I got frustrated last year when I just couldn’t run as quick as previously. But thanks to your videos I learnt to fall in love with the process. I just aimed to be consistent rather than get PB’s. Irony is, I’ve had more PB’s so far this year than ever! 😂

So, after watching this video a couple of days ago, I ran this morning with no tech, no counters, phones or apps. I had a great run! I felt freer than ever and happier with whatever "achievement" I made than I have in months. I did it for the love of it and had a great run - just me, some morning wildlife and an amazing moon. Thank you! :)

Ben, you are at your maximal best with videos like this. You seem to define the quintessisential philosophy of the "gifted runner" with the values you share. Bravo! Oh, plus, Mary is the perfect example of the running life you espouse. Thank you.

I started running about 6 months ago, I’m glad that when I started I had access to all kinds of training information like your channel and others. I follow a plan, I’ve had no injuries, I’ve meet or exceeded all my goals on race days. I have seen my times drop significantly on my easy training just by consistently training and following my plans I’ve set.

Exact same scenario, started in December due to a random comment about running a marathon from a friend. No injury (yet!), and now running half marathon distance once or twice a month, and building up.

I've lost count of how many running videos I've watched around improving my pace, setting PB's etc. But this is the first video that has actually inspired me and made perfect sense. I'm off for an enjoyable run, not necessarily a fast one. Glad I found this video and can't wait to view some of your others!

I love how Mary is just loving her run. I can't wait to get even half this happy. Currently 5 weeks into half marathon plan and not feeling like I will get the time I want, so I'm going with 'I just need to finish it' which is going to be challenge 🙃

This couldn’t have come at a better time! I’m starting a new training cycle tomorrow with a focus on aerobic base building and needed this reminder. I tend to think faster is better, slower is weaker, and if I’m not beating the time of my last training run I’m failing. Even though I know that’s not true I get stuck in the “trap”. This was incredible Ben and Mary. I know I suffer extreme anxiety with some of my runs because of the pressure I put on myself and I am certainly not an athlete. Just a perfectionist. And the main reason I love to run is because it helps ease my anxiety, so sometimes I can get in a rut of it all being backwards. Now I know I can come to this video, listen to your words and the sound of that gorgeous ocean and have a hard truth with myself to just do it. Run for the reason you began in the first place! Thank you so, so much for these types of videos guys, you also did one about getting out there and running, not hitting the snooze button etc and that really spoke to me too - they’re awesome. Have a wonderful day both of you ❤️🌻

Brilliant advice - and a trap that we are all guilty of falling in to. Started back running again this year after nearly 18 months out with injury and was fast approaching another injury (had 2 bad runs in a row due to illness and thought I had to compensate - added more runs and they were poor, so added more distance). Finally got myself a running coach/physio who has given me a plan to follow where emphasis is on less-is-more and recovery/strenght/flexibility is key.
Happy running folks and thanks again for the advice!

@@ThisMessyHappy July marks one year for me running consistently, and I've done races (both paid and virtual) for the 5k, 10k and Half marathon distances. HM distance twice, on a long run at 2:16:00+ and my first HM distance was a race with a time of 1:59:57. First 10k race was a 57:56 time in January 2022, then I did a virtual 10k race for myself in April 2022 and improved to 55:14. Lastly, my first race in 10 years was a 5k in October 2021 with a time of 27:31. I am finishing a second recovery week today after a good three week training block with a 5k scheduled. Decided to spice it up and try for a new PB, prepped a few days out, and ran the same route I did in October 2021, to make the challenge comparable. It was a wonderful success!! New PB today @ 24:45, 2:46 reduction!!
I've been using your training plans, modifications where made for my schedule, my weight lifting and treadmill walking work, but the principle distances, gradual increases, and recovery times have all been used. You and Mary have been a wonderful resource to follow and glean valuable and practical information on running, the body, planning and prep, gear ... you name it. I would not have done what I have without your influence and encouragement! My next steps are training and running in my 2nd HM race in December 2022, but I will be getting my body prepared for it by doing a Marathon training plan. I've never attempted a Marathon, much less the training to prepare for one. But know that This Messy Happy will be right there with me as I travel down the road toward these goals.
Not everyday is a PB. Today presented an opportunity ... I took it and executed. Felt great, but that isn't the process. That's not the purpose. To enjoy this wonderful and challenging sport, to push myself physically and mentally through pain and strategy, and in the end realize it isn't about medals, PB, or other people giving you a pat on the back ... it's understanding you're valuable. Your health, physically and mentally, is important. But I need to understand I'm valuable to start with, and that gets me up, gets my shoes on and out the door to run. Thanks again for all your continued help!! Talk again soon!

