      I've never been bothered by ads to be honest. I only run ABP primarily for script blocks on first-time visits in case of shady websites. I disable it on any trusted sites.

    • @Scubadog_
      @Scubadog_ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +153

      Techquickie I don't get why. Denying the content behind a timer makes me hate their company. The well done proper promotions at the end of the video actually intrigue me.
      For example, I don't really have a use for Freshbooks right now, but I bookmarked anyway, since it seems useful. You can bet I wouldn't have even thought about doing so with an annoying pre-roll.

    • @prototypep4
      @prototypep4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Techquickie imbedded ads at the end are certainly not an issue. The reason I run adblock is mostly because the ads aren't relevant. So many times I got car insurance ads when I wasn't running adblock that I just got fed up. I'm blind, I don't need car insurance. Or a lot of things that are advertised. I watch the adverts you put in and have considered a few courses on Lynda because of you guys.

      Many of the people arguing against blockers today forget how ad blockers came to be in the first place. If ads were harmless or even moderately annoying, no one would have been motivated enough to create such a rigorous infrastructure like with AdBlock Plus or uBlock Origin. By the early 2000s we were being assulted by pop-ups, pop-unders, Flash ads with sound, Java ads with sound, and more, often with multiples of the aforementioned on the same page.
      Beyond creating the tools, common users wouldn't have been motivated enough to install blockers were the utility value not so high.

      For every one of those, you thought of something. Because you thought of something, the ad succeeded. It is not to make you buy something immediately but to make you think of those products when you decide you want something.
      I am thirsty. What do you want? Maybe a coke.
      I want to grab a quick bite. I heard checkers is having a deal.
      I need a new car. Those Mercedes sadans look great!

      I think I have to agree with "PeskyCanadian", due to the way I remember things by linking memory:
      See a drink ad? Cola -> relaxed -> want action -> drinks soda in GTA -> play GTA
      car ad? Car -> Driving -> action -> Travel -> RPG or racing game
      cat food ad? Cat -> Khajiit -> Skyrim
      loan money ad? Economy -> spreadsheet -> EVE Online or the X space games (X Rebirth/X3 Reunion)
      game ad? Any game will do
      Because of entertainment level: Learning < Gaming.
      Only thing that outweight Gaming is Learning & Entertainment, only time I break over to gaming then are annoying ads that distract me from having a fun learning experience online.
      In short, any ad I see usually stops me from watching LinusTechTips and start gaming instead, and with that miss that next video I could have given a like.

  • @raine6813
    @raine6813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    why i use adblock:
    1. ads are usually disruptive and intrusive to the point where it lowers the quality of the website
    2. ads usually contain scams and viruses
    3. i also dont support the practice of profiting off of showing people malicious ads
    4. some ads are inappropriate to show to younger people
    5. advertisers make about 10 cents per person who see their ad so one person disabling their adblocker really wont make a difference anyway
    6. i paid for my internet and ill do what i want with it
    once the internet stops having ads like the ones i described in reasons 1-4 i wont have a need for adblock anymore, but until then i will have NO shame using adblock wherever i go. its the advertisers own fault im doing this

      I mean you seem like a reasonable person and I admit, I tend to get pretty salty whenever adblock is mentioned, but to put my thoughts more concise:

    99.99% of the ads that are shown,I wouldn't buy the product anyway,so I see no problems blocking ads. I come to watch videos like Linus's to learn about a product which I am considering buying,that's all the ad I need to see. I am not going to sign up for some crap like freshbooks because I have absolutely no need for that and is a waste of my time to watch such an ad.So therefore I block the ads.

    • @markbrown3587
      @markbrown3587 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Robert Floyd I have to agree that a good number of Linus' videos are about a product or number of them that I would consider buying so the whole video is almost an ad in itself. Related to how I get annoyed when I watch a movie trailer just to get an ad for another movie before it.

