Agreed. He was a fighter who worked his ass off and wanted his shot. He pressed his beef openly, got his shot, and became champ. Everything he did was to make sure he got his shot and win. He waged physical and psychological warfare on Rocky who indeed was tailor made for Clubber. Rocky "villains," when stripped to their core, are fighters, who like Rocky, wanted their shot. If you listen closely, you can hear Clubber lay out some depth to his character while Rocky is telling Mick he wants to fight him. Clubber is saying don't judge me by anything but by how hard I work, by my pride, my determination and my fighting record. He is a fighter....but "No he aint just another fighter. This guy, is a WRECKING MACHINE! And he's hungry. Hell you aint been hungry, since you won that belt."
He was supposed to be in Rocky Balboa as a commentator that had softened with age...basically giving Rocky praise as being the only man that had beaten HIM. But evidently money got in the way and the Sly was able to score that HBO setup by coordinating the Dixon fight with an actual PPV (of Bernard Hopkins vs Jermain Taylor)

The birth of the sympathetic super villain. Lang ain't a nice guy, but he's 100% right as well. He DID deserve the shot, and did what he had to and got it. You don't necessarily like him, but you can't hate him. Brilliantly done. R3 doesn't get the credit it deserves.
Plus, Clubber was hungry for the title (heavyweight champ), more than Rocky ever was. In the first two films, Rocky was handpicked or challenged to a rematch, but never actively sought a match with Creed. 😔
@Evan Koch true....the 2 fights Rocky had with Clubber Lang were the shortest ones they showed (2 or 3 rounds each). Not sure about the 10 title defense fights, but those guys were nowhere near as dangerous as Clubber Lang. I think that even the street fight in 'Rocky 5' was longer....😶

I thought the dialogue in this whole movie was great from The scenes with Mr. T and Hulk Hogan (Thunderlips) all the way to when he goes and trains with Apollo..Classic movie and my personal favorite of all of them
Mr T did such a good job in this movie, that at the movie premiere. Mr. T”s own mother walked out the theater being ashamed how he acted in a movie. That’s a phenomenal job to make your own mom angry at you over a role you acted in!
Stallone gave Mr. T a chance and he exceeded his expectations. Stallone brought back all the greats in the Expendables. He is definitely a fair and honest guy. Salute to him
Yep. It was very easy for Stallone to sink into vanity projects with the Rocky movies. He didn’t do that. He got charismatic guys who stole scenes in his films and let them shine.
People usually mention Creed and Drago when it came to Rocky’s Rivals. But, I feel like Lang is not mentioned enough. He was entertaining, he knocked out Rocky and was living in his head rent free before Rocky got it together.

Yeah he was the best. Drago was epic to watch in the fight at the end because it had so much political context, but the worst, meanest villain was Clubber. When he's doing pull-ups on the beams of the basement in his crappy apartment, its chilling. Its like a caged dog ready to strike.
So Mr. T adlibbed that part where he was hitting on Adrian. & Sly Stallonne sold the moment by reacting like a husband protecting what he cherishes most in life. 👏👍...now that's top notch acting!
To me Clubber Lang was not an antagonist. He might have tried to have gone about it in a "nice" way to get a shot at Rocky, but he made several great points. he was a badass, he was hungry to be champion and trained like crazy to get where he was. Plus this scene here was just a mind game, Clubber did this to get in rocky's head so that he would want to fight him and it worked. Plus rocky did not take him seriously the first fight which is why he lost.
There were at points where he was provocative (as shown by hitting on Rocky's girl) but he knew exactly what he was doing in order to get Rocky to accept. And it worked. I don't exactly believe he was a protagonist, but he was much more motivated than Apollo to defeat him.

From what i heard back in the old day and even now the Oscars and Golden snubbed alot of movie, director, and actors because they like to keep a air of respectability to them. So they were very snoody to action movie and genre (Scifi, fantasy, western, horror) movie. Movie like Alien and Jaws are example of these snub.

