while theres no doubt this video is well directed and takes from the french film girlhood, i cannot believe no one has commented on the entirely inappropriate Lolita themes running through it. If it's so much about girl power why half way through the video is she laid in a micro skirt in a girls bedroom that is full of toys a child of three would have?? its fucking shocking. Sexualisation of young women is real. This stinks of a mans perspective of girlhood.
I think this video is recognizing her transition from adolescence to adulthood. She is very young still and probably has one foot still in adolescence and the other in this big new world where she is making major adult decisions about her life, her music, her family, her friends, love and much more. I don’t view it as a “Lolita” theme because if you have read “Lolita” you know just how vast the age difference in the actual book really was. She is close to the age of these girls in the video if not the same age. These girls are dressed a certain way not to exploit themselves or to please the audience but to be free...expressing that they can dress in a way that pleases them alone. Just because they dress a certain way doesn’t make it an invitation for perverts and pedophiles to view them as prey. Sometimes girls/women like to feel sexy for themselves or even for a lover and because we live in a free society they should have the freedom to express themselves through fashion, music, art or whatever they are passionate about without it being an invitation. You can dress sexy and be sexy for yourself, friends, and lovers just or just throw on sweats and a T and have a chill day and be just as sexy but in a different way. She is a young woman showing us a glimpse of herself and for that she should be applauded. As humans we are all go through transitions throughout our lives that no matter what age change the course of our lives. I believe that transition from teen to adult is probably one of the hardest. Just playing devils advocate and expressing a different perspective I took out of the video. From this video I have found a new artist that I am looking forward to watching as she continues to grow as an artist. I think she will have longevity as an artist she is very talented.
