Wow just ordered this HITACHI. Compressor I can hardly wait to try this quiet tool. I'll be using this for my high speed engraving. I engrave on mirror . i think the trades people will love me now! Thank you for turning me on to this one.
I've been using California Air Tools compressors for years. I have a 1 gallon that is about as quiet as the Hitachi. The one drawback is that the motor runs at low speed to keep the noise down, so the SCFM is low on these compressors. I was using my 1 gallon for pin and brad nailing until I bought the equivalent Ryobi AirStrike nailers. But if you need an air compressor, you will *never* want to go back to one of the loud ones after using a quite one.
Awesome Demo! Great Thanks! I have a California Air unit that is comparable yet not as compact or quiet. I have a work project that requires portable compressed air for a machine demo. This Hitachi EC28M looks perfect. Great Thanks!
Very cool. I just picked up a Campbell Hausfeld 1 gallon air compressor I found at a good price. It's noisier, but it's just right for running a brad nailer or small projects.
What is the smallest most quiet compressor I can get away with doing car work? Pulling lugs off, painting rims, sanding ... (although you could use an angle grinder to sand).
Thanks for the review! I use my compressor for an engraving tool. Unlike the dremel which has a rating of 50000 RPM, my engraver spins at 500 000 RPM. I use it in my office at my desk, so less than 60 decibels sounds perfect! No pun intended.
This looks identical to the Eagle EA-2000 sold at Rockler (and possibly elsewhere....). Great little compressor and extremely quiet. I've had the Eagle for a couple months now and I'm extremely happy with it. Ive used it for normal one man trimming with a 16 ga, 18ga, and 23ga guns. It has no problem keeping up with a 16ga driving 2 1/2" nails. But I would suspect that is about the limit. I'm sure it could drive a couple framing nails in a pinch, but absolutely not designed to do that. if you use it for what its designed for, its a great little compressor
Looks to me like a California Air Tools style motor and compressor on there. I've seen a Masterforce brand compressor at Menards that's very similar, so obviously CAT is licensing out their designs, or rebranding some of their models for other manufacturers.
I noticed that too except that the Eagle EA-2000 has slightly better specs, higher CFM's and .75 peak HP. I'm getting ready to buy a small compressor and I'm torn over which one to get.
Just got on for home use for the wife and I . I laughed when I turned it on compared to my work compressor. This little guy is all you need for small jobs around the house . Like you said not good for a blow gun for cleaning
Wow. Love it ! Of course someone comes out with this just when I was starting to go cordless on my nail guns ! Although I still have my 23 gauge pin nailer that's not cordless, so maybe this is the ticket ! Thanks for sharing ! Look Brian you obviously don't need this tool so could you just send it on over to me ?
I just saw when you turned compressor on it's side the filter they use. That is definitely a California Air Tools Compressor Motor with a Hitachi Label.
At one time Hitachi made quality tools but I wouldn’t touch this with a ten foot pole. My LAST Hitachi was the oilless stacked dual tank “portable” heavier than a pallet of these, that began starting sluggish then progressed to not starting at all. It was babied and still looked brand new setting out for trash pickup. *Get the Senco*
Hey Brian, I know I'm a little late to ask a question about this air compressor but, do you think it will power a finish, brad and pin nailer in a home shop? I have researched these quiet air compressors to death. I like this Hitachi/ Metebo model. I just want to make sure I buy the right one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hello sir I’m looking for a super quite air compressor for my apartment. I want a air compressor for my Grex tritium airbrush, cause I build models. Would this work, and be quite enough for that? Also is there a way to hook up a water trap to this compressor ?
thinking the same - did you end up getting this? I've made a list of options and this seems like the best mix of tank size, noise level, price. If you haven't already got it sorted, you can just buy a moisture trap and thread it on to the fitting.
