      My problem is that I substitute fingers for a lot of stuff.
      Like for a D chord, I'll just bar the E B and G and then use my ring finger for the third fret of the B. Of course it makes Free Falling a lot easier for me to play. But then in other songs I'll use my pinky more than my ring finger in place of my ring finger. Then there are songs where I'll use my middle finger in place of my ring finger or even my index. Like if I play Black Magic Woman, I'll use my middle finger on the E string and swap to my index when I hit the 5th fret of the B string (I don't like using the open E on that song since it makes it super weird and bad to play).
      See, I consider myself an intermediate guitarist, but according to this, I'm better than that. Sure, I watch a lot of Netflix and I ride my bike a ton, but practicing isn't below me. I'm constantly practicing whenever I'm not eating, sleeping, shopping, watching, or cycling, as long as my fingers aren't bleeding from how much I play. I'm self taught, I don't make excuses, and if I get frustrated I come back to it later with a fresh ear. I've been playing for the last 6 years, and while I'd love to make playing guitar into a career, that's just unrealistic for me with all of the requirements that they burden you with in songwriting. Playing guitar is a hobby of mine. I have the same acoustic guitar that I did when I started 6 years ago, besides the electric that my mother gifted me a few years ago that ended up stolen and was never recovered.
      I consider myself an intermediate guitarist, but this video says entirely otherwise.

      I shattered the knuckle on the pinky of my left hand a couple years ago, so while it was healing I learned a bunch of chords and stuff that required the pinky as physical therapy.
      I've never stopped using it for my playing since. It's just so natural now.
      Edit: forgot my rights and lefts somehow

    I’ve been playing for five years now and I’m pretty confident in my playing I know a bit of legato and a lot modes and I’m getting used to playing in different time signatures but I’m very reluctant to call myself “intermediate” like I think I’m pretty good for 5 years but I’ve heard people who are way better than me call themselves that, I think if you consider yourself “really good” too early you lose drive and never really keep succeeding because you think you’re already “good enough” but you should never think that because you can become waaaaaay better than you think, tapping arpeggios seemed so foreign to me 2 years ago know It’s basic to me now, if you got a real passion for guitar don’t stop, you’ll become better than you could ever imagine 😃

      And my 6 string guitar tuned to... idk, D standard or drop C maybe?
      But that's just because I love practicing with a sound as close as the real song's, which... Shouldn't bother me as much as it does I guess lmao

  • @swagmiredoesall
    @swagmiredoesall 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I honestly agree with the theory limiting creativity thing. Whenever I write songs I have ideas of what sound I want and the feel I want, and I do it based on sound alone. Not necessarily chord theory, but scales. If you learn scales you just get stuck in the scales you know, and you don't use them properly. The best thing from my experience is to learn chords, and play around them based on the chord progression. This makes a more compelling solo without getting stuck in a hole, and spending a lot of time trying to figure out what scale you want to play, and you just play what you feel.

    This is going to sound really douchey but I love playing guitar so much when I pick up one of my guitars to play it, which is every single day for hours, I start to play and always think "I even love the way the strings feel under my fingers". I made a career out of setting up and repairing guitars so I spend a lot of time with a guitar in my hands and have not lost any interest in playing at all.
