks my heart! Are you still using your sulky with new pull companions? I sure hope so. People are cruel. My mom passed away from cancer, then my grandma, & then my grandpa all within 6 months of each other. Some days I wanted to die but then I heard a quote: grief is the price we pay for love. My mare was there for me when so many family members passed away. One day my mare is going to be put down hopefully well into her 30s, she's 9 now, but one day it's going to happen & she makes me tick. I've had her since she was 2. Everything she knows, we learned together. She will lay down so I can mount on cue, stand out in the pen without a halter etc while I trim her hooves, she rides bareback, saddled, rides in a halter, bridle, or just using leg cues & seat to get her to speed up, slow down, stop or spin. I've done liberty work with her & she stays at my side as I run around the property, stops when i stop, & I'm currently working on sending her out to lunge without tack to work circles around me. It scares me to think of that day I'll have to witness her being put down. But grief is the price we pay for love. I hope you have new dogs to share yourself with, you had an amazing team.

  • @DaphneLewis

    You are right about that. When the dogs are pulling happily, driving a sulky is really fun such that your mind is with what is happening instead of all the other things that our minds bother about.

  • @DaphneLewis
    @DaphneLewis  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Go for a leash walk. Use a prong collar. When you see a dog ahead, start to run and excitedly tell your dog "On By". Keep running past the dog. When your dog veers towards the other dog, jerk quickly and keep running. Make passing another dog and continuing a fun game. After passing the dog and a safe distance away, slow to a walk. Treats, praise and more walking.

    Hi Johnny, Actually the reason the dog has his body tilted is that he is pulling harder. He was a fine puller; rosy often slacked off. This make the two dog hitch crooked. The problem was exacerbated by the difference in height. If I were doing it again, i would put one dog on the shaft and one dog pulling with a tugline.

  • @DaphneLewis

    Interesting that you say that. What mushers say it "You can't push a dog with a rope". What they mean is that dogs pull because they love it. If you force a dog they cower and lie down. So it is not cruel. In the opinion of mushers, people who drive dogs with sulkies and people who ride scooters that their dogs pull, it is cruel to leave a dog in a back yard, bored and with nothing to do.

  • @DaphneLewis
    @DaphneLewis  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good point about the booties. I haven't done booties because I often drive the sulky on dirt and because when it is hot, I don't drive. I haven't had to drive on hot pavement.. Summer is coming, though, and gas is getting more expensive...

  • @jimquantic
    @jimquantic 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @DaphneLewis Yes, but a great addition to these find animals is the dog boot, something like what "rough wear" makes. People sometimes don't realize, on a hot day they can burn a pad, or slip a pad--and there really is no reason for it when it is so easy to prevent it. On top of that, the boots look great.

    Hello husky pal. You can hitch one dog to the dorsal shaft and hitch the other one to a tugline that goes between the harness and the vertical part of the shaft. In other words one dog is hitched sulky style and the other is hitched musher style.

  • @noseforadventure4275

    are you kidding? dogs love this! I think dogs would enjoy this more than a regular walk or job because they don't have a slow human dragging them down. Is it cruel to walk/job with your dog? Is it cruel to throw the ball until they quit and lay down? No! If a dog decided it didn't want to pull anymore he'd quit and there is nothing you could do to force them to continue. Like she says below.

    "Gee" and "haw" is what mushers use. It is perfectly fine to say "right" and "left" if you prefer. I suppose the why is because those words are standard for driving and mushing dogs.