OK, now I'm confused. are you saying you don't think this would be practical on car/RV tires? My RV requires only 61 lbs??? If I bought one, that's why I would carry it in the RV...for the tires. No one would want to wake another camper up at 0-dark thirty using a loud compressor as we are about to head out and find a low tire. @@WorkshopAddict

Thank you so much for such a quick response...I bought a CAT, battery jump starter/12V inverter/air compressor from Costco to carry in the RV. but what I learned was to NOT run it for longer than 10 minutes without a 30 minute rest or risk burning out the pump. I guess I will just return the burned out unit and replace it with the same unit, just use it wisely this time. Again, thanks for your help with this..@@WorkshopAddict
I note the quick connect is fairly large; I would like to connect my Iwata airbrushes to this unit. But they take a much smaller size hose connection. Do you think this compressor would work for airbrushing? Could I somehow connect a "reducer" for my smaller airbrush fittings? Any ideas?
No doubt this is clearly quieter. I wonder if you noticed how you held the phone for all the tests however. For the quiet reading, you held your hand underneath the phone with your fingers blocking the sound waves and strangely your hand is awkwardly pressing up very hard underneath to cover the actual microphone input almost completely muffling the sound input. Now I would never suggest this was intentional, but wonder what the reading would be if you held the phone the same way as the other. Anyway, thanks for the review.
I never noticed that at all. I would assume that if my finger hit the mic it would have shown up as a loud noise on the graph. I will be more careful next time.
Hi! Yep that's very true. I found out the hard way (by not doing enough ultra quiet compressor homework) that the Hitachi EC99S (shown around 2:18), which I quietly own, was not "ultra quiet" but simply loud like most electric compressors. If U need a 4 gallon "almost as quiet" as the small 1 gallon Hitachi EC28M, then check out the California Air Ultra-Quiet 4610a (aluminum tanks) or 4610s (steel tanks). For me, rather than spend a weekend at Home Depot grabbing "sound dampener" materials to construct a big box around my Hitachi 4 gallon, I'm just gonna buy the quiet Hitachi EC28M one gallon (like the one reviewed here) at Walmart for approx 159.00 plus tax and save a foam dampening headache. As an Artist, I'll mainly be using my compressor to airbrush a heavier viscosity Acrilic/Enamel paint over one or two Sci-Fi Creature Suits once or twice a month.
I Got to ask you Sir, I have a diesel pusher RV the tires are 245.75R 22.5's I need a compact quiet compressor to install in one of my luggage bays, would a compressor like the Hitachi demonstrated be big enough to keep the pressure maintained?, The tires require (depending on vehicle Weight) take between 80-90 psi but never exceeding 100 psi, would I need a larger compressor?. After a few months on the road, I've found it frustrating trying to find a Truck Stop, or when I do, trying to manuver a 38' rig around fuel bays because the fuel station air system is screwed up, one thing you don't want are low psi in a bohemian sized RV to blow a tire, not only very dangerous but very expensive. What would be your honest opinion. Sorry for the long question. Thanks again for reading!.✌️
What do you think about piping it to a slave 75 gallon tank to run a farming railer? Or would I be better off buying a bigger compressor. I have the 75 gal tank. I like the how quite it is.Thank you.
hey iam a noob when it comes to compressors, does this work for cleaning computer ? if not can u recommend me couple moudles witch r small and compact ? and what does it need in order to work beside a wall outlet ? Great vid Btw thanks a lot
This would work for blowing out computers at about 50 psi. Short bursts are higher pressure. You would need a wall outlet, shirt hose with quick connections and a spray nozzle. If you wanted a battery operated model, the Milwaukee M18 would work also.
Great review, thank you. I’m looking for one that I can use to blow off my mountain bike after riding in muddy conditions. I think this will work perfect.
About 0.5 cubic feet at about 25-30 psi for most but some are as low as 5-8 psi.Thing is you you have to get a moisture trap since I don't think this unit comes with one. For example, comparing it with a Paasche D500SR which I believe has a smaller tank.
Im really new to these compressor stuff. Will this be good enough to paint my gunpla? And does anyone know what the difference of the amount of liters there are in each compressors?
I have owned California Air Tools Compressor which was super quiet like this one but the compressor only lasted 1 month, I went through 2 and returned both. Is Hitachi using California air tools Motor in this one? Thanks.
I don't think so. CAT's 1 gallon compressors use a single piston and the 1/2 HP 2 gallon appears to be a larger 2 pistons. I suspect that there's a manufacturer in China that is making the motors and pumps for all of the "quiet" models hitting the market lately. I went to Lowe's just to look at the Hitachi in person and it's so unbelievably small!