    • @mrsmith1097
      @mrsmith1097 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Robert Floyd Advertising does work, and it works really well. That's why successful companies spend billions on it -- they know what they're doing. It's not just as simple as buying a product when you see an ad, it's putting a brand or a product into your memory by showing it to you over and over. You may never buy the product, or you may buy it months or years from now. Have you ever bought a Coke? How do you know advertising hasn't contributed to some of those decisions?

    • @Blueknight1960
      @Blueknight1960 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tmnsoon Yes I know advertising works. It has worked on me. But it is very hard to do anything now-a-days where there isn't some sort of advertising and I for one am tired of seeing it. So I block a few ads on you tube, they'll get over it.

    • @cptwhitebeard1880
      @cptwhitebeard1880 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Floyd let me put it this way, when you go to website or watch a youtube video with adblock the creator doesnt get any money from you visiting, now imagine everybody using adblock so now nobody is making any money off their hard work. Then they will stop showing it for free so you have to pay to see it, and then the free internett we enjoy today dies out. Now remeber this the next time you deside to turn on adblock

    • @markbrown3587
      @markbrown3587 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      AdBlock understands this and that is why they have a set of acceptable guidelines such as no auto play videos or ads that cover content (option enabled by default). For those that do not abuse ads and if the AdBlock user does not disable this option then acceptable ad content is not blocked. One can find the specifics at adblockplus.org/acceptable-ads

  • @HaydenX
    @HaydenX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +61

    I so much prefer the in-video advertising done by the creators. My problem with ads has nothing to do with the ads themselves...but rather the crappy computer I spend a lot of my time on. I have had numerous browser crashes on the PC I'm typing this from when I allowed ads. I also got malware from ads that ran on a sports website and a webcomic website...because the advertising platforms are not immune to being compromised. I love it when the channels I enjoy showcase the merch or talk about how I can save money on my mobile data plan...or my website expenses...or other things. That means that I am still supporting the people I like without having to put my computer either at risk, or into nasty performance mode. I don't have much money...and so don't tend to buy stuff...but hey, I don't buy stuff from the external ads either.

    Sponsorships. If companies want to advertise, they use sponsorships. Because I am sick and tired of:
    >Loud unskipable prerolls, especially when irrelevant to the video I am trying to watch
    >Multiple ad popups
    >Struggling to run HD video but the ad loaded perfectly in HD quickly
    >Noisy or flashy ads, especially when you can't mute or stop the video
    >Ads which intrude on the space of the website
    >Ads which take so long to load the page times out
    >Pop ups (unfortunately they haven't got rid of the "Join our mail list" or "Like us on Facebook" shit yet)
    >Malicious ads that actually put software you don't wnat on your computer
    >Trying to download and seeing 10 different download links, and the real link being the least obvious
    >Ads, typically the type mentioned above, that fool less conscious people into clicking on them and installing the software
    >etc etc
    When ad makers improve their game, I may consider not using adblock. I don't give a shit aobut website maintenance and server costs, get your shitty, obnoxious, deceptive, malicious ads out of our face. We use the internet for the content, with ads on the side. Our experience shouldn't be hindered with *BUY THIS!!!!! CLICK THIS LINK!!!!!* That should not be what we use the internet for or the main experience. Advertisers need to make us want their product, not simply have the loudest, most annoying ad. And the fact that ads allow malicious people with malicious intent? No, I use adblock, no regrets.

    I use "adblock" on TH-cam., and it's NOT because I don't want ads. I'm 61 years old, I'm used to ads on free content (TV, Radio). So i have NO PROBLEM with ads, my problem is the RANDOMNESS of the placement. Usually, TH-cam will toss an ad IN THE MIDDLE of the sentence of what the "TH-camr" is saying, BREAKING THE "FLOW". Ads on "ordinary" TV or Radio have HUMANS who break content at NATURAL breaks. This is why I don't mind ads that are IN THE CONTENT...