I appreciate this video and your others, Messy. As a runner for one year, I’m in two running clubs, read Fitzgerald’s 80/20 Method, and met dozens of helpful runners. I never once met a runner that tries to “run faster every session”, as many TH-camrs use as an example of the polar opposite of easy running. The other inconsistency I’ve discovered is that very few experienced runners truly run at a conversational pace. Even in our weekly group “easy runs”, even the very best runners in our club are *not* running at a truly conversational pace for themselves. It’s these inconsistencies that make running puzzling. 🤔

Many thanks for the video. I am a long time gym goer (jump rope and strength training) who recently got into running. Sure, I have been chasing pbs but your video reiterates something which I have learnt in my gym life, that the enjoyment of the process is far more important than the results. I went for a run the other night and realised that I wasn't going to be setting any fast times, I got a little lost in the dark streets / parkland but realised I was just happy to use my run to explore my surroundings. Much like your video.

Solid advice, it doesn't only apply to running. Strength training got me into running, because I had to regain the ability to walk, jog and eventually run again after I ripped two tendons in the lower back by trying to break my pb on the deadlift. Took 3 years until I felt like my back was stable again and 5-7 years until all pain and flexibility problems were over.
Now I just run and lift based on what feels good, and every two weeks I allow myself to check if my peek strength and conditioning is on track by trying to improve my pb's by a little or at least match them.

Sage advice here. In moments of disappointment with myself I always remember how far I’ve progressed; from not being able to run round my local park to now running a half marathon without feeling too broken afterwards. Big picture perspective has also helped me to enjoy races and not be too obsessed with PBs. Sure I have goals like everyone but I now view them as granular, the big goal is to keep running for as long as I can.

I started running about a year and do 5k to 6k everyday at a 11.5 km to 12.5 km of pace. Now I struggle to go running because it’s almost a drag to do it. No fun and always do the same rotine. I did lose 20 kg in the process. I will try to run slower and do 80% of aerobic and the other 20 in anaerobic. On think is for sure and that is that I cannot run without music. Great video and thanks for sharing trully inside toughts. All the best!

That‘s what i had to remember myself after peak fitness (3hr Marathon) followed by covid (Not able to jog 2k). Rough times.

Thank you for this and other videos. I did really well during the pandemic to stay consistent, but after taking a break after my last marathon in October 2021, I have struggled to find any consistency. I know part of it is that my running partner moved and I have had a lot of other life things, but need to remember easy consistency is important. I am moving to a warm place next month and know that my body has to adapt as I have seen you and Mary work through adapting to Thailand.

Agreed! Love it where you were running too. It's so cool how you had all this obstacles on your run, and I like it how you were climbing over and running just when the tide was out. Can you swim in that see too? Where was it?

There’s a happy medium to be found in Strava segments. Go out and go gentle for the duration but allow yourself to blitz a single segment only and get a wee PB on that segment rather than the whole distance 👍🏻😇

been running for around 6 months now..only in last couple of months have a started a running program which includes long runs, interval runs etc etc...problem im finding is that i keep getting all these little injuries that put me out for a while..runners knee, shin splints, sore feet, hammy issues...its very frustrating when you feel you are making progress than have to take a few days to a week to recover, to come back and find your progress has has taken one step back 🤦🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Does your running programme include strength and conditioning? If not then you may benefit from finding one of those to add in? S&c is absolutely crucial to keeping you running. I hope that helps 😊 don’t give up 💪🏻

I am preparing for FM in Dec. Preparing since last Dec. Have been hitting PBs every week Dec to May. Now it's plateaued out. At current pace, expected FM time is 7hrs. I was preparing for 5.5hrs. Thanks for the video. Maybe I should not focus on time and rather focus on completing my first FM. Its ok to do it in 7-8hrs. Maybe 5.5hrs will have to wait for few yrs of training to possibly come.

Definitely, Rahul. It it’s your first FM time should be the last thing you think about. Think about getting out there, smiling that you’re doing what 99% of the world have never done, and planning your next 😉

I wish I could take on board what you are saying as I'm 47, have been consistently running for about a year (excluding injuries). My coros app says to wait 70 hours before any hard training but I know I'll be back out running before then and then be moaning my knee or calf hurts. I love running and any missed training runs before my 1st marathon stress me out.

Sometimes it takes time but keep trying and committing to the process. Sometimes it takes one particular setback or injury for you to change. It’s not nice but it is necessary. You can change though, you just have to want to 😉😊

I'm in my 8th week back after not being able to run 4 months+. I'm seeing some progress, but it will take continued consistency to get my normal jog pace back. I'm seeing a very wavey curve but the trend is going down by a second or two a week, so I could be back where I was towards the end of the year. I guess it comes down to why you stopped running and what you did while you couldn't run that guides how much fitness is loss.

I have to admit I have not got a watch. Therefore, I never measure distance or time during training. I only find out my times when I race. I've got over a year's of pbs .

I always use tech when I run because otherwise, I would run too fast. I need it to run at a constant pace.