Looking at this and the Kobalt 2 gal. Need one for occasional trim work with mostly 18but some 15 gauge. Any advice? I have a Kobalt twin stack and it is pretty good.
I was looking into smaller compressors for home so I could blow out dusty Computers that I work on and not have to worry about canned air blowing that liquid at the bottom of the can into the components of my clients machines, this looks like it would fit the bill quite nicely, if it works for pumping up flat tires and other miscellaneous things too? well that's just a bonus.
Perfect for blowing out electronics as you wont need high pressure and it will not last long. You could pump up a flat if you have a LONG time to spare.
I need a very powerful compressor thats has no sound and about 4 to 7 inches long by 2 1/2 inches tall it has to compress hydrogen/oxygen/water seperate im building a exoskeleton power battle armor a prototype for DARPA's contest can you give me some helpful information
WorkshopAddict virtually nothing the little compressors alway turn on when in use, so most likely the one gallon will last long time before turning back on hobby paintiners seem to use between 15 to 35 depending on penbrush and paint viscosity. Hey thanks for the vid review.
Hi! Yes, I agree with your comment! As an Airbrush Hobbyist, I find if I can "dial up" 15 to 35 on the meter dial readout I'm good to go with most of my airbrush projects. The crazy beauty of this tiny beast Hitachi EC28M (reviewed here) is that should allow me to go outside and "crank up" the air flow to 40 or 45 and spray some heavy viscosity stuff like thicker enamels or thinned-out rubber glue (to help seal some foam fabrication creature suits).
I have the machine now....it's my first air compressor. Looking at online videos about air compressors, they use separate air filter regulators to improve the uptake of moisture and air-born dirt, to keep the air traveling through the hose cleaner. a) Do you think these are necessary on this very small machine? and, b) should the air filter be put onto a short line away from the compressor rather than directly attached to the machine? Cheers Celine
Good review, i read a few questions and comments, can you tell us what this thing would be good fore.... what can it handle...not much i guess...( did Sub) thanks
From what I read the Hitachi is only 2 amps which equals 120X2=240 watts motor power. So it should be quiet. For comparison the SENCO has 4 amp motor which is twice the motor power. So I don't know; really. Direct induction motors are rate by AMPs. It takes about 9 Amps by standard to equal 3/4 HP; so all these horsepower claims don't mean much. 9X120= 1080 watts of power.
The phone microphone is in the bottom of the phone. Look at how he hold the phone when he measure the hitachi. Look at how he hold the phone when measure the other brands. Covered his palm
When you're hearing the noise of an air compressor, do you stick your face right into the tool? Putting the phone anywhere within a 10 foot radius would've been fair
Functionally operates just as it should th-cam.com/users/postUgkxiiMg_x4gIWeXMWfBnDdRnME4qJUAva4w holds pressure perfectly when not in use. Glad one of the other reviews pointed out that the bottom pressure release valve was open; thought it was defective at first.

hard to find the quiet one. everywhere it's unavailable
Is this unit enough for airbrushing? Mainly illustration, model kit painting and stuff like that.
It most likely will. Does your air brush list a scfm or cfm on it? If so, see if this unit will provide what it needs.
What is the smallest most quiet compressor I can get away with doing car work? Pulling lugs off, painting rims, sanding ... (although you could use an angle grinder to sand).

I work in a barbershop and the owner doesn’t like noise. Should this be a good buy for an airbrush machine and a clean up hose for hair?
Yes, a blow drier would make much more noise than this. It is small so see if the SCFM will work for your air brush.

is it good for cleaning dust in computers and electronic stuff ?
You MUST buy and fit a moisture trap if you want to put air into your PC, compressors gather water from the air
Wonder how well this would work mounted in a vehicle for airing up tires?
Too small of tank and it would take a long time to get up to pressure on a large tire.

How many SCFM does it need? My guess is that it would be small, but we need to know the specs.
Brian, thank you for reviewing the Hitachi EC28M. This Compressor would be perfect for small trim work. #WorkshopAddict
There are a lot of uses, but trimming is going to be the first that comes to mind for many!
Would this work just to fill car or truck tires👀 I live in a Condominium complex and I have a 2 car garage 👀
I would highly suggest looking at the DeWalt 20 volt inflator first. This would work but would be slow.