Read the original script for Rocky Balboa (originally titled Puncher's Chance), and it had Clubber Lang as a ringside commentator. Already he had a wonderful line that described Rocky "Fool, how you ever gonna intimidate Rocky after being in the ring with a monster like me." Would have loved to see that on screen.
And Mr. T would've pulled it off with panache. Would've been interesting to see the original story...Rocky running a rec center, fighting Mason Dixon (as played by Roy Jones Jr) and Clubber being there to call the fight. Obviously wouldn't be the same story, but I'd have watched it just the same.
I always thought it would have been interesting to have CLubber comeback being rich from selling CLubber Lang Grills and being mister nice guy like George FOreman
Mr. T showed some of the best acting and improvisation ever in this film. I am sure most of his lines were ad-libbed. There is no way the writers came up with those lines. They might've gave him some ideas or other lines in the script but Mr. T had to have input to customize every word so it would sound natural for him.
When I watched this as a kid, I of course knew movies were fake, but I honestly thought Clubber Lang was a real person in a movie because he acted so well. Like how could anybody possibly "act" like that?
The way Mickey shuts down Rocky’s response to fight him “you want a fight you got it”, saying “you don’t get no shot, & I mean that!” Mickey knew he was right talking about setups that Rocky was fighting.

Honestly everything Clubber said was true. Mick was keeping Rocky away from Clubber and Clubber was being honorable. He wanted it from the champ not a hand me down. Mick should be ashamed of himself for protecting his fighter from a true champion.
If I remember correctly, didn't Mick admit later on that he didn't think Rocky could beat Clubber? Wasn't that why he kept blocking him from fighting him in the first place?
SnowyWolborg if Mick had been giving Rocky actually good fighters and had been pushing Rocky to more training, Clubber would either have lost or have barely won. All Rocky really had to do was endure Clubber's beating for the first few rounds. Clubber had no stamina, while Rocky had inhuman stamina. Hell, the reason why Clubber challenged Rocky was because Mick was making Rocky look like a clown and poser by not giving him real contenders.

Rocky was about two fights away from being past his best already. He got to the top and he started enjoying his money. Everyone does it man. Mick just saw a hungry clubber Lang and he knew Rocky was on his way on the decline. So he protected him.

This scene is actually quite realistic. You have the number 1 contender feeling like he is getting ducked and sidestepped by a very popular Champion. So how do you generate interest in the fight and put pressure on the champ? Challenge him and call him out at a public event honoring the champ.

Clubber Lang was truly one of the greatest movie villains of all time! Mr. T did such a great job with this character in Rocky III

To me Clubber Lang was not an antagonist. He might have tried to have gone about it in a "nice" way to get a shot at Rocky, but he made several great points. To me, Clubber's humanity comes out when he is speaking to the crowd, while Mickey speaks to Rocky. Here is what Clubber says (from 1:17):

Clubber Lang was a f'ing badass. Knew what he wanted and did whatever he had to to get it. Always saw him as more the protagonist in this movie.
he was a badass, he was hungry to be champion and trained like crazy to get where he was. Plus this scene here was just a mind game, Clubber did this to get in rocky's head so that he would want to fight him and it worked. Plus rocky did not take him seriously the first fight which is why he lost.

Read the original script for Rocky Balboa (originally titled Puncher's Chance), and it had Clubber Lang as a ringside commentator. Already he had a wonderful line that described Rocky "Fool, how you ever gonna intimidate Rocky after being in the ring with a monster like me." Would have loved to see that on screen.
And Mr. T would've pulled it off with panache. Would've been interesting to see the original story...Rocky running a rec center, fighting Mason Dixon (as played by Roy Jones Jr) and Clubber being there to call the fight. Obviously wouldn't be the same story, but I'd have watched it just the same.

Mr. T showed some of the best acting and improvisation ever in this film. I am sure most of his lines were ad-libbed. There is no way the writers came up with those lines. They might've gave him some ideas or other lines in the script but Mr. T had to have input to customize every word so it would sound natural for him.

Honestly everything Clubber said was true. Mick was keeping Rocky away from Clubber and Clubber was being honorable. He wanted it from the champ not a hand me down. Mick should be ashamed of himself for protecting his fighter from a true champion.

T was such a good villain that its lost that he had a damn good point. Rocky was ducking him, he was fighting the better competition, and he missing out on the big money because he wasn't getting the shot he had earned
I don't think Rocky knew he was ducking Lang but he was a little naïve. He fought whoever Mickey put in front of him and didn't question it, so he wasn't fighting the best. Mickey didn't want Rocky to get the crap beat out of him like what Creed did to him. I can see his point but he still should have been straight with Rocky from the beginning.