Where can I buy it?
Is it still working?
Yes, it runs the safeties on my lift so it is connected and working 24/7. It has been a great unit.
@@WorkshopAddict many thanls
The California Air version has a nice roll bar all around it
I was looking into smaller compressors for home so I could blow out dusty Computers that I work on and not have to worry about canned air blowing that liquid at the bottom of the can into the components of my clients machines, this looks like it would fit the bill quite nicely, if it works for pumping up flat tires and other miscellaneous things too? well that's just a bonus.
Perfect for blowing out electronics as you wont need high pressure and it will not last long. You could pump up a flat if you have a LONG time to spare.
How long would it take to inflate tires
I need a very powerful compressor thats has no sound and about 4 to 7 inches long by 2 1/2 inches tall it has to compress hydrogen/oxygen/water seperate im building a exoskeleton power battle armor a prototype for DARPA's contest can you give me some helpful information
Is this made in China or Japan? I really like it.
Pefect for blowing dust out of electronics and hobby airbrushing, great for under the bench.
how many CFM does airbrushing take?
WorkshopAddict virtually nothing the little compressors alway turn on when in use, so most likely the one gallon will last long time before turning back on hobby paintiners seem to use between 15 to 35 depending on penbrush and paint viscosity. Hey thanks for the vid review.
bunkerfest Thanks for your answer!
Hi! Yes, I agree with your comment! As an Airbrush Hobbyist, I find if I can "dial up" 15 to 35 on the meter dial readout I'm good to go with most of my airbrush projects. The crazy beauty of this tiny beast Hitachi EC28M (reviewed here) is that should allow me to go outside and "crank up" the air flow to 40 or 45 and spray some heavy viscosity stuff like thicker enamels or thinned-out rubber glue (to help seal some foam fabrication creature suits).
how much price 1gallen 100psi
Just purchased one of these for $79.99 and waiting to see what it can do.
I adjusted my volume to decibels advertised and you were louder talking
than the thing
Man that thing is quite. Hitachi has really done a nice job on this one. #WORKSHOPADDICT
I think this may be quieter than a Cali one gallon air comp
it looks very much like a cali air tools clone. it could even be made with the same parts. as cali air tools just assembles the china parts in cali
Thanks for the video. Would this machine handle a staple gun?
Yes it should no issue. Your staple gun should tell you the cfm that it needs also if you are wondering.
I have the machine now....it's my first air compressor. Looking at online videos about air compressors, they use separate air filter regulators to improve the uptake of moisture and air-born dirt, to keep the air traveling through the hose cleaner.
a) Do you think these are necessary on this very small machine? and,
b) should the air filter be put onto a short line away from the compressor rather than directly attached to the machine?
Cheers
Celine
Good review, i read a few questions and comments, can you tell us what this thing would be good fore.... what can it handle...not much i guess...( did Sub) thanks
Many will use it for finish nailing. You are very limited with a 1 gallon tank.
Sold!
I'd think this would be perfect for "pin nailing". Wow is it quiet
Yes, a perfect compressor for pin nailing.
Now Selling as METABO HPT at Lowes - Canada
he is a very similar one that you can still get
From what I read the Hitachi is only 2 amps which equals 120X2=240 watts motor power.
I like alot
Looking at this and the fortress at H.F. Nice review.
Wow, I thought my Husky (CAT) silent flow was quiet! Sadly, I need something larger, don't really have a need for this. #WorkshopAddict
IR makes a nice rotary that is the same noise level and 200 gallons. :)
Link takes you to a Metabo air compressor
Metabo bought out Hitachi, so the link is to the new model.
Waaaoo this compresor is super silence
Functionally operates just as it should th-cam.com/users/postUgkxiiMg_x4gIWeXMWfBnDdRnME4qJUAva4w holds pressure perfectly when not in use. Glad one of the other reviews pointed out that the bottom pressure release valve was open; thought it was defective at first.
That looks an awful like California Air tool MFG to me. Someone is cloning these super quiet and lite compressors like mad.🤔
This would be great for an electronics repair shop to keep under a tech's desk. Less money spent on those shitty cans of air.
Yeah, but look at the price . . . Ridiculous
